"You assumed that I wanted something."
"I am not dumb. The circle would stop anyone from listening to this conversation. You just said it, even magick doesn’t work."
"But you can use magick."
It was because the magick that she was using wasn’t from nature. But Ava wasn’t planning to tell him that.
"Are you going to tell me what you want?" Ava asked.
"I knew they didn’t send you."
"Whose they?"
"My enemies," he leaned against the dining table and gestured for Ava to sit on one of the chairs. But she refused to move. "You don’t need to know them."
"How did you know they didn’t send me?"
"Because you don’t have an essence inside you."
"Essence? So the rumor was right. You do have an essence."
"Surviving in this world would be difficult if I didn’t have one."
"What is an essence?"
For a few seconds, he stared at her in disbelief. "Are you seriously asking me that?"
"Yes."
"You knew nothing about an essence?"
She shrugged in response. Again, the Shaman said the information is lacking because the people inside forget about things when they go out.
"People with essences are real. And no, they weren’t gifted. They were forced to have an essence inside their bodies."
"Forced?"
"I won’t tell you the details. This isn’t your concern anymore. However, I have enemies and I am going to deal with them every time I come in."
"So, why did you want to talk to me?"
"I am going to hire you to Kill the target."
"Excuse me?"
"I’ve been trying to kill the target for the past year. To no avail. I think someone... one of my people is working for them."
"So, how could I kill someone that you can’t even kill?"
"You can use magick even inside this circle. I believe you are a high priestess — an excommunicated one."
"Oh," she actually liked this misunderstanding.
"You are powerful and arrogant. You would fit in this place."
"And my compensation?"
"A Grimoire."
"No, thanks."
"Of one of the most powerful witches that ever lived."
"Not interested."
"A witch from the oldest civilization in the world."
"Sumerians?"
"No. The Sumerian civilization is not the oldest one. It is the most preserved one."
Ava blinked.
"The reason they were known as the oldest civilization is just that they were able to preserve their writings. But humans existed long before that." The man added.
"So a grimoire before humans discovered paper? That doesn’t sound appetizing to me. I wouldn’t want to carry— "
"It was carved in a small stone."
"You mean stored inside a small stone tablet?"
"Yes."
"And why are you giving it to me?"
"Because I can’t use it." When she didn’t say a word, he added, "I am not a witch and I can’t use magick from nature."
"Then what kind of magick can you use?"
"Nice try, Eve." He chuckled. "You won’t get anything from me."
"At least I tried." she crossed her arms across her chest.
"So, the oldest civilizations were called Afrikans."
"In Africa."
He nodded. "Sumerian and Egyptian civilizations were founded by Blacks. Africans, to be more exact."
"So this grimoire belonged to a witch that existed long before the Sumerian. You know this doesn’t sound too convincing, right?" Plus, she would forget everything that he told her once she leave this place.
"The witch’s name is Lilith."
"Lilith?" Ava scoffed. Was that supposed to make it sound convincing? "Really?"
"You can laugh... I won’t get offended."
"Lilith, like the first wife of Adam? I mean...." Lilith is a pretty popular character in both TV and books. Lilith is also a very well-known female figure in both Mesopotamian and Judaic mythology. The woman was Adam’s first wife. However, she was chased out of Eden because she didn’t obey her very own husband. Seeing the man’s face, she sighed.
"Alright. Tell me about it,’ she said.
"Lilith is indeed Adam’s first wife. She never comply with her husband’s needs, so she was banished out of Eden. Broken-hearted and furious, she made a deal with the other gods. In exchange for more power, she gave them her pure soul."
"Wait... " Ava held her hand up. "Stop talking for a while." She took a deep breath and smiled. "Are you telling me that Lilith is the first witch?" What about the stories that she heard? What about the stories that Baba told her?
"Of course she was. Did you really believe that witches only existed because of angels? What bullshit."
Her jaws dropped.
What the hell is this man talking about?
"And what about the shifters?" What about the rest of the supernatural world?
"I am not talking about the things that didn’t concern me, Eve," he frowned.
"No. I just — This is the first time that I heard about that."
He snorted. "Did you really think that the witches would accept the fact that the one who created them... was a woman who was known as the mother of all evil?"
"I— "
"Witches are prideful creatures. Power makes you arrogant. It makes you think that you are special. That you are a superior race." He shrugged before he continued. "As the legend stated, Lilith became the first witch. And she’s the mother of all witches and shifters."
Ava frowned. What was this man talking about?
"What?"Damon snorted.
"I don’t... get it." This was different from what she learned. What is going on here? Was it possible that this lore was just inside this world? "Maybe you are confusing this with the history of this world. But I don’t— "
"You can choose to believe or just think of this as a drunken man’s inner monologues. Either way, I have Lilith’s grimoire, and I could give it to you after you kill that man."
Ava frowned. If Lilith was indeed the first witch, she would hide her grimoire in a very safe place. She would never share what she knew about the world. Meaning, that is not Lilith’s grimoire. But whose grimoire is it? Ava really wanted to know.
"Who is this man? The one that you wanted me to kill?"
"He is one of the four Duke. The Ruler in this world was called a King, and he has four powerful Dukes working for him. One of them is called Josef Asad. The most powerful one."
Fire appeared in Damon’s palm. He held his hand towards Ava and soon the fire danced and parted until it slowly morphed into a human’s face.
"Eh?" Ava’s eyes widened when she saw the face that was made of fire.
Ava’s face turned sour.
"This is Josef Asad?" she asked.
"Yes. Why?"
"Are you sure this is him? Maybe you just — Are you trying to jest Mr. West?"
"No. This is Josef Asad."
Ava pursed her lips as she looked at the fire.
"I want to see him," she said.
"It would be hard."
"I want to see him." That was an order.
"Then I could arrange that. However, we cannot get near him."
"I know," Ava said. "I will give you my decision after I see him."
"May I know why? Have you seen him before?"
Ava didn’t say a word.
She had never met anyone named Josef Asad before, but... she had seen his face.
In fact, the man looked exactly like the man she had been thinking about since she came here.
Matthew.
Her mate.
