Chapter 252: The Queen Luna’s Doubts

Margery squinted the fire from the candle not far away from her.

In the past few days, something weird had started to occupy her head. It was something that she never would have thought of tens of years ago. Something that made her wretched. Something that made her doubt everything.

It was the fact that she was supposed to be as powerful as her very own mate.

Margery thought about the past of how the King found her just years after he married Matthew’s mother. No. She wanted to change that. The King didn’t just find her.

They found each other.

Mates.

Destined to be together.

Fated to be next to each other.

The attraction was instant. She had given him her body on the very first night after they met. He marked her and owned her and she became his.

Or at least she had always thought she is his.

For years, she believed she was superior to other women in his life. She had given him the most children, she had stood by him during tough times. Him and her belonged in each other’s arms.

But the recent events had her doubting everything.

The King changed when he received the news that Matthew had a stronger bloodline than Drigo.

How could mates just change their treatment towards each other?

From the books, mates love each other no matter what happens. How could he change that much?

As Queen Luna, she had become one of the most influential people in this Kingdom but that influence wasn’t enough to make her understand what had happened.

Then the King started favoring Matthew.

Before this, the King never even looked at Matthew and acknowledge his presence. Matthew lived outside of the palace, in a palace without guards and knights. In a place where assassins could go in and out without any problems. In short, the King had neglected his own son before he was informed that Matthew had the most superior blood among his children.

Was blood really that important?

Is it more important than being the child of his own mate?

Moreover, since that news arrived, the King had been spending less and less time with her. Despite this, she didn’t see any changes in her body. Margery had heard stories about mates in the past. They said that mates couldn’t stay apart for a long time as it would literally cause them physical hurt. The thing is the people who said these were people who didn’t find their mates. So, they couldn’t really say that they were telling the truth!

Aside from this, the last Lycan who actually found his mate was already dead. Right now, the only Lycan who actually had a mate was the King and Margery. In the past, Margery tried to look for Lycans hiding all around the world and asked them if they knew anyone who found their mates but her search was futile.

It seems that no one has met another Lycan who actually met their mates.

Meaning, King Josiah and Queen Margery Graydon were the only Lycans lucky enough to be able to marry and mark their mates.

But now that she thought about it...

Was it really luck? Was it possible that...

"You look troubled?" Ulva voice’s made her flinch. She removed her eyes from the fire and looked at the latter. Ulva was her strongest supporter. Ulva had been very loyal to the King and because she was the King’s mate, Ulva had been loyal to her too.

Of course, there are times when she would hate Ulva for being too domineering, for being too demanding. But Margery understood that Ulva was only doing those things for the King and the Kingdom.

"I’m fine," Margery said and watched as Ulva sat opposite her. She waved her hand and a tea set appeared in between them.

Magick.

Unlike other witches inside this Kingdom who aren’t allowed to do magick unless they are ordered to do so, Ulva could do whatever she want. She is that special.

"I have brewed some new calming tea," Ulva said, in a low cold voice— it was something that she was already used to. "Would you like to have some?"

"That would be perfect," Margery said. In response, Ulva did the tea ceremony before pouring her a small cup of tea.

"What is bothering you, your majesty?" Ulva asked. "Isn’t this the time to celebrate? His Highness Drigo will soon become the next successor."

"Anxiety," Margery smiled after drinking her tea. "Can you believe that? I have lived for so long and yet... things like this always made me nervous." While Margery wanted to tell her about the doubts inside her head, Margery knew that Ulva is also loyal to the King. She couldn’t risk it. "Tell me Ulva... do you think Drigo deserved to be King?"

"Your Majesty— "

"Be honest."

"Yes, your majesty. I have watched the young prince since he was a baby. He was raised to be the next King. He deserves the crown more than anyone else in this world."

"Even if his blood wasn’t the strongest?"

"Your majesty... after His Highness Matthew left, His Highness Drigo now had the strongest blood. Currently, he is the strongest in this kingdom."

"What if Matthew would come back?"

Ulva stared at her for a few long minutes. "Is this what is bothering you, your majesty?"

Slowly, Margery nodded.

"Very well... I believe it would be impossible for His Highness Matthew to come back. He already killed someone in that form. It would be difficult for him to become human once again. Even magick couldn’t do that. Only his mate can suppress his wolf and turn him into a human. Sadly, the odds of finding his mate is close to none."

"Why is that?" Margery asked.

"Well, stronger Lycans have stronger mates. Just like how His Majesty found a strong Lycan like you, your majesty." Ulva gave her a forced smile. Clearly, Ulva was forcing herself to comfort her.

Ulva continued, "His Highness Matthew was destined to have a mate that is almost as strong as him. I believe that His Highness went to Alaska to try and find a strong Lycan. He wanted to hide it from everyone. Even the King suspected this."

Ulva continued. "Despite all the money and technology that he spent. He wasn’t able to find his mate. It could only tell us something. It’s either, his mate is already dead or... she’s not born yet."

Margery nodded. Of course, she already knows these things. She gulped and pretended to look down. Ulva had been with her for years but right now, she could only trust herself.
