Chapter 294: Duty

"What do you mean by... not here?" Ulva’s voice immediately raised when she heard Ava’s words. "How dare a mere witch say that in front of me? Get me, His Highness Matthew! I have some things to discuss with him about the upcoming event!"

"I just told you. Matthew left."

Ulva’s face turned even darker. Did Ava start thinking she’s someone important because of Matthew?

"He left the palace last night. I haven’t seen him since. You can use your magick if you want to." Ava yawned. She’s just woken up and clearly not properly dressed yet. She had spent the night talking with Matthew and now she felt like she could sleep the whole day.

"He left the plane?"

"Probably," Ava said. "He didn’t tell me anything."

For a few seconds, Ulva looked angry. Then she closed her eyes and muttered some spells. Upon realizing that Ava was telling the truth, she got up and glared at her.

"Get dressed! You are coming with me!"

"Where?"

"Where else? To perform your duty."

"Oh..." Ava nodded.

"Why aren’t you moving yet?"

"I was trying to see if you would do some secret magick to hypnotize me," Ava smirked. Then she got up and left Ulva alone in the drawing room.

"Priestess, that woman is really— "

"Calm down Mildred! This is not the time or place!" Ulva was quick to reprimand one of her apprentices. "You have all the time to show her proper magick earlier."

"I understand, Priestess."

After almost an hour, a refreshed Ava walked out of her room with a huge smile on her face. The two witches immediately looked at Ava’s red long A list dress that is clearly out of place for where they were going. Clearly, Ava saw that both women were wearing outdoor clothes with shirts and boots. Why would she wear something like this?

"What are you wearing?" Ulva asked.

"Dress?"

"We are going outside!"

"Oh— Then please wait for me."

"We are not waiting for another hour!"

"It would take me two to get dressed. Knowing that you are waiting for me, I tried my best to— "

"Enough." Ulva interrupted Ava. "Use your magick to change your dress."

"Eh?" Ava blinked at her. "You use magick to change your clothes?"

"You don’t even know this?" Ulva’s apprentice looked surprised.

"I don’t do that," Ava said. "Anyway, I will be very quick."

Of course, Ava purposely took her precious time to change her clothes, reapply her makeup, wear knee-length boots and even braid her hair. Again it almost took her another hour before she got out of the room.

"Oh?" Ava lifted an eyebrow. Ulva was no longer there.

"The Priestess can no longer wait for you. So... she asked me to guide you instead."

"Alright." Ava smiled like a naive child. As an empath, she knew how much this woman hated her. She could sense malice and even killing intent just from the apprentice.

The two of them started walking down the hallway that would lead them to the stairs and then to the main door of the large palace.

"So... what is your name?" Ava asked.

Sadly, the woman looked like she had no interest in talking to Ava. Instead of saying a word, she hastened her steps and even used magick to move away from Ava.

Seeing this, Ava smiled. Then used the same magick to catch up. When the apprentice saw her floating next to her, she harrumphed and increased her speed.

Of course, Ava didn’t hesitate to increase her speed too!

"You really know nothing about etiquette?" the woman said. She stopped and turned towards Ava.

"Etiquette?"

"About new witches, junior witches, head witches, and priestesses."

"Oh... I didn’t have a coven in the past."

"Well let me tell you this. You are not supposed to walk ahead of your senior!"

"Oh... so you are someone older than me?"

"Age had nothing to do with that. It is usually the age that they started practicing witchcraft. We usually do everything based on seniority."

"So the tasks..."

"The newer ones usually do it. The senior ones act as supervisors. So... I will be your supervisor. Meaning, I am your senior and therefore, you are not allowed to even walk next to me."

Ava was speechless. She stared at the woman with brown long hair and wondered if this woman had the chance to leave this place before.

What’s with these rules?

"Do we understand each other?"

"Yes," Ava said.

"Good," the woman had a satisfied smile on her face. "Stay five feet away from me. Do not... and I mean do not approach me at all cost!"

Again, Ava nodded.

Since Ava was bored, she doesn’t mind playing around with the other witches.

Plus, she wanted to use this opportunity to study the things happening inside this palace.

Again, the woman started walking and Ava followed. This time, she made sure to stay away and actually acted like a docile cat following its master.

Obviously, this made the woman satisfied. By now, everyone already heard that Matthew left and therefore, Ava no longer had the backer.

So what if she was sleeping with the prince?

Everyone can be replaced! A younger and more beautiful woman could easily replace Ava’s place!

"We’re here!" the woman’s voice attracted the attention of the other woman who was already in that place. "You— " she pointed at Ava. "You are charged with growing certain flowers for the decoration of the place."

"Alright." Ava nodded. "Where are the — "

"Out of nowhere."

"Huh?" Ava blinked.

"Grow them from the illustrations that I will show you."

"Hold on..." Ava frowned. "You wanted me to grow something out of nothing?"

"Yes. Is there any problem?"

"Of course there is. You can’t possibly think that I could grow something out of thin air, right?" Ava was extremely good at offensive and defensive magick as well as potion making. But she was well aware that she didn’t have any talent for growing plants.

"That is exactly what I wanted you to do." The woman smirked. "And you cannot eat until you finish doing that!"
