Ava held Matthew’s hand as she sat next to him. Emotions run inside her like a damn tornado. Anger and sadness. Regret and guilt. Then there was relief. Relieve that he was breathing. He was alive.
And that’s the most important thing.
As if on cue, Matthew’s eyelids moved. But he didn’t open his eyes. Slowly, Ava reached out and put her palm on his forehead. Just as Baba told her, his fever was still there. His body was hot.
Baba said that if Matthew wasn’t a Lycan, he was long dead by now.
Ava’s heart felt like it is going to break. It felt like someone had stabbed a blunt knife inside her chest and had been slowly twisting it for fun. Was this just because she was her mate?
After a few minutes, Ava got up and walked out of where they were keeping Matthew. Baba told her that this is a highly secured facility filled with traps. And the only way to get in is to use the concrete rooms that Baba made. Using this, it would be easier for Baba to detect any unwanted presence or enemies. Moreover, if someone unwelcome will come to this place, other traps would welcome them.
Some of which can be very brutal.
"You saw him," Baba said. "He wasn’t like that on that night. He killed a Lycan and a witch in a heartbeat. Even I wasn’t as confident that I would be able to defeat him in a fair fight."
"So, he had become stronger," Ava said.
"Just like you," Baba didn’t remove her eyes from Ava’s face. "I can’t sense any magick coming from you. It’s either you have become stronger than me... or you are just really good at hiding your strength."
"Maybe both," Ava said in a calm tone. She had been through a lot inside that place. She had fought with demons and other creatures. It was already expected that she would become stronger after going to The Pits.
"Staring at you felt like I am staring at a sharp knife," Baba said. "It hurt."
"I am taking that as a compliment."
Luckily, the Shaman didn’t accompany them in seeing Matthew or he would have scolded Ava for being too confident. The old man would call this arrogance. But to Ava. This was just self-awareness.
She had acknowledged her strength and her growth. And she had to acknowledge the fact that someone out there is always stronger than her.
For instance... Lucas.
She shook the thought out of her head.
"What are you going to do now?" Baba asked.
"Don’t you already know the answer to your question?" Ava fired back.
"Hah.... And here I thought the training changed you."
"I don’t understand what you mean."
"Nevermind," Baba shook her head. "So revenge?"
"Revenge?" Ava snorted. "That’s Matthew’s job. I wouldn’t take the satisfaction away from him." These people hurt Matthew. And while Ava wanted to hurt them back, she knew that Matthew must have wanted to have his very own revenge.
The only thing stopping him was the fact that he didn’t want to drag Ava with him.
Of course, this all changed now.
She was no longer the weak Ava from all those months ago.
"If not revenge then... what are you going to do?"
Ava smiled at the older woman.
"Chaos," Ava answered without batting an eye. Matthew never wanted to be King. He only wanted to do it because of Ava. So what would happen if Ava destroy that useless Kingdom?
Ava felt Baba stop walking. She felt the older woman’s gaze towards her back.
But Ava didn’t stop walking. She smiled as she stared at the dark tunnel in front of her.
Yes.
Chaos.
She is going to give that Kingdom what they want. ƒгeewёbnovel.com
Unbeknownst to her, the moment she thought of the word chaos, Matthew’s pointer finger moved.
.....
"A Shaman?" King Lycan Josiah Graydon uttered when she heard the latest report from one of his witches. She looked at the woman as if he wanted to make sure that she wasn’t jesting with him.
"Yes. Only a Shaman or a Priestess as powerful as Ulva or Babaylan could create an enchantment like that. There is no way that Miss Woods could do that."
"Are you certain?"
"Yes, your majesty."
"And... Ava was inside that house?"
"Yes, your majesty."
"I see..." King Lycan pursed his lips. He squinted. There was a reason why Matthew chose Ava as his witch. Josiah had sent his people to research that woman’s past but he found nothing. At first, he thought it was because Matthew deliberately erased her traces.
But now it all made sense.
Ava Woods must be a student of a priestess or a shaman that is silently supporting Matthew!
Another Priestess or Shaman is not that bad, the King thought.
No. This was far from bad.
"Good. Send my message. Instead of taking care of Ava, I want you to invite her and her... mentor." Priestesses have their own covens but most Shamans don’t. They love to wander around and are extremely asocial.
This is why the witch and even the King believed that Ava’s mentor could be a lone Shaman. Someone that had been hiding from the eyes of everyone.
Of course, Mourning Pits is the perfect place to hide
"Do you have anything else to say?" He asked when he notice the witch’s reluctance.
"Her Majesty, Queen Luna already sent a team to take care of Miss Woods."
"What?"
"She wanted it to be done as soon as possible."
"That woman!" he hissed. The Queen is a power-hungry Lycan and everyone, including the King, knew that. All she wanted was to hold power and to do that, she wanted her son to become the next King.
"Stop it. Tell her people, it is under my command."
"I understand," the witch bowed again.
"And prepare a feast ... tell Ulva to personally convince that woman." In the middle of a civil war, another powerful witch by his side isn’t actually that bad.
