Chapter 280: Physical Contact

"And what did you say?" Baba frowned when she heard that Matthew asked Ava to marry him.

"You don’t look too happy," Ava responded. She sighed and turned her head away from the mirror. Now that she thought about it, she didn’t have any friends that she could talk to about things like this.

Marylis, her sister-in-law, used to be close to her. Or at least that’s what she thought. Now that Marylis wasn’t showing any signs of improvement and her brother, Phil was still in that form, Ava couldn’t help but feel lonely.

"Did you say, yes?"

"Look, I know that Matthew was like your son but I don’t have anyone else to talk to," Ava explained. "I told him no." As expected, Baba’s face changed. Relief flashed in her eyes. Seeing this, Ava didn’t know what to say.

Why did she have to call her again?

Right.

She had no one else to talk to!

"You know what— "

"Why did you say no?" Baba asked just as Ava was about to tell her that calling her was a mistake. That it wasn’t an emergency.

"I just— " Ava sighed. "I don’t know."

"He is your mate."

"Right. But— "

"But what?"

"For some reason, I felt like... " How should Ava explain it? She felt that Matthew was just playing along with her? Like... like he wasn’t what he used to be? "I just felt like... I’m not ready for something like that. Especially now that Matthew is fighting against the throne. I don’t want him distracted by some needy female witch."

"Is that the only reason?"

Ava nodded. Of course, she couldn’t just tell Baba that Matthew had changed. Aside from the fact that she had no proof of her instinct, she couldn’t even pinpoint the thing about him that changed. It was like, he was the same but not the same? He looked the same and act the same but something is silently telling Ava that something is wrong.

"Now he suddenly became busy and refused to even sleep in the bed with me." This was just the tip of the iceberg. Matthew refused to touch her after she decline his proposal. Obviously, this made her sleepless!

But how could she complain?

She literally said no to his proposal!

"So, you called me to talk to him," Baba pursed her lips as she realized the real reason why Ava called her. "What made you think that Matthew would listen to me? Especially when it comes to his... mate?"

"I just— you are his mother. Not biologically but he grew up with you."

"That doesn’t mean he is going to listen to me when it comes to you," Baba said.

"I always knew you would say something like that." And yet, she still chose to call her. This was how lonely Ava was. She had no close friends or any friends. No confidant. No ally.

Now that Matthew refused to communicate with her in this place she felt... lonely.

She let out another sigh.

"The witches here... they hate me," Ava said.

"That’s expected."

"If they knew that Matthew actually wanted to marry me, I am certain they would try to kill me."

"The witches in that place are different from the witches here."

"I can see that," Ava said. "By the way, I haven’t heard from the Shaman for days. Is he alright?" Shaman Gaas was a free spirit. Or at least that’s what Baba used to describe him. He travels alone and is always doing something on his own. Many people knew his name but not many of them actually saw him.

"The old man must be doing some excavation somewhere. He wouldn’t tell me anything." Baba said. "But he told me to take care of you. So... if you need anything. You tell me or that old man is going to curse me to death."

Baba smiled at that.

"Right. I will let you know. For now, I am going to— " Try and talk to Matthew? Ava rolled her eyes inwardly. "Go outside," she continued.

"Hey, Ava?" Baba said.

"Hm?"

"Matthew agreed to come back to that place because of you."

Ava blinked. Was Baba telling her to say yes, instead?

"Alright. I will keep that in mind." Ava said before she ended the call.

........

Matthew’s study

The number of times that his gaze had turned blurry increased.

Matthew balled his hands so tight, his knuckled are turning white. Beads of sweat can be seen on his forehead as he gritted his teeth. The silence inside his study was suffocating, to say the least. The pressure that surrounded him only made the already dimly lit room, darker.

"My lord..." a shadow appeared next to the chair located across from Matthew.

"Did you find it?" Matthew hissed.

When the Shadow didn’t answer, Matthew’s expression turned worse.

"I need that ring!" If his demon soul wouldn’t completely fuse in this Lycan body, he wouldn’t be able to touch Ava without hurting her! A physical contact would drain her magick until she would die.

He cannot let that happen.

"Ugh..."

Blood slowly trickled down Matthew’s lips. He used his sleeves to wipe it.

"Find that ring!"

He didn’t have much time. He needed that ring as soon as possible or he would lose the opportunity to have this body. Moreover, the wolf already knew about his existence, and once given a chance to retaliate, that wolf would surely do everything to prevent him from coming out again.

"Your Highness?" Marko Calida’s voice came from outside his study. "Miss Sharmaine, the assistant of Priestess Ulva is here to see you."

"Ugh— " Matthew swallowed the blood coming out of his throat as he struggled to maintain his sanity. He needed to control himself or... he would end up killing everyone in this palace!

"Your Highness?" Marko called out. frёeweɓηovel_coɱ

"Let her in," Matthew uttered in a low voice.

She drank a glass of water before she looked at the woman who stood just a few meters away from him. Brown hair and green eyes. The woman before hi looked almost like his Eve. When Matthew realized what this woman was doing, he hissed.

Unable to control his anger, he got up and attacked the woman. Not long after, the smell of blood lingered inside the study.
