"So..." Finally, Ulva’s words made the King smile. "That man isn’t as worthless as we originally thought?"
"It seems that he was just hiding his cruelty," Ulva said.
"But that still wouldn’t explain the fact that he refused to make an oath with other witches but chose that Ava instead."
"I believe this is Babaylan’s scheme, your majesty."
"Babaylan?"
"The news that we received about The Sangray family must be accurate. It all made sense now. Babaylan was the one who set up Ava inside the Mourning Pits. It would be logical to think that she was the one responsible for hiding Old Man Sangray and his chaperon."
The King squinted. "Are you telling me that this is all Babaylan’s scheme?"
"It should be. It made the most sense. I believe Babaylan sent her here to cause some chaos and stop the coronation. That woman... wanted Matthew to become the next King."
"Is that so?" King Josiah started smirking.
"Yes, your majesty. Moreover... I also believe that it was Babaylan who picked Ava and not Matthew."
"Explain."
"I believe that Babaylan secretly trained Ava. She might be Babaylan’s apprentice."
Hearing this, the King smirked. "So that witch wanted Matthew to become King." To be honest, that wasn’t too surprising. The King tried his best to make Babaylan serve him but that woman only wanted to serve Matthew’s mother. At first, the King didn’t understand why Babaylan had been protecting Matthew’s mother. Slowly, he understood that Matthew’s mother must have done something to help Babaylan in the past. Something that earned the latter’s loyalty.
And now, Babaylan is paying for that through Matthew.
Babaylan must have promised Matthew’s mother to make Matthew the next King.
"Not bad," the King said. "Since they so wanted to stop the event, it is only proper that we help them." He got up and poured himself more wine. "The fact that Babaylan sent her here only means one thing. Matthew is alive."
"When Ava was under the spell, she looked confused. I have checked her over and over and knew that there was no magick that could interfere with the spell inside her body. The spell was properly working. So, I wondered if she knew where Matthew is. However, Ava insisted that she was here to find Matthew. I believe this was something that Babaylan told her."
"Good." The King nodded. "Very good! Now... since they wanted to stop this event. Let’s help them, shall we?" King Josiah smiled. "Make it so that the Queen will blame Ava for her son’s sudden... troubles."
Ulva looked at her king then she nodded.
"I understand your highness," Ulva said.
"Ah, one more thing. Have you confirmed that old man Sangray was no longer at the pits? Did anyone really see him walk towards the Pits?"
"Yes, your majesty."
"What about... his records?"
"I have reasons to believe that Babaylan also hid them."
"So, you are saying that Babaylan has the records?"
"Yes, your majesty."
King Josiah snorted. It seems that he really needed to teach that woman a lesson that she would never forget.
"You may leave now," King Josiah said.
Ulva bowed before leaving the King’s room.
Unbeknownst to them, their conversation wasn’t exactly as private as they originally thought. Ava stare at the back of the King for a long time before she decided to find Ulva.
The King’s plan was very clear.
They are going to harm Drigo and blame it on Ava.
Then they must be planning to detain her and create a trap for Baba.
Knowing the Queen’s dislike towards Ava, it would be obvious that she would immediately make Ava the primary suspect if something happens to her son. After some time, Ava decided to stop astral projection and finally go back to her room where the dummy was still sleeping. Right now, Ava just wanted to kneel in front of Old Shaman Gaas and thank him for his wisdom.
After all, it was him who gifted her a puppet that looked exactly like Ava. Standing at the dummy sleeping soundly on her bed, Ava sighed. She could never imagine that she would find this thing very useful. After casting another round of spells that would act like the battery of the dummy, Ava teleported near the castle where Kieran was staying.
During their conversation, Ava told Kieran that she is going to think about working with him. After all, the reward that he offered was pretty good. She told him it would take some time before she gave him her decision. Obviously, she just wanted to have the time to investigate everything that he said about his current circumstances inside this place.
Ava used a few spells to reach his room undetected, bypassing the line of witches that were already guarding the place tightly. She used the window and walked inside Kieran’s door fully expecting him to be asleep. Since she was invisible, she had no problem if he had company. Ava looked around the room as she silently thank the Shaman for all the knowledge that he imparted— knowledge that was very helpful for this type of... Work.
"This is the second time that they sent someone to kill you in a day!"
Ava froze when she heard Erenes’s angry voice.
"Are we really going to wait for Ava’s help? I can make you leave this place!"
"And that would only kill you," Kieran responded.
Ava found the two near the door that would lead them to the bathroom. She could still hear the water running and the smell of the blood in the air. What happened? Ava wondered as she walked closer.
"Kieran I promised your mother that— "
"Erenes, this is my decision. I cannot let you and your daughter die just because you broke your oath. Ava would soon find me and help out."
"Why put too much trust on someone you don’t even like?"
"My personal opinions don’t matter. She is the best person that could help me out. I knew that she would never trust the King or anyone in this place."
"I can— "
"Enough. Just— Just make the body vanish." Kieran sighed and walked towards his room, his hair was still wet and so was the rest of his naked body.
Who walks around naked like that?
Ava had to turn her head away.
Staring at any good-looking body would be very disrespectful to Matthew!
