After what felt like forever, they finally arrived at another door. Then another.... And another....
"How come there are so many doors?" Matthew asked.
"How should I know? Are you tired? You can put me down since— "
"Shhh...."
Ava pursed her lips as if she had swallowed a lemon rind. She wanted to say a lot of things, act irritated but she doesn’t have any valid reason to. Ava didn’t want to act childish in front of a thousand-year-old demon!
All she could do was pretend that this didn’t bother her at all.
"Glad you could come..."
The two stopped walking when they heard an older man’s voice not far away from them. They quickly realized that it was coming from a mirror.
"Do I even have the choice?" Ulva retorted, her voice cold. Ava didn’t need to see her face beneath her hood to know that she was already scowling because of what the man said. freeweɓnøvel~com
"Why did you convene this meeting?" Ulva asked. "Did something happen?"
"Always direct to the point, eh?" the man said.
"There is no need for us to talk about something else aside from what you were doing."
"Ah... You never change."
"Did you find something?"
"I believe you should ask us if we found... someone."
Ulva was quiet for a few seconds. "You found someone?"
"Not exactly." Someone responded.
"Then tell us!" Another voice responded.
Soon, Ava and Matthew realized that other people were also in this meeting.
"Patience. We are not complete yet. We are waiting for some people."
Someone hissed then a chuckle echoed.
"I see..." someone said. "So you have called everyone?"
"Yes. We believe we found something important that could benefit everyone. Isn’t it good to share the news?"
"Please, everyone is aware that you are not that generous," Ulva said. "What do you want in exchange?"
"Ah... as expected..." the man let out another chuckle. While Ava and Matthew couldn’t see him, the two assumed that he was someone older because of his throaty voice. "This is why I love talking to you Priestess..."
Ulva hissed in response.
"Calm down," the man laughed. "I heard that a Lycan prince just succumbed to a poison?"
The man’s question made Ava frown. Was he talking about Kieran?
"And?" Ulva asked.
"I want the body."
"He died a long time ago," Ulva said. "What made you think we still had the body?"
"I’m not thinking. I am asking you to give me the body. Who cares if he died last year or last month? We know Lycans never burned the bodies. They bury them to be one with Earth."
"I thought that was the last time— "
"Priestess... Priestess... that was twenty years ago. I want another body now."
Ulva was silent for a few seconds.
"The body has been laid to rest. Another witch is guarding it."
"And? Is that a problem?"
"Why do you need a dead prince’s body?" Ulva asked.
"Isn’t that to have a wonderful test subject? A Lycan’s body is naturally strong. You don’t understand how strong they were until you accompany me in one of my experiments."
"Still, you know how hard it is to obtain one."
"Hard?"
"You are asking too much," Ulva said. "Over the years, Lycans have— "
"Then what about the experiments? If you really wanted to create a human as strong as a Lycan, you should provide me with one."
"Alright, I will find a way. So what about the news?"
"I believe everyone is already here," another one chimed in. "Should we start?"
"Wonderful," the man sounded amused. "To update everyone, number 3451 is responding well to the treatments. She’s going to wake up very soon and by then, we will determine if her body could withstand a celestial being’s fragment."
"We’ve been waiting for more than twenty years," Ulva said. "If we cannot succeed this time, I believe it is only right that we let her go."
"Are you suggesting that we terminate Operation Michael?"
"We took her in because of her body. We were confident that she would be able to withstand all the modifications in her DNA. We did everything to make her stronger. The fact that she fell into a coma more than twenty years ago, was enough. We have waited for too long. We need results."
"You are always impatient priestess. Did you think we can get results overnight? We wanted to put a celestial inside a human’s body. Luckily, we were able to get this far without wrecking her body."
"How long do you think before she would fully gain her consciousness?"
"A month? Or a year?" the man answered. "So far, her brain activity is increasing as the day passed by."
"Who would have thought she would survive? When she tried to kill herself that night... I— "
"Let us not talk about that night!" Ulva said. "Is this the only thing that you have?"
"Ah... the Hybrids."
"What about the Hybrids?" Ulva asked.
"The humans wanted more. They wanted to become stronger."
"That’s only expected. Humans have always been greedy." Ulva said.
"They found something..."
"What is it?"
"It has not been proven yet but they found a DNA that they could alter to make them stronger and faster. Obviously, this would take years before they could do such a thing."
"And? Are we letting them do it?"Ulva asked.
"We can let them do this much." The voice said. "As long as this does not affect us, it should be fine. In fact, we can benefit from their experiments. After all, a smarter, stronger, and faster human is easier to study than someone whose DNA was never altered."
Ulva nodded.
"I haven’t seen him in a while," the older voice said.
"He has been saving his energy. He is going to move to a younger body very soon," Ulva said.
"Have you found the perfect vessel?"
"We did. We just needed to do a few more things and he should be fine."
"You should be more careful," the voice said. "We have received some alarming news lately."
"News?"
"An unknown one has descended, but his presence vanished almost immediately." The voice said. "It could be hiding in a plane."
"That only means, it could be hiding in any of our planes," Ulva said.
"Precisely."
Hearing this, Ava swallowed her nonexistent saliva. She was pretty sure that they are talking about Matthew.
