Samaria let out a desperate sigh as she stared at Baba.
"The Chalice... our family had been protecting the relic for years before you were even born and you handed it to a Lycan," Samaria uttered. After hearing what Baba told her, she could practically guess what happened to the relic that had been with the Munik Family for centuries.
"When you told me you were chosen to become the next guardian of the library of knowledge, I thought you had removed yourself from worldly emotions. To think that you would do this to our ancestors."
"No one knows anything about the relic," Baba said. "It was something that could protect us. I thought giving it to someone that needed protection would give it justice."
"Justice, you say?"Samaria snorted. She looked at the now dark skies. Baba had been here for a few hours and now, the skies have started to darken. Sadly, it looked like the sky was as empty as her current heart. "The relic was a gift, Babaylan."
"A gift from who?"
"Only the matriarch should know the secrets of our relics. We, the Munik family had been serving nature for hundreds of years. We have secrets that cannot be fathomed by normal men, secrets that aren’t supposed to be understood by humans and beasts alike."
"Samaria..."
"That relic, the one that you stole, was given by a demon."
Her words changed Baba’s expression.
"A demon? Who?"
"I cannot tell you that."
"Samaria, it is critical that I know the name of the demon so— "
"So you can summon it?" Samaria interrupted her. "You— a Babaylan— are going to make a deal with a demon just to honor your promise?"
"I— "
Samaria’s gaze stopped her from speaking the rest of the things that she wanted to say. No matter what she says, Samaria clearly made up her mind.
"The cosmos is a beautiful thing, Babaylan. It is endless and you are not supposed to break its laws. What you did— clearly break its laws."
"I didn’t know about the demon."
"The relic contained the sigil of a demon from the demonic realm. It was made to protect. But demons don’t just give you something without receiving something in return."
"Are you saying that the thing that killed Matthew’s mother is..."
"I cannot say."
"Samaria. That child— "
"Could be a body that a demon prepared Babaylan. You must be prepared to kill it." Samaria said in an almost gentle voice. "Demons cannot set foot in this plane without a powerful body that could contain their devastating and destructive powers."
"Matthew is not a vessel. I have seen him grow up. He— He is the future King of the Lycans. How could a demon and a lycan." Baba sighed. "A Lycan’s bite could kill demons. Why would a demon make a Lycan its vessel? That wouldn’t make any sense."
"Do you really think so?"
Baba stared at the woman who raised her. Samaria Munik was the most powerful witch that Baba knew, next only to that old man Gaas. Samaria was almost as old as Gaas and is considered one of the most powerful priestesses in the world.
Unlike Gaas, Samaria was always kind and generous. Though, she can be very ruthless just to protect her family. She was just like Baba.
Baba pursed her lips and let out another sigh.
"I have talked to Shaman Gaas and— "
"Gaas," Samaria lifted an eyebrow. Then she stared at Baba’s body. "Did you lose a piece of your body?"
"Pardon me?"
"That old man has always been ruthless. Judging from your reaction it is clear that your body is still intact. Meaning, he had taken a liking to you."
"The old man doesn’t like me, I can assure you that." Baba took a sip of the tea that Lita served earlier before she left the two of them. "It was only because of his apprentice."
"Apprentice? He had taken one?"
"Yes."
Samaria turned away. "And this apprentice had something to do with you?"
"I— I was supposed to make her my apprentice but there were some mishaps."
"Would you like to explain it?"
"No," Baba answered almost immediately.
"The guardian of the Library wanted to take an apprentice? That’s— "
"She’s special."
"I would love to meet her."
"No. I mean— I— "
"I am too old to have another apprentice Babaylan. I wouldn’t steal her away from you."
"No. That’s not what I meant. I just— It’s complicated." Baba told Samaria everything about Matthew and his abilities that made him unique. This also includes Matthew’s skills, the fact that Matthew could practically run faster than any Lycan, and even his abnormal magick sensitivity. However, Baba didn’t mention anything about Ava.
The mating and the prophecy inside the library of knowledge were something that she didn’t want to reveal. After all, she wasn’t even sure if Ava was indeed a witch. Of course, the revelation about the relic that helped Matthew’s mom get pregnant could change everything.
"You are hiding something from me."
"You said it. There are things that we aren’t supposed to understand."
Samaria gave her a serious gaze, something that instantly made her uncomfortable.
"Samaria, please don’t blame me. I just have to abide by the laws of the library. I cannot share some pieces of information and— "
"I understand. There is no need to explain yourself. But if I may be honest, your words only piqued my interest in this apprentice. Of course, I still wouldn’t dare meet her. Not when that old man is actually teaching her magick."
If it was magick, Baba silently thought.
The infamous Shaman Gaas wasn’t just known for his temper. He was also known for being very smart and knowledgeable about demonology and angels. The old man was well known for not only his magick but also his study in realms.
The fact that Ava is currently in that place was proof of that.
What Baba didn’t know is if the old man was actually teaching Ava magick... or something else.
