Chapter 150: An Option

"Did they investigate the case?" Ava asked.

"Of course they did." Jude frowned. "An agent investigated the case. It was proven that she killed her husband."

"Proven? How?"

"I just told you... someone witnessed it. And you can check her files." fгeewёbnoѵel_cσm

And Ava did exactly that. It was said that the woman had been abused since they got married twenty years ago. They had one teenager son who witnessed everything. However, on the day of the murder, the mother went to watch her son’s football game and many people saw her there.

She made sure to act friendly with other people, talked to the teachers and even the coach. There were a lot of witness who could put her there. It was as if... she intentionally did it.

At ten in the evening, she was informed that someone killed her husband. And he had been dead for a few hours before they found him.

Of course, her alibi was perfect.

The suspect on the other hand was a janitor who used to work in the school. It was believed that he met the wife when he was still working at the school. After a thorough investigation, someone finally came forward and testified that he saw the woman and the janitor a few weeks before the death of the woman’s husband. However, they couldn’t find any evidence of any conspiracy.

The janitor couldn’t even remember meeting the woman in the past. The woman didn’t give him any money either. The robbery wasn’t a plausible motive as he didn’t even take anything from the man.

At that time, the Janitor was drunk.

It was also revealed that the Janitor was another wife abuser who actually caused his wife’s miscarriage. Because of his past mistakes he drank all day until he passed out.

In the end, the janitor was convicted of manslaughter. It was believed that he just killed the victim accidentally because he was so drunk.

End of story.

That was until the Janitor’s nephew started spreading a story about the witch who asked his uncle to kill the man. Of course, no one believed him. Humans would never believe such a story.

So, the nephew started writing emails to cultists and other people who claimed that they are witches online. Then a community of fake witches actually believed his story. They were now creating issues for the woman and eventually, her coven.

They filed an appeal and wanted to actually prosecute the witch.

They had been watching the main house of the coven. As one could imagine this had caused a lot of problems for the local coven in New Jersey.

Ava eyed the images from the police report that the witch filed against her husband. All of them showed that she was beaten to the point of almost dying. She had broken ribs, broken nose, a broken hip bone.

It was just a mess.

So, why did she stay?

Why didn’t she leave?

Ava sighed.

No matter how powerful, she was still a woman. She might be a witch but at the end of the day, witches had emotions too. They were just like any women who loved flowers and chocolates and romance. And they were just like most people who would rather stay in a broken relationship hoping their partner would change somehow than accept the reality and move on.

The woman must have been scared of changes. Of starting over with her son. She only worked at a local bookstore and her salary wouldn’t be enough to send her son to college. A divorce would be messy.

So... she did the next best thing she could, to avoid all the hustle.

She got her husband killed and was now entitled to his insurance which was worth half a million dollars.

"So?" Jude asked her while enjoying his champagne. In a few minutes, they would land in New Jersey.

"I still don’t believe that this warrants a capital punishment."

"Hmmm. But the covens in NewYork and New Jersey were the ones who suggested the punishment. You see? I understand why you don’t think this was warranted. But if a witch could just compel someone to kill someone and then get away with it..."

"I know. I understand. It would be hard to draw the line after that." And it was obvious that Jude and Trillium wanted to use this opportunity to show their dominance.

Jude nodded. "At least you aren’t that dumb. I know you tend to use violence to get away with things. Politics is different. To maintain peace and order, one needs to make some hard decisions sometimes."

Ava nodded. This was why she would always prefer to work on the ground than sit behind a desk and deal with all these things.

She looked at the picture of the witch again. Then she sighed.

Some things just needed to be done for the betterment of the whole community.

After a few more minutes, their plane finally landed at an airport in New Jersey that Trillium, Witches and Lycans use. A black Mercedes took them to the coven where Jude would supervise the binding.

However, what awaited them was only chaos.

When Ava walked out of the car, she could immediately sense the tense atmosphere. She looked at Jude as she wondered if he could sense it too. A werelion should have better instinct than other shifters, right?

Jude met her gaze. His jaws clenched.

"Mr. Caro..." An older man walked out of the large black door of a two story suburban house. The man was followed by another woman who had a grim look on her face.

"I think... we may have a problem." The man said.

"What is it High Priest?" Jude asked.

"Miss Merkerson is dead." It was the woman who answered Jude’s question. "She— we found her at her house a few minutes ago."

Dead? Ava’s brow lifted. She immediately looked at the other people who walked out of the house. Some of them were crying, some had really sad looks on their faces. Just one look and Ava knew all of them were nervous, scared even.

But... why?
