"Human?" Ava heard someone whisper behind her.
"I know... right?" someone from the group whispered back.
However, Ava tried to ignore them as she held Matthew’s hand. This part of the Kvichak River was actually a little remote as the property was owned by Matthew and he didn’t do anything to create more lodges for tourists.
Matthew bought this place to relax and maybe hide for a few days. He never thought of creating more lodges or interacting with more shifters. He just paid Ernesto to tend to the property, clean it once in a while, and make sure that no one trespassed.
Aside from that, Matthew never actually interacted with the other shifters from Ernesto’s tribe. However, this wasn’t his first time meeting Nora.
The woman would come with Ernesto sometimes and bring Matthew fish, sometimes meat from a moose especially if Matthew came here right after the Moose hunting season.
The group continued walking until they reached another clearing.
But they weren’t actually alone.
On the clearing were a few other people who had been planning to fish.
"They are from the lodge about a mile away from here," Ernesto said. "Rich kids from all over the place."
"Lodge?" Ava asked.
"The Mountain Sports Lodge. Arrogant humans," a man standing next to Nora spoke. From the introductions earlier, this should be Nora’s brother, Cal. He is only a year older than Nora but he looked like a giant.
Matthew’s six foot five height was understandable since he is a Lycan but other shifters weren’t really as tall as him.
But Cal was.
The man should be about six foot four or five with shoulders even broader than Matthew’s. With his beard and mustache that covered half of his face, Cal looked intimidating.
Well... the fact that he was a Werebear should explain that.
Even Ernesto, Cal’s father was almost as large as his son.
There were only eight of them including Matthew and Ava yet, their group immediately attracted other people’s attention. This should be because... of their large stature.
Ava, who was already considered tall for a woman, looked like a dwarf next to them. Of course, the fact that only Ava looked really lean was also very noticeable.
"Ernesto..." a man from one of the group said. "What brought you here?"
"Carlos...my friend." Ernesto gave the bald man a broad smile. "I came to fish..."
"Ah?" Carlos acted surprise. His gaze immediately landed to Ava and Matthew. "You have visitors."
"Yes. I do."
"Is this the man who owned the property by the ravine?"
"Yes."
"I understand. Do you need... did you bring a boat? I could— "
"Father... who are they?"
A woman wearing a black with streaks of blue sports bra asked. She walked towards Ava’s group, her eyes immediately focused towards Matthew. In fact, it looked like the woman didn’t see the other men around Matthew.
What the hell?
Ava frowned.
For some reason, she found the woman’s eyes really irritating.
That’s what you got for being a mate of an attractive Lycan V, she chanted inwardly.
Women.
Fucking women.
The thought made her more irritated.
She wondered if Nora intentionally asked them to come here because of this woman. However, when Ava looked at Nora, she knew that Nora also didn’t like this woman.
"Marlena... this is my good friend Ernesto."
"Marlena? Is this the one who is studying to become a doctor?"
"A vet..." Carlos beamed proudly. "Yes. She came home for some weekend fun with her friends." Carlos gestured towards the group of people behind them.
"Father... introduced me to the others."
"Oh... I will let Ernesto do that. This is actually the first time that I have met some of his family members."
Ava lifted an eyebrow. Actually Carlos is a shifter as well. However, her senses told her that he is a really weak one. Perhaps, his ancestor was a shifter?
That meant that the woman named Marlena was also a shifter. Or at least she had the blood of a shifter.
"This is my son, Cal." Ernesto started introducing the group. "My daughter Nora. This is Mr. Graydon from the property next to mine and his fiancée... Ava."
"Ernesto... should we go?" Matthew said. Ava had a hunch that Matthew didn’t really like to talk with other shifters. But she didn’t know why.
Was it because the women in Marlena’s group were drooling at him?
Or that the other men were sizing him up?
"Perfect timing! Why don’t you just join us? We are planning to have a small contest... " Marlena said, blinking her eyes. Her eyes were still on Matthew which seemed to make Ava’s blood boil.
Was she jealous?
Why would she?
The fact that Marlena was definitely prettier than her shouldn’t make her jealous, right?
So what if Marlena looked like a model in her sports bra?
So what if her make up looked flawless? Or that her hair looked like they were shining?
Wait... does hair shine?
"We should— "
"Of course we will join!" Ava uttered. "Why not... right babe?" she elbowed Matthew.
Hearing this, a mischievous smile appeared on Marlena’s face. "Of course. Everyone is free to join. Actually... my father said he would gave the winner a thousand dollars and a tour to our lodge. Even a free use of the large master’s bedroom with it’s very own jacuzzi. Right, dad?"
"That—" Carlos looked at Marlena. "Of course. Why not?"
"Hey... you don’t even know how to fish!" Nora hissed behind her. "What the hell are you thinking? Marlena is a champion in the last Winter King Salmon Tournament! She and her brother always won!"
"Oh? That would make it livelier!" Ava clapped her hands. "Now... why don’t we invite your brothers too? Wouldn’t that make things... more challenging?"
Ava felt Nora’s sharp gaze behind her but she didn’t care. She only smiled at them then look at Matthew.
"Right babe?"
"Of course," Matthew smiled, his eyes sparkling with mischief.
"See?" Ava finally looked at Nora. Even Her Matthew liked the idea. She ignored the scowl on Nora’s face as she looked at Marlena. "When do we start?"
