"What the hell, V? Why did you do it? I told you not to fucking intervene!"
"I didn’t do it." Ava shrugged. "But I can’t really control Matthew, can I?" She sat on the couch when her legs were just about to give out. Matthew asked her not to go back but she just had to.
The topic of his jealousy came up. Matthew insisted that he wasn’t jealous. He was just... angry. He didn’t like Werelions. Then he said he didn’t like Jude. Then he talked about Trillium.
The man didn’t want to tell her why he actually beat his people to the brink of death.
The man was just too stubborn. In the end, Ava could only shake her head in silence.
Though this time, she came back wearing a turtle neck and a battered body.
Maybe Matthew already knew that she was coming back.
And that’s the reason why she was now full of kissing marks, her body felt like it was about to crumble anytime soon. For the first time, Ava felt like someone sucked her magick out of her body. She could still use it but she was just too exhausted to do it.
"You told him?" Jude asked. "You know what? Forget I asked that question. I should have known that you will tell him everything." He leaned back and let out a loud sigh. "What was even I expecting?"
"Right," Ava smiled. "I may not be a good person but I don’t hurt innocent people Jude."
"And you think you are better than me because of that."
Ava rolled her eyes at the man’s dramatic outbursts.
Of course, she would do something to stop the experiments! She wanted to use this opportunity for something else.
"You know what? Come with me..."
"Where?" Ava asked. She could barely walk in her high heels. Sadly for her, Ivy Sawyer always wore stilettos in the office. Ivy wasn’t very tall in the first place. She loved wearing heels to make herself taller.
Ava sighed inwardly.
If only she had a proper grasp of her magick. Then she would have used it to replenish her energy. But her control wasn’t really as good as Baba’s or Shaman Gaas.
She couldn’t help but wonder why until now, she still couldn’t perform the simple magick that Baba had instructed her to do.
To be honest, she was now starting to doubt if she was really a witch. Baba told her that all witches start by learning that basic technique. It was taught in all schools of witchcraft.
So why would a witch like Ava who could teleport to other continents couldn’t do a simple magick?
Even Baba didn’t know.
The woman would just purse her lips and stare at her every time she failed.
Honestly, it was slowly starting to irritate her.
"I need to supervise a binding."
"Excuse me?" fɾēewebnσveℓ.com
"A witch used her abilities to kill her abusive husband. Her coven decided to excommunicate her and bind her magick. She wouldn’t be able to use it again."
"What ability?"
"She compelled someone to kill her husband."
Ava blinked.
"Why bind her magick?" Binding a magick is just like a lethal injection for witches. Except it was worse. True, they would live but the pain that they would experience every night would be excruciating. During the day, they could function like a normal powerless human but during the night, they would feel like their bodies had been pricked by thousands of needles.
There was no blood, no cuts or wounds.
It was just pure agony.
"Why would you do that?"
"She performed magick in front of a human."
"If she compelled the human then the human would forget about it and— "
"Someone connected her to the crime. The human was convicted but the human’s child and another friend saw her ask the man to kill her husband. Now, people are asking questions. The DA won’t leave them alone. It is a mess."
Ava’s eyes widened.
Before Ava could say another word, Jude got up and gave her a file.
She immediately opened it as she followed him out of his office. This time, they were going to take a jet and would fly to New Jersey.
"I still think this is wrong," Ava said.
"What is?"
"Letting her suffer. Why not just kill them?"
Jude shrugged.
Of course, Ava already knew the answer to her question. First and foremost, the case was considered a public one. Meaning, that other covens and shifters were watching the case. What would they think if Trillium would just kill the witch without letting the witch suffer?
Still, Ava thought that was all bullshit.
"Look at this... the woman reported her husband to the human police. She tried to divorce. And even asked her high priest to help her. They did nothing." Ava was looking at the image of a woman with fiery hair. Bruises were noticeable on her face and neck. It was as if someone punched her and then tried to choke her to death.
"This is— "
"You know... a woman always has a choice to leave," Jude said calmly.
"I know. I wasn’t talking about that Jude. I was talking about the punishment. You can even give her to the human authorities. I don’t know just not the binding?"
"I didn’t decide on the punishment, V. The higher-ups did." Jude said. "They need to make sure that a witch wouldn’t just take advantage of her ability to create chaos in the human world. That would endanger the whole species. Trillium exists to protect our kind. This binding would show everyone that Trillium is taking this matter seriously."
Ava pursed her lips in response.
She understood Trillium’s point of view about this matter. But that didn’t change her personal opinion about binding. Binding is just considered capital punishment and Ava didn’t think it was necessary.
The two of them arrived at the airport and immediately boarded the jet.
"If— " Jude started after a few minutes of silence. "If you think it is wrong then what would you have done?" Jude asked.
In response, Ava shrugged. The woman had been abused by her husband but as a witch, she had the upper hand to change things. She could have left, compelled her husband to sign a divorce paper, and leave her alone. But she didn’t. Instead, she compelled someone to kill her husband.
"This whole case... don’t you think it’s too fishy?" Ava asked.
