FLASHBACK
"Matthew Graydon didn’t have a slave witch... is that confirmed?" Kenji asked his secretary Lucille as he read Matthew’s file.
"Yes, sir."
"Do we know why?"
"Unfortunately, we weren’t able to find out why."
"Are you sure about this? All of them have witches by their side."
"Yes, sir."
"Then about his childhood..."
"We didn’t find anything as well."
"So they tried to bury his past. How annoying." But it was expected. After all, Matthew was the future King. The Lycans usually care too much about their bloodline, they wanted to tell everyone that they are the superior race. Of course, they would try to hide a blemish.
Hiding their past mistakes isn’t really new. Lycans have been very reclusive in the past too.
"What about his mother?"
"We cannot find anything about his mother."
"That’s absurd."
"Unfortunately, this is the only info that we have on Mr. Graydon. Our spies are doing their best to find something more about the Royal Family but it has been very challenging."
"I understand. But I want you to focus on the witch on Matthew’s side. If he has anyone powerful next to him, we have to find out who and use it to our advantage."
"I understand."
While Lucille told him she understood his orders, Kenji didn’t receive any update about the witch on Matthew’s side. In the end, he concluded that Ava was the only witch that Matthew enslaved.
END OF FLASHBACK
So, what is this now?
Was it another witch?
Kenji frowned.
The weak expression that he had earlier vanished. If Matthew had another powerful witch by his side, it would be difficult to fight against them.
...
MATTHEW GRAYDON
"You have to leave," Ava said while looking at Marko. She couldn’t look at him. "They wanted to frame the Lycans. You have to leave now."
"Sire?"
Matthew pursed his lips. He was still staring at Ava, his face devoid of any expression. Yet it didn’t take a look for his cold facade to show some cracks. Longing and relief reared their heads.
And Matthew could only nod.
He examined Ava’s body. It looked like she had been through a tough fight. But she doesn’t have any visible injury. The only thing that bothers him was her clothes. Most of it has been burned.
Was it the explosion that Kenji told him earlier?
"I will take care of it," Ava said.
Again, Matthew nodded. The fact that Ava needed to hide things from him made him feel all sorts of reactions. His chest felt heavy, his body physically hurt.
Was that even possible?
But who could blame her?
He was weak.
He couldn’t fight back.
He couldn’t help her.
The realization hurt more than what Ava did.
It was his own fault.
The woman that was fated to be his couldn’t ask for his help because she was too scared to drag him into this mess. And now, here she was, trying to protect him... again.
Sadly, it looked like Ava hadn’t realized the reason behind her own actions.
"Matthew?" Ava finally lifted her gaze. Her eyes looked glassy. Was she trying to stop herself from crying?
The moment their eyes met, it was as if Matthew’s world had stopped turning. It was as if time stopped moving. The surrounding noise muffled.
And for a few seconds, Matthew could only hear his heartbeat.
Matthew lifted his hand and held her chin. He had a complicated look on his face while she... she looked relieved and sad and frightened.
Why was she scared? He wondered.
"Sorry..." Ava said.
But instead of responding, Matthew’s lips thinned. Then he leaned down and kissed her forehead.
"Let’s talk after this?" he asked.
"Alright."
"Good..."
"But you have to leave. I can’t drag you into Trillium. That would only complicate things."
"I know," Matthew gulped. He always knew that this title was a curse, a shackle. The future Lycan King’s title was something that he never wanted. From the day that they told him his blood was superior, he already knew that he would have a difficult future ahead of them.
He never wanted to be King.
He never dreamed of becoming one.
But the current circumstances are slowly changing.
He found his mate.
A witch mate.
Without the power of a King, Matthew would never be able to protect the people that he loved.
Love.
Big word.
"I know," Matthew smiled. He didn’t know if he uttered those words to Ava or for himself. Deep inside, all he wanted to do was pull her towards his arms, hug her, and promised her the world. But how could he promise something he doesn’t have?
Yet.
"We are leaving," Matthew said.
"Wait for me?" Ava said.
"Of course."
"Promise?"
He smiled. "I promise."
With that, he and his people slowly withdrew until they were already far away from the fog.
"That was a bit... dramatic." Shaman Gaas said. The man suddenly appeared next to him. On his other side, Baba also materialized.
Witches.
"Are you mocking me for being weak?"
"Everyone started weak," Shaman Gaas uttered, his eyes glued to the foggy area. Matthew didn’t know if the old man could also see what was happening inside. "It’s up to us to change that. Of course, if you die weak, then that is already your fault. You cannot blame anyone else other than yourself."
Matthew clenched his jaws. He already made up his mind.
Right. fгeewёbnoѵel_cσm
He is going to wait for her. In their Kingdom.
"What do you think will happen now?" Baba asked.
Shaman Gaas snorted. "Why are you asking me when you are the one who could see glimpses of the future?"
Baba sighed.
"Ah. It is going to be more troublesome, huh?" Shaman Gaas chuckled.
"I thought you love trouble?"
"Right," Shaman Gaas said. "I wouldn’t be here if... I like peace."
With that, Shaman Gaas slowly disappeared. "I’ll see you soon, Lycan. By then, I hope you are ready to face the world with her."
Hearing this, Matthew narrowed his eyes.
"We are leaving."
Baba lifted an eyebrow. "Of course," she then touched Matthew’s shoulder, and the two of them vanished into thin air.
