Chapter 189: Oath of Protection

"I’m here to apologize," Alex lowered her head. She couldn’t look straight in Ava’s direction. "I didn’t think they would try to drag you to the Pits. I thought they would make you create a specific potion for them. I thought they would teach you a lesson if you refused. I swear, I didn’t want them to kill you."

"She regretted it," Damon said. Unlike Alex, he was staring at her face. "She did not mean to do it to you."

"Please forgive me," Alex added.

"So you wanted me to come with the team?"

"Yes. We need you to accomplish the mission. We can try to find another one but it would take us a lot of time. Come with us and I promise to keep you safe. Coming with us is going to be beneficial for both of us."

"It is beneficial." Ava nodded. "Alright.... Since you are so sincere. I will come with you. But you have to do what you promise. You have to keep me safe. Even if it’s against your subordinates." Ava smiled before she revealed a crystal.

"What— "

"An oath Mr. West. You promise not to hurt or kill me and protect me from everyone else inside the Pits."

"The laws of witches don’t apply inside the pits."

"But it applies when you go out." Ava smiled. This was actually the Shaman’s idea. The Shaman wanted to cover all their bases and to do that, he created this crystal just for this oath.

Now that Ava thought about it, the old man was indeed very good at planning things.

As his student, Ava felt proud and excited to learn more from him. Though she always felt like the old man had been rushing things. She knew this might be because Matthew was waiting for her, but she also felt that there was still something wrong with it. She shook the thoughts out of her head as she continued smiling at Damon.

"That’s absurd. Why would you want him to protect you inside?" Alex said. "You could protect yourself. You even defeated— "

"I wanted to sleep soundly," Ava answered. "Did you really think I would trust you after what happened back there? I am going to that place if you promise to protect me from yourself and from them."

"You— "

"I’ll do it," Damon said.

"Good." Ava handed the circular crystal to Damon, and she started chanting the oath, and Damon followed. After a few seconds, the circular crystal trembled then it slowly disintegrated into thin air.

"Then I guess I will be seeing you a few days from now?" Ava asked.

Damon nodded and left the house without saying another word.

.....

Damon West’s Office

"Why did you do it?" Alex asked the moment they arrive inside Damon’s office. "That oath... is absurd! We don’t know what will happen once we are inside the Pits, Damon!"

"What did he do this time?" Christoff walked into Damon’s office. He must have heard Alex’s. "What?"

"He made an oath to protect that bitch. I knew it. We shouldn’t have — Can’t we just find another witch that could brew a damn potion for us? It’s not like we couldn’t protect another witch! I could protect her, for crying out loud!"

"What’s this all about D?"

"There was something else inside that house." Damon sighed.

"Something else? Another witch?"

"I don’t know." Damon took a bottle of alcohol from one of the drawers on his table and drank it. "Something powerful is inside that house."

"You mean... someone with an essence?"

Humans who received essence from Demons and Angels could feel each other.

"Again, I don’t know."

"How is that possible? I didn’t sense anyone in that house."

"The house has been abandoned for so long, yet no one dared to occupy it," Damon said.

"So the owner could be a powerful supernatural."

"Could be. Or someone like Damon." Christoff added. "So, why did you sign it?"

"Because I need her to come with us to the pits."

Seeing Damon’s eyes, Alex slowly smiled. "So you wanted to interrogate her inside the Pits."

"No. I am not planning to hurt her. I just need her close to me."

"We don’t even know if she’s an enemy or not."

"If she’s a friend, good. If she’s an enemy, then we have to keep her closer. It’s not a coincidence that a powerful witch like her would appear out of nowhere just at the right time that we need a new one for our team." Damon said as he clenched his jaw. "And I am going to find out the truth about her inside the Pits."

"You can’t kill her, though."

Damon’s gaze darkened. "Who told you I’m going to kill her?"

"You — No way!" Christoff explained when he realized Damon’s plan.

"She is going to be an excellent addition to our team," Damon smirked.

"How could you be so wicked? Damn... "

Damon just shrugged in response. Oh... it is going to be very... very fun.

AVA WOODS

Ava felt like she had been walking for a long time. So long, her feet started to get numb. But she wasn’t planning to give up just yet.

She thought of moving outside of the darkness that she was currently in. Practice was the only way for her to learn how to properly harness her dream walking abilities. In the past, she could perfectly use it when she was furious. When her blood is boiling. Or when she wanted to hurt someone.

In short, the only time that she could dream walk is if she’s upset.

But the old man told her to change that.

She took in another long breath and continued walking.

"Ava?"

"Huh?" Ava turned around when she heard Matthew’s voice. Or was that really Matthew’s voice?

"Ava? Where are you?"

It was Matthew’s voice!

"Matthew?" she uttered.

"Ava, can you hear me?’

"Matthew?"

This time, there was no reply. But Ava had to keep her calm. She wondered if this was something to do with the plane that she was in. Was it possible that she was only hallucinating?

Ava walked for a few more minutes before she found a door. She approached the door, and she immediately noticed that this looked exactly like the door at Matthew’s room in the mansion.

She wasted no time as she slowly opened the knob.

Then she saw Matthew.
