Chapter 154: Starting a Fire

"You don’t even know how to start a fire?" Nora hissed. Ava knew that the woman was already irritated.

"Right..."

"Are you really from Alaska?"

"I wasn’t born here if that’s what you are asking. But I grew up here." Ava sat on a dead log and watched as Nora made the fire. "How about you?"

"I was born and raised here."

"Oh... must be nice right?" Ava looked up.

"What do you mean by that?"

"Well... it must be nice living in this paradise."

"Paradise?" Nora snorted. But didn’t say the rest of things that she wanted to say. Instead, Ava felt a deep anger rising from the woman. Did that mean Nora hated this place?

Perhaps she wanted to go to the city?

After a few minutes of silence, Ava asked. "So... are you married?"

"No? Why would you asked that?"

"Just curious."

"My kind would never let me marry a human."

"Oh..."

"You are a human, right?" Nora asked. "But you know about Matthew and our kinds."

Ava pursed her lips. She could only think of one reason why Nora would think that way. She’s a young shifter who haven’t seen the world. She must have never seen a witch before!

"Yes. I know about him."

"And do you know that shifters doesn’t like marrying humans?"

"Well..." Ava didn’t know how to answer that. This was simply false. Shifters marry humans all the time. "He asked me to marry him."

"That must be because he liked you— or your body so much."

"Ah... that must be it." Ava nodded.

"You are not upset?"

"Why would I?" Ava asked. "I really have a nice body."

"You—" Nora’s face reddened. "I didn’t know that women hailing from the city are this... vulgar."

"Oh... right. We can be like that." Ava wanted to laugh but she forced herself to act calm. Nora was traditional. It was as if she lived in a cave somewhere. "So... have you met other shifters before?"

"Of course. Our tribe is full of shifters. There are other tribes in the river too."

"And... someone must have liked you." Nora had raven black hair and dark brown eyes. Despite staying in the cold Alaska, she had healthy brown skin. Her nose was tall and straight, her lips full and pinkish. She was a beauty. An innocent beauty.

"I don’t like them."

"Ah... but you are a very pretty woman."

Nora only shrugged in response. By now, the fire was ready. So... Nora sat at the log next to Ava’s log.

"Why did you come here?" Nora asked.

"What do you mean?"

"You look clueless. You don’t know how to start a fire. And your clothes... aren’t really for camping."

"Oh... Right." Ava nodded. She actually wanted to tease the woman a bit. It would be very fun teasing someone like her. However, Nora was an innocent soul. And she knew this because she could feel the woman’s emotions.

She was really curious.

Nora was not only curious about Ava. She was also curious as to why Matthew chose to bring a woman like Ava here.

"I told you... I’ve never tried camping. So I just chose clothes that I thought would be appropriate for this trip."

"Well having a trip with a shifter is outside of the norm."

"Is it?"

"Yes. Shifters don’t really like humans."

Ava nodded at that.

She stared at the fire and wondered when will they finish preparing the fish. She was really hungry.

"Of course you can always tell him that you want to leave." Nora said.

"I don’t want to leave."

"But there would be no future for you and him. Shifters don’t marry human. Isn’t it good to let go earlier than hurt yourself later?"

Ava opened her lips but said nothing. She was honestly speechless as the woman’s audacity to give her an unwarranted advice. "He would marry me."

"I just told you— "

"Matthew doesn’t care about that." Ava shook her head. "He only cares about me."

Nora harrumphed as she focused her attention to the fire.

"Men like Matthew would always have bees following them around." Nora uttered in a low voice.

Ava just stared at her in response. How could someone still have beliefs like these in this time and age?

"There you are..." Matthew said as he walked towards them. Ernesto was walking beside him. Judging from Ernesto’s reaction around Matthew, it was obvious that he didn’t know what kind of shifter Matthew was.

The man should have no idea that Matthew was a Lycan. Or else, he wouldn’t treat Matthew so casually.

"Everything is prepared, we should start grilling." Ernesto said.

Matthew sat next to Ava.

"Did you like it?" Matthew asked.

"Preparing the fire?"

"Yes."

"Not really." Ava said. When Nora heard this, her temper erupted. But the woman managed to calm herself down.

Ava smirked at Matthew.

"So... are we going fishing later?" Ava asked.

"Of course."

"But— " Ava bit her lower lip.

"But what?" frёeweɓηovel_coɱ

Ava leaned closer and whispered. "I don’t know how to swim..." Shifters have better senses than humans. So, it was obvious that Nora and Ernesto heard her words too.

Hearing this, Matthew’s eyes widened. He knew that she was lying. How could someone like Ava didn’t know how to swim?

"Since you are planning to go fishing... why don’t you come with us? My friends and I wanted to go fishing too." Nora immediately chimed in.

"I was planning to spend some time alone with— "

"It’s fine." Ava interrupted Matthew. She held Matthew’s gaze for a few seconds before she added, "We can fish with them. After all, I have no experience in fishing. Plus it’s safer if we come with them. Right?"

Matthew could only sigh. He was staring at her as if he really wanted to know why she was doing it.

"I’m sure it would be very... very fun." Ava smiled in response.

"Alright... let’s go fishing with them."

"Thank you!" Ava dramatically squealed and hugged Matthew. Just as she was about to kiss Matthew, a deep unfathomable anger hit her core. It was coming from the woman who was staring daggers at them.

Of course, this wasn’t enough to scare Ava. So... instead of stopping, she gave Matthew a long... sensual kiss on the lips.
