"You— " Ava’s eyes were wide. She looked up and let out a loud sigh. As much as she wanted to, she couldn’t just curse Baba for her stupidity.
Baba told her about the relic that her family owned. She stole it and gave it to Matthew’s mother hoping that it would protect her from the curse and poison that the witches had been giving her. As a result, she got pregnant, and then there was Matthew.
"I don’t know what to say," Ava said. And Baba nodded in response.
"You are not supposed to be here," Baba got up and grabbed one herb in front of her. Then she calmly processed it so it can easily be used in case she wanted to create some concoctions.
"You gave her a demon’s relic?" Ava asked. She wanted to confirm if she heard the right thing.
"A demon relic does not protect someone. I naively thought it would protect Julliane and gave it to her. As a result, my family... disowned me and removed me from the family books." Baba lifted her head and stared at Ava. "It was worth it."
"Baba..."
"Julliane saved me. I owe her my life. It is only right that I repay it."
"By creating a demon."
"Matthew is not a demon."
"You just said it. The relic belonged to a demon. Matthew’s soul was just a fragment of this soul and now that the demon is free— " Ava bit her lower lip. "Is there any other way to take him down without hurting Matthew’s body?"
"Only if you knew that demon’s real name."
Josef is not the demon’s name. Ava was certain of that. She had heard that Demons guarded their names with their lives. There is no way that that man would just give her his name.
"And the possibility is close to zero. It had never been done before."
"Maybe not in this world," Ava uttered. "Maybe the Shaman knows a way."
Baba said nothing.
"Look I know you made a mistake but if there is a way to— "
"You don’t understand," Baba uttered. "Matthew and whoever it is that is inside his body are one. They can no longer be separated."
"But we can suppress the other. A Lycan’s blood, the wolf should be the reason why it wasn’t able to use that body when Matthew was born. Wolves are the weakness of demons. If we could—"
"I made a mistake," Baba said. "And I cannot fix it."
"How did you know that? We could try different things! We could ask the Shaman. I would even go back to the Pits to— "
"Enough!" freewebnøvel.coɱ
"Baba— "
"He is Matthew!" Baba said. "Matthew had told me about his dreams. It was of a woman who can cast magick with her mind. A woman whose eyes were so green it looked like the forest."
"It was me from the future," Ava recalled that Matthew already knew about her ability when they met. That man even used this to blackmail her.
"It wasn’t."
"What?"
"The woman was wearing different clothes. I figured it could be from the past."
"The past?" Ava blinked. She recalled the painting of a woman with the same face as hers from Josef’s study.
"The woman was wearing different clothes and Matthew said... she was speaking a different language." Baba sighed as she picked up another herb. "At that time, it did not make sense. Matthew had no magick flowing in his veins. There is no way that he could see the future or the past without magick. At that time I thought this was only because he was special. I never thought that those were memories from... his real soul."
"Memories?"
"It was the only explanation that I could come up with. Matthew was thinking about his past. The past that happened before his soul had become fragmented. A soul is a very complicated matter. " Baba sighed. "His soul should have disappeared a long time ago. But it didn’t. This led me to believe that the one who trapped him inside the pits was another one of his kind. They did not mean to kill him but stop him from coming here."
"And you are not going to do something about it?"
Baba stopped what she was doing and sternly looked at Ava. "I would not do anything that would hurt Matthew."
"Even if it was your fault."
"It was fate. Whatever happened was part of his fate. There is a reason why he is back, a reason why he met you again and I am not going to stand in the way to stop him."
"That’s stupid. That Matthew is clearly not— "
"Are you telling me that you are not going to accept your mate if he is a demon?"
Ava immediately stopped talking. Can she really accept a demon mate?
She blinked and thought of losing Matthew. For some reason, her chest started hurting, physically.
It felt like thousands of needles hit her heart at the same time. She paled and held her chest.
She had never thought of that before.
"You don’t need to answer that," Baba said. "Though, there was a time when I asked Matthew the same question. And he told me one thing. He said it wouldn’t matter what you are. He would stand with you no matter what."
Ava said nothing.
"I think I need to go back," Ava said.
"This Matthew might be darker... but he is still Matthew," Baba added.
"I know."
"He might not be the one that you knew but I can assure you one thing. Matthew would burn the world just to keep you safe."
Ava smiled. Who knows?
The Josef that she knew was definitely different than her Matthew.
"This Relic..." Ava asked as she thought of Lucas. "Do you know the location of the others?"
"I know a few. May I know why you are asking?"
"Just curious."
"Again, you cannot do anything about Matthew without hurting his body. So if you— "
"I understand Baba." Still, a low possibility does not mean it’s impossible.
Soon, Ava bid Baba goodbye. Then Baba helped her to teleport back to the Kingdom. When Ava opened her eyes again, she was already back inside the room.
She wasn’t surprised to see Matthew waiting for her inside the room.
