Seeing the old man’s flustered reaction, Matthew leaned back and started drumming his long beautiful fingers against the wooden table, a slightly devilish smile was apparent on his face.
"Matthew— "
"You old folks have always been like this. Why decide on the next King when the current King is alive and well?" Matthew interrupted the Queen. He then looked at his own father. "Once the current King is dead... then the rest could just kill each other. Survival of the fittest, isn’t that right?"
"You— How could you spout nonsense in this court?"
"I told you! He isn’t fit to be King! He does not respect the council or the current Royal!"
"The fact that he has a stronger bloodline doesn’t mean he is exempted from our laws! We could— "
"And what laws did I break, Duke de Jumio?" Matthew asked. He looked at his father and asked. "Was there a law about telling the truth?"
"I believe, it is time that we end this meeting." The King got up. "It’s pointless."
"What about Drigo’s proclamation?" Queen Luna asked.
"Matthew was right. I am alive and well. Why name an heir when I could still live for the next hundred years? And I for some unknown reason, I die... then isn’t that the time to see which one is fit to be King?" With that, the King left the room leaving everyone as if this does not concern him at all.
Queen Luna could only grit her teeth silently as she watched her mate leave her to fend for herself. Then, she started glaring at Matthew.
Something about Matthew had changed. The Matthew that would avoid conflict was no longer there! This Matthew might sound playful and sarcastic and maybe even careless but Queen Luna knew that she could no longer underestimate him.
"Since King Lycan is no longer here then I guess, it is time for me to leave as well?" Matthew said. "What do you think, Queen Luna?"
Queen Luna pursed her lip. She glared at him.
"Of course, it is still better to join your sl*t of a witch than to talk about the things that concern the King— " Queen Luna wasn’t able to finish her words when Matthew suddenly grabbed her neck.
"Your Highness! What are you doing?"
"Your Highness!"
"Matthew!"
Almost immediately, panic ensues as Matthew slowly lifted the Queen into the air. Seeing the Queen struggle to breathe, Matthew smiled.
"What did you just say?" Despite Matthew’s actions, his words were as gentle as the smile on his face.
"Matthew let my mother go! She is still the Queen— "
"How could a Queen be this... weak?" Matthew sneered at Drigo. "How could someone who found their mate be this... weak?"
"Ugh— you— " The Queen struggled to breathe and speak. Her feet were already dangling in the air. Luckily, Matthew’s grip wasn’t really that tight.
"Tell me," Matthew continued. "How could someone like a prince easily do this to a Queen Luna?"
"Matthew! What do you think you are doing?" Ulva’s appearance only made Matthew beam. "Let go of the Queen right now!"
To everyone’s surprise, Matthew obliged.
"Next time that you talk to her like that..." Matthew said. "Your head will need to find a new body."
A deep suffocating silence enveloped the room. Everyone stared at Matthew and then towards the Queen who was so pale, she looked like a sheet of paper. Tears glistened from the Queen’s eyes. However, no one was thinking about what the Queen felt.
Right now, everyone only had one thing on their mind.
How could a Queen who was known to be the mate of the current King be this weak?
How could someone like Matthew easily subdue a Queen?
Not many people understood what just happened. But Drigo was different. He had experienced Matthew’s wrath in the past. At that time, the wounds and cuts that Matthew gave him couldn’t be healed by magick. Of course, his mother knew this. But the rest of the Lycan community didn’t.
"Your Highness, please follow me. The King wanted to talk to you."
Matthew looked at Ulva.
"Apologies but there were many people who wanted to talk to me."
"Many people?"
"Yes," Matthew answered with confidence. He then looked at the noble Lycans who were obviously siding with him during the discussion earlier. "Some people had been working with witches to cause chaos inside our Kingdom. Because of this, many noble representatives wanted to talk to me. Obviously, my priority is the betterment of the Kingdom and the safety of my people. Don’t you agree with me... Priestess Ulva?"
"I—" Matthew’s question was a trap. If Ulva says no and that the King wanted to talk to him after hearing all that, it only means that the rumors about the King not caring about the current situation inside the Kingdom were true.
Saying otherwise would mean that Ulva was silently giving Matthew permission to talk to the nobles before the King. That could easily give the other the idea that the King was already biased and is siding with Matthew.
Aside from this, Matthew had been showing his fangs since he arrived. Saying yes to the question might mean that not even the King could control Matthew!
"Since you agreed, then shall we do it in my office?" Matthew looked at the nobles. "Gentlemen?"
Without waiting for a response, Matthew walked out of the door.
Ulva expected that no one would follow Matthew. After all, he just disrespected the King and Queen and everyone else in this room. But she soon realized that Matthew’s show of power was enough to convince a few people to stand by his side.
The next thing that Ulva knew, seven other nobles followed Matthew out of the room.
Ulva looked at Queen Luna’s furious face and then towards the hatred in Drigo’s eyes.
Sadly, the two are clearly weaker than Matthew.
And this in this world— in their world— being weak might just be as good as being dead.
