Chapter 217: Her Trap

Ava gulped. She narrowed her eyes towards the Duke. "Why me?’ she asked.

"Why not?"

"There is no reason for you to pick on someone like me... who had... no one else," Ava said. The official story that everyone will know is that she was a criminal. Someone who came here because she had no other choice.

Damon and the others silently spread this story to make it look like she was helpless.

"There is always a reason for everything. Don’t you think so too?" he was smirking. He was clearly enjoying her discomfort at their close proximity. Ava gulped and turned her head away.

"I don’t think you understand the current situation, Eve," Josef said. He didn’t hide the mirth in his voice. Then he used his thumb and pointer to hold her chin, lifting it up so he could see her face. "I want you and I always get what I want."

"I told you I am going to change your mind but that isn’t permission for you to try and ruin my plans." He inched his face closer. "You see... I don’t like it when people ruined my plans. And the only reason why you are still alive was that... I find you entertaining."

She held his gaze for as long as she can but the fact that his eyes had the same exact shade as Matthew’s was wearing her down.

What the hell is wrong with this resemblance?

"So," Josef continued, "You better behave yourself and do as I say."

"Or what?" she asked.

"Or I will kill Damon and the rest of your friends."

"I told you... I never cared about them."

"And I already told you. Your words are hollow. It’s nothing but words."

With that, he let her chin go and took a step back, widening the space between them. She sighed in relief.

"Stay by my side. Don’t leave this palace without me or my permission. For now, you can read the books in this small office. It contains every bit of history that this world has to offer. Since you will be staying here... it would be best that you familiarize yourself with everything."

Ava said nothing as she watched him leave her inside the room.

Damnit, she thought.

.....

"What else is there?" Josef asked when he stepped out of the room. He glanced at the man kneeling not far away from him and signaled him to approach him.

"Nothing my lord. The rest... are still in the palace. They aren’t moving." freēwēbηovel.c૦m

"You are telling me that Damon and his men aren’t doing anything to try and rescue her?"

"Yes sir."

Josef squinted. He then walked towards his real office.

"I don’t think the man would abandon a woman like that," he said.

"There were rumors surrounding them and it is believed that she is just a mercenary from the other world. Damon West might have hired her because of her ability to brew potions."

"Is that all?"

"Yes, my lord."

Josef’s face morphed into a scowl. "No. It cannot be a coincidence." Josef, who had lived for hundreds of years, had learned that there is no such a thing as coincidences in this world or the others.

No.

Everything that happened has its very own purpose.

So why would she appear in this world now?

She walked inside his office and watched Ava from the crystal ball on his table. Ava was scanning the large array of books in front of her. She picked on a book about history, scanned it then put it back on. Then she started scanning again.

"And why was she doing exactly the things that he asked her to do?" Josef mumbled before he send the man out.

Ava didn’t even put up a fight.

No.

This is suspicious!

"Johnson!"

"My Lord!" Johnson appeared in front of his table. He was kneeling, his head lowered; an ultimate show of respect. The same respect that Ava didn’t show him!

"How was it? Did you take care of everything?"

"Yes My Lord, the concubine is already dead from poisoning. The news would reach the palace soon."

"And the others?" Josef was talking about the real ones who killed the prince.

"Death by a fire accident."

"Good. How about the news of Eve using his abilities inside the palace?"

"So far, no one dared to spread the matter. Especially after our warning."

"Alright. You may leave."

Again, Josef stared at Ava using the crystal ball. He was staring at her intently, observing her every move from the way she breathe in some air to the way she tucked her long hair behind her ear and the way she bit her lip in frustration before she closed the book in her hand.

The books about Demons and Daemons were hidden in the library. Though, Josef expected her to use her magick inside that room to find the books. And once that happens, he would be able to confirm if Ava was indeed the woman that he had been looking for.

He clenched his teeth and waited for her to get frustrated and use her magick inside a room that was supposed to prevent a normal witch from using their magick.

But nothing happened.

Ava never stopped reading the books. She looked serious almost as If she was in a dream-like state.

"Hm?" Perhaps... Realization hit him. He immediately got up and run towards the room. It’s been hours and Ava had been doing the same thing over and over again.

It was natural for him to be this suspicious!

** BANG **

The door opened.

"Hm?" Ava looked at him.

"What are you doing?" he inquired.

"What do you mean?" Ava asked. "I have been reading books. You told me to— "

"Stop the lies. You have been doing the same thing over and over again for hours."

"And?" Ava looked at him, almost innocently. "Was that a crime?"

This time, a realization hit him. He had been too engrossed in Ava’s action that he failed to realize something. It was him who fell into her trap.
