Chapter 290: Spying on Ulva

Unbeknownst to them, Ava and Matthew were also plotting to destroy whatever it is that they planned. On Matthew’s insistence, Ava used her magick and stood outside of the King’s room to ’spy’ on them.

"Can you please remind me why we are here? Again?" Ava asked, a little irritated. Matthew said that if she won’t help him, he would do it alone. How could she allow him to risk himself just for this? She gritted her teeth in irritation.

She thought that Matthew was doing this just to test her magick. And maybe she was right.

"Ulva would use this door. We are going to follow her."

"Not the King?’

"No."

"Why her?"

"Follow the dog, Ava," Matthew whispered, his hot breath brushing against her cheek.

"You are too close."

"I am doing it to avoid being discovered."

"No one can hear us," Ava said.

"We don’t really know that. Do we?"

"I— " she wanted to argue. Tell him that she’s confident that no one could hear them. But in the end, she shut her mouth in annoyance. "Fine. Do what you want."

"Oh, I will." He spoke. This time, his lips touched her ear. Goosebumps skittered through Ava’s body. She took a long deep breath, trying to calm her nerves.

Clearly, Matthew was doing this on purpose.

"She’s coming," Matthew said just before the door opened, revealing Ulva. The woman had a dark look on her face before she locked the door and used some magick to reinforce it. She used another magick to create some sort of a seal which was definitely overkilled as it would detect anyone that would open the door, including the person inside the room.

Was she trying to lock the King inside the room?

Ulva then put on a hood and started walking towards the large stairs that should lead her out of the palace.

Of course, the two immediately followed her. However, they quickly realized that Ulva wasn’t going to the stairs but to another room just next to the stairs. Before Ulva opened the door, she looked around, making sure that no one was near her before unsealing the door with the same magick technique that she used earlier.

"We should follow her," Matthew said.

"I have a better idea." Ava had a smug smile on her face as she held Matthew’s hand and pulled him towards the wall. The two of them seamlessly got inside the room by walking through walls before Ulva locked the door with the same magick spell.

"Didn’t know you could do that," Matthew said. Of course, Ava just snorted in response. Her control was much better thanks to the old Shaman’s hundred of years worth of magick knowledge.

The Shaman had once told Ava that not many witches were currently as powerful as her because of that grimoire. After all, it contained everything that the old man learned for the past seven hundred years of his life.

"We should stay close," Matthew said as he suddenly held her waist and positioned her just in front of him. "Or she will notice us."

Ava tried to elbow him but how could she even hurt a six foot four or five Lycan?

"She won’t," Ava said, irritated.

"She’s walking around the table," Matthew responded without letting her go.

"You should let go of me," Ava said. Of course, she was also observing Ulva. The woman was silently chanting a spell as she paced around a table. If Ava was right, she was doing this to unlock something.

"Nope," Matthew said, mirth apparent in his voice. "I need to get close in case, you decide to teleport out of this place." He was whispering again.

Ava had to bite her lower lip to stop herself from arguing.

This isn’t the time to argue. She needed to pay attention just in case, Ulva was trying to create some traps for anyone who wanted to follow her to wherever she was going.

"Relax..." Matthew whispered. "I won’t let them harm you."

"Right," say’s the person that was clinging to her as if he wanted to carry her just to make sure she won’t run away from him. At this point, Ava didn’t know if she would laugh or cry at her current situation.

At one point, she wondered if Matthew was trying to test her magick. Now, she’s wondering if he was doing this to touch her. Or perhaps both?

Was he doing this just to be with her?

Was this some sort of date?

Well... this is one messed-up date!

Soon, the room started vibrating until the table slowly moved to the side, showing what looked like stairs leading down. Ava squinted. Aside from the first three steps, she couldn’t see anything behind the darkness.

"Should I carry you?" Matthew whispered.

"I can— uh— "

"Get on," Matthew said as he lowered his back.

"What are you— "

"It’s safer. I can run faster while you cast your magick."

Ava blinked as she wondered if he was seriously asking her to piggyback. She met his silver eyes and just as she expected it was full of amusement.

"Hurry, she’s going down."

Ava wanted to decline but ended up climbing into his back. She wrapped her arms around his neck as he effortlessly held her close. Then he followed behind Ulva.

"Are you certain she won’t notice us?"

"Yes," Ava said. "I am using my invisibility magick. The only way for her to hear us or notice our presence is if I ran out of magick which... is pretty abundant." The source of Ava’s magick isn’t the nature but her anger. And right now... she was pretty angry about everything.

So yeah... thank Ava’s anger issues, she could pretty much maintain being invisible for more than an hour.

"Somehow that makes me proud," Matthew said.

"Can you stop talking?" she asked. She’s trying to concentrate on Ulva but Matthew’s behavior, his smell, his body, and everything about him was just too distracting.
