Chapter 282: Violence

The thick silence that wrapped inside Matthew’s room was broken when Ulva, Ava, and some other witches walked inside. Almost immediately, the smell of thick blood assaulted their senses.

Seeing the gory scene in front of her, Ava immediately looked around and found Matthew calmly drinking a glass of wine by the window. His hand was in his pocket as he stared outside. He calmly stood there, unbothered by the sight and smell of blood that surrounded them.

"What took you so long?" Matthew asked. He turned and gave Ulva a sinister smile.

"You— your highness— Can you provide me a reason why you chose to kill my witch? "

"Clean the place," Matthew said. "As much as I love blood... its sight would not entertain Ava."

Ava gulped. A sudden discomfort sat in the pit of her stomach. She stared at Matthew’s nonchalance appearance. The clear indifference and that smug smirk reminded her of someone else’s.

It can’t be, Ava thought inwardly.

"Your highness, may I know why you killed her?"

"Why do you always ask questions when you already know the answer... Priestess?" Matthew said. Soon, his eyes found Ava’s. His lips twitched and Ava could clearly see how Matthew tried to control his emotions that had been running rampant since Ulva and the rest arrived.

Priestess Ulva’s expression darkened. But she said nothing. She used a spell that immediately clean the room, removing the blood and its smell as well as the rest of the mangled body of a woman.

"Priestess Ulva, do you know how much I abhorred witches?"

"Not as much as I think Your highness," Ulva said without hiding the sarcasm in her voice. "Clearly, you have been sleeping with one."

"She’s an exception."

"As the future King, you cannot have the luxury to have an exception. The other witches are talking. They wanted you to have a contract with them. This is for your own safety."

"And you think I need their protection?"

"That— "

"Should I kill them all, Priestess?"

"Your Highness..."

Matthew narrowed. "Do I need to kill everyone to prove a point?"

"Your Highness. The witches and Lycans have long— "

"The blood of witches disgusts me, Ulva. But if given a chance, I would kill every one of them. That would be me, doing the world a favor."

"Your highness!"

"Tell them not to approach me again. Or I will cut their throat and watch them bleed. Then I will allow them to heal themselves before I remove their limbs and slowly, they will die by my hands." Matthew said with a beam on his face. "Just thinking about it gave me butterflies."

Ulva’s face turned uglier as Matthew finished his wine that looked like blood because of the light inside the room.

"Your highness, the witches have always respected the Lycans. We had lived peacefully with the Lycans for hundreds of years. It wouldn’t make sense for you to do this now that you are about to be King! The rules— "

"What rules?" Matthew interrupted her.

"Is there a way for me to change your mind?" Ulva asked.

"No."

"Do you know how this would only put Ava in danger?"

"I can protect my people, Ulva," Matthew said. "I am no longer the child that watched my mother die. Or... did you want me to show you what I am capable of?"

"There is no need for violence— "

"Sometimes, one needed violence to prove a point. Or did you think I could achieve my goals by sweet talking you?"

"You— "

"We both know it would never work." Matthew scoffed and looked out of the window. "Violence has always been a part of our history. Perhaps you have forgotten how we fought against armies of humans. How we allied ourselves with the byzantine empire and won wars, slaughtering people whom we thought were a threat to our existence. Violence has been etched into our bones, it is a part of our DNA. A part of our being."

Matthew started walking towards them. The same calm expression was on his face. He stood just a few feet away from Ulva.

"In the past, we enslaved witches and this hasn’t changed. Let me remind you how things worked in the past," Matthew added.

"This is no time to talk about the past— "

"The past... " Matthew snorted. "You know nothing about the past, Ulva." ƒгeeweɓn૦vel.com

"That— " Ulva swallowed her nonexistent saliva. For some reason, something about Matthew’s calm expression is telling her how dangerous he currently is. It felt like standing in front of a huge boulder that was ready to crush her anytime.

"In the past, the Lycans would kill anyone they deemed as weaker than them. We— We thought of ourselves as higher beings. We are faster, stronger, and smarter. In the past, witches who would dare approach a Lycan could get killed without warning, without reason. In the past, the Lycans had started a campaign against witches to control them and stop them from revolting. That was how it worked."

"This is not the past."

"And yet you wanted me to take a witch as a slave? Just like how Lycans always did it in the past." Matthew retorted. "You wanted me to act like someone who lived with the Magyars?"(Finno-Ugric ethnic group native to Hungary. In this novel, they are the ancestors of the Lycans. Or at least some of the Lycans fought with them. During the 4th millennium BC, the Uralic-speaking people split up and dispersed. Some of them met a few Lycans and lived with them for a while. AUTHOR note: I am slowly writing a history book for the Lycans and Werewolves where they participated in major wars and stuff like that.)

"I— "

"You wanted me to act like someone from the past. Killing a witch without rhyme or reason is something that they do in the past, no?"

Ulva speechlessly stared at Matthew. She opened her mouth, wanting to retort his words but ended up closing it without saying a word.

Matthew was right. The fact that Lycans had been enslaving witches started a long... long time ago.

The Prince was using this reasoning to do the things that the Lycans of the past used to do! How preposterous!

But then again, she couldn’t say a word against it as Matthew had a point.

....

Again, I am creating a history books for the novel. Most of it will be the wars from the past but I will include how the Lycans had participated in these wars! You can check out my Patreon, i will be posting some of them for free!
