"Mates," Ulva stared at Ava’s expression before she turned her head towards the large garden in front of them. Today, they were having tea in the small gardens just next to another palace. In this Kingdom, each prince and princess has been given a palace to live in. Right now, they were just next to Prince Matthew’s palace as Ulva was actually the one who was visiting Ava.
"I am sure you understood what that meant?" Ulva continued.
Ava frowned but still, she nodded. She watched as Mara poured them some tea. After that, Mara took a few steps back.
It was such a beautiful day for some tea outside. The sky is clear, it wasn’t exactly hot or cold but the wind coming from the trees nearby was pretty decent. In short, it was a nice relaxing afternoon.
"I’ve heard of it," Ava answered. This time, Mara made them some Earl Grey tea. One of Ava’s favorites.
"Lycans have mates and so are most of the shifters," Ulva said. "Sadly, the dwindling population of the shifters and Lycans made it hard for them to create stronger bloodlines."
So it was about bloodlines, Ava thought inwardly. Again, Ulva came here to talk to her about her relationship with Matthew.
"Though, Lycans aren’t as fortunate as the others. They cannot just infect others with our bites. An ancient curse made them that way."
"I know." Ava had heard about the curse of the witch because of a Lycan’s Promise. And she knew exactly where this is going.
"One of these days, Matthew shall find his mate and when that happens," Ulva’s eyes never left Ava’s. She squinted at Ava’s face. "He will leave you."
"I am aware." To be honest, Ava wasn’t in the mood to talk about this now. It had been days since Matthew spoke to her. And it was slowly affecting her sanity.
"And yet you still let him touch your body. You still spend some time with him— "
"Priestess..." Ava gritted her teeth. "I don’t think my personal sex life is any of your business."
"Matthew is going to become the next King and that is my business."
Ava rolled her eyes inwardly.
"What do you want?" Ava decided to drop all the pretense. This woman was wasting her time! "I was about to see Matthew... " Ava uttered. And this woman just arrived here, talking about things that Ava already knew.
Of course, Ava found this suspicious. However, Ulva had been like this since... Matthew proposed. The woman would visit her almost every day and remind her about the past of the witches and Lycans.
The woman would then tell her that Lycans and witches cannot be together for various reasons including the fact that magick and Lycans cannot coexist. Then she would tell her about how a Lycan’s Promise can break a witch, literally.
"I want you to think, Ava," Ulva said. "Think about what is going to happen to you once Matthew found his mate? What do you think will happen if Matthew found another woman? Wouldn’t that make you crazy?"
Ava narrowed her eyes but said nothing. Seeing this, Ulva added. "Have you heard about a werewolf’s mate?" she asked.
"Yes." There are various differences between a Lycan’s mate and a Werewolf’s mate. First, a werewolf can only mark one woman and that was supposed to be their mate. If the werewolf will reject his mate and mark another woman then, the mate will suffer an excruciating pain that could kill them.
Another thing is the fact that Werewolves don’t really tolerate harems or reverse harems.
They mark one woman and they are going to be with that woman until they die.
Or not.
Actually, there are other ways to remove a mark of someone’s mate.
But that method is too cruel and it was unexplored. In fact, only Shaman Gaas’s grimoire had actually mentioned this method.
Ava wasn’t sure if the werewolves were aware of this method. All she knew was that it wasn’t that well known. In fact, she didn’t know that such a method existed when she was still working with Trillium.
"Did you know that a werewolf’s mark will vanish after five years if... the one who marked them died?" Ulva said.
Ava opened her mouth but quickly closed it as she shook her head. She knew about this from Shaman Gaas’s grimoire but she would never do something that would make Ulva suspicious.
"Did you know that one can actually forcibly sever the bond of mates if they would mark an already marked woman while... mating with them?" Ulva said.
"You mean.. Rxpe them," Ava uttered. Yes. Rape was the only way to forcibly sever a bond. It was absurd. It was cruel. And once again, no one knows if someone was crazy enough to do that.
"Lycans... aren’t as devoted as that. For instance, the King had a mate but he had already marked Matthew’s mother before he even found his mate." Ulva smiled. "And he had marked his other wives too."
"What was your point Priestess?"
For a few minutes, Ulva just stared at her with her lips pursed, eyes filled with disgust.
"Matthew— can mark as many women as he wants but not you. He could mark a human or another shifter or another Lycan. Everyone but you and our kind. Isn’t that tragic?" Ulva said.
Before Ava could say another word, Ulva seamlessly added. "So I suggest that you distance yourself while the Lycans Promise haven’t altered your sanity. yet. Ava, you are a good witch. Strong and young and I... as an elder would not want you to waste your life just because of the Lycan’s Promise."
"Sounds caring." Ava nodded. "Convincing even."
"But what made you think that I am still sane?" Ava asked, her lips lifting into a cruel grin. "All this time, you have been assuming that I would lose control if Matthew marked another woman. Have you not considered the fact that I— have already lost all the control that I have?"
**BANG**
A bolt of lightning suddenly hit a nearby tree. The smell of burning wood immediately spread in the air. However, Ava and Ulva didn’t seem surprised to hear that loud sound even though the skies had no signs of any clouds.
But the silence that followed was soon interrupted by a witch running towards them.
"Priestess... something urgent happened!" the witch said.
