Matthew’s POV
A hundred years ago, a Lycan with a mate was normal. But time and technology changed everything including people’s mindsets. Lycans and other creatures had to be more careful in case they risked exposing themselves. Because of this, their actions had to be limited, controlled in every way possible.
At this time and day, as far as Matthew Graydon was concerned, mates were considered a legend. Because in the sea of six billion humans, and approximately a hundred thousand shifters all over the world, chances of meeting your mate is close to none.
One needed to receive the moon goddess’s blessing to be able to have one. He had accepted the fact that just like his brothers and sisters, he too, would not have his mate.
But fate was a funny thing.
Just as his family started talking about him marking a different, random woman, his mate appeared.
Alive, healthy and very human.
Before Ava Woods walked in on that parking lot, the wolf inside Matthew had been lethargic. It screamed inside his head, begging to come out. To avoid problems Matthew stayed in the parking lot, waiting for the brutish instinct to calm down.
Then she walked in.
Dark brown hair that looked the color of Earth, forest green eyes that could enamor anyone with just a glance. The woman was a walking fairytale. Despite the concern in the woman’s eyes as she treaded towards his car, Matthew thought she looked... divine to say the least.
She was tall, five foot seven. He could feel the strength humming from her body. She must have practiced martial arts.
While he forced himself to calm down, the wolf inside him suddenly took over, almost causing an accident. He hated his wolf then.
As he approached her, Matthew realized something.
The attraction that he felt was instant but... she didn’t look too happy to see him.
She’s human, his wolf reminded him.
Yes, humans.
They are different.
As they exchanged a few words, he soon realized it.
She wasn’t just any human.
She was a witch.
Then came his dilemma.
Witches and Lycan’s don’t mate.
To be more specific, witches don’t have mates.
He doubted his wolf then.
How was it possible? How could a Lycan Royalty have a witch as... mate?
Ludicrous!
He attempted to calm the desire that surged in his blood. It didn’t take too long for his wolf to overpower his senses. He took over, tried to show dominance.
But it failed.
Ava Woods wasn’t just any witch.
She was his witch.
And the future Lycan King’s witch cannot be weak.
While he scolded his wolf, the atrocious wolf proudly chided at Ava’s antics.
He was the strongest wolf, it said.
He cannot have a weak mate.
And just when Matthew thought he wouldn’t see her again, she showed up in his office. Dressed in all black, she walked into his world like an alluring prey. But he knew that the woman wasn’t a prey.
He had seen her records by then.
And he knew that his mate... would never become a prey.
Ava Woods was working with Trillium. An independent organization hated by many. She was trained to kill both witches and shifters.
Beautiful and lethal, the wolf inside him laughed.
A part of Matthew wanted to find out the truth about their fate. He wanted to know why a witch was his mate. So he read books, did his research and came up with nothing.
So, he did the next best thing. And that is to keep her close by his side.
His wolf was overjoyed.
And while a part of Matthew was alarmed and worried about the future, he couldn’t deny the growing hunger that he felt for the forbidden. His insides would churn when she was around. His body craved hers.
His wolf wanted a small touch, a small kiss.
But Matthew wouldn’t do that to a woman who wasn’t aware about their intertwined fate. While he coveted her, he couldn’t do it without knowing the truth.
This has been causing an internal struggle inside him.
Seeing her so close, so enticingly close has filled his head with fervid passion, something that made him swelter with lust. The predator inside him wanted to strip her bare, lick her until she begged him to shove his dixk inside her glistening pxssy.
The other part of him wanted her to acknowledge that everything about them was beyond logic. It was perfectly confusing and enticing. But it was just as sinfully alluring.
It drove him insane that Ava Woods had so much control. She was too strong, too independent, too confident. It made him mad that he felt like she didn’t need him.
His wolf wanted him to cuff her, drag her to his kingdom and keep her there until she gave them her freedom. But Matthew? He wanted her to like him, adore him, and maybe... just maybe... someday love him how a woman loves someone. A love not born from the need to stay together for fate.
Was that too much to ask for?
"I’m ready," Ava’s melodious voice interrupted his stupor. "I will start chanting now... so please don’t get inside my protective shield."
"Protective shield?" he asked in amusement. "Did you think I would do something dangerous to you?"
"I don’t trust you," she answered without batting an eyelid.
Damn. She was always good with her words, he couldn’t help but wonder if that mouth was just as good at something else.
"Alright," he nodded and stood just outside of the circle.
"I will start now."
He nodded as he extended his senses. They were currently in his room, the safest place in this mansion. Equipped with bulletproof windows, the place was full of enchantment from the witches who were employed by his family. This room could survive an explosion and could keep a fire out for a few minutes.
That Magick that was used around this room isn’t entirely foolproof but it would be enough for him to escape in case of some emergencies.
He watched as Ava started chanting some archaic words, some of them existed since even before his great great grandfather was born. Eyes closed, Ava slowly spread her arms just as her chanting turned louder. The light coming from the thirteen candles that encircled her dimmed before it became brighter.
Just when a suffocating aura enveloped the room, Ava finally stopped chanting.
However, the current atmosphere changed when Matthew smelled something that made his face contort into an ugly scowl.
It was the smell of trouble.
It was the smell of another powerful Lycan who just arrived in the mansion.
And hell... it wasn’t alone.
