"When you were outside... what do you do?" Josef cut into his steak as he stared at Ava. When she didn’t answer, he smiled. "Erase that... I don’t want to know your past. I just want to know why you seemed to be good at investigating crimes. Perhaps..."
"Law enforcement."
"Ah..." Josef nodded. "Now I understand why you were able to find out about the truth."
"Truth..."
"I was not aware of the blood thinner."
Ava nodded.
"You should probably eat."
"No thanks."
"You will be working with me for a long time. You should get used to being with me." Josef started eating and for a few seconds, there was only silence inside the large dining hall.
The long rectangular table that she only saw in movies is now in front of her. Ava used to wonder what it felt when you are eating with someone at one of those tables. She doesn’t like the thought of it. Now, she was pretty sure that she dislike it. She couldn’t imagine herself spending her time in a place like this forever.
The sound of thunder brought her out of her stupor. She immediately thought of Matthew.
She could control her ability but the time that she could use it was limited. And now, she discovered that she needed time to recover before she could astral project again.
The old man called it limitations.
"Do you not like the food?"
When Ava didn’t answer his question, Josef raised his hand. A man wearing a black outfit appeared behind him.
"Bring the chef." Josef smiled at Ava. He was provoking her.
"I already had breakfast." Ava was actually telling the truth. She already ate before coming here.
"I asked them to make something that you would like," he was still smiling at her. "It seems that whatever it was that they made wasn’t that impressive," Josef said. "So... they should just die."
"I will eat."
"Oh?"
Ava put a sliced steak in her mouth.
"I didn’t take you for someone that... obedient."
"Alex was beaten black and blue," she said.
"It was an interrogation."
"That was not an interrogation. You knew she was innocent in the first place. It was torture and you god damn knew it!"
"What I knew doesn’t matter," Josef said proudly. "I want what I want."
Ava clenched her jaw. The fact that the man looked exactly like Matthew was revolting. How could a devil look like Matthew? She took a deep breath and continued eating. But she stopped when she saw the man earlier, dragging an older woman towards them.
"What— "
"It looked like she didn’t like what you made," Josef interrupted the words that Ava was about to say.
Ava pursed her lips in response. She watched as the woman struggled and cried. But the woman said nothing. She didn’t beg him or asked for his mercy. She just silently struggle like a hopeless animal that was about to be slaughtered.
She eyed Ava before she lowered her head.
"I told you. If she wouldn’t like it... You will die."
"Yes, my lord."
Ava blinked. She could sense the woman’s sadness. It wasn’t fake. Does this mean...
"Kill her."
Before Ava could react, the woman’s head was already rolling on the floor.
Ava turned her head away as she cursed the man who was now staring at her.
"You didn’t have to do that," Ava said. "It wasn’t her fault that I already had my breakfast before I came here."
"That is a lesson," Josef answered. "I presume that you understand what I mean?"
Ava nodded without saying a thing.
"Also, since you will be working with me, I already asked my people to gather your things. From now on, you will be living inside my mansion."
Ava gave the man a sharp gaze.
"You want to — " freewebnøvel_com
"No. I have no intention of keeping you as a prisoner. I told you... didn’t I? I am going to convince you to stay. This is just a part of that."
Ava pursed her lips and said nothing. The man looked calm as he continued eating.
"Eat. Then we will talk about your job in my study."
Ava’s eye twitched but she said nothing and continued eating her food. Satisfied at her sudden obedience, Josef smirked then he took a sip of his wine and finished his food.
After they finished their meal, Josef took her to a large office with two tables. One of which should be his and the other... was supposed to be hers.
"The concubine was sent to the village to atone for her sins," Josef said before he sat on his chair. "She killed her own son."
"She didn’t stab him," Ava said.
To be honest, this room was impressive. It was large. And the walls were transformed into bookshelves with various books that looked older than her. They looked heavy and... mysterious. She wondered if she could find anything about the person who opened the portal in those books.
"You are not listening," Josef said.
"I— " She dragged her gaze towards him. Just as she expected, he was frowning at her. What the hell Is wrong with this guy? She thought inwardly.
"I would prefer if you not think about something else when you are in front of me," Josef uttered. "Do you understand?"
Ava observed the man’s expression for a few seconds before she smirked. "You really think that I would agree to that?"
"Is there any reason why you wouldn’t?"
"Number one, there are more things in this room and in this world that I find more interesting than you Duke. What made you think that you could control what’s on my mind?"
Psychotic son of a bitch, Ava thought inwardly.
"To be honest... I was hoping that you would say something like that." Instead of showing anger, the man smiled. "I would... think that you are suspicious if you suddenly agree to everything that I say."
"This was a trap," Ava stated.
But instead of answering her, the man approached her. He stood a few feet away from Ava, his eyes placid yet a devilish smile on his face was enough to irritate her. The smell of something spicy and fresh reached her nostrils. She hated the smell of spice.
"What do you think?" The Duke asked.
