"You were very kind," Matthew said when Ava told him what happened to Amore. "Why let her see her child? Wouldn’t it be better if you give her a little hope, and take everything away?"
"I did give her hope."
"It wasn’t enough."
Ava felt like she could never win this discussion again. She looked at both Ulva and the King who was still struggling on the floor. The black smoke was still wrapped around them. Their eyes had already turned white as they trembled. Bubbles spilled from their mouth and into the floor.
Matthew was sitting where the King sat before. He looked towards the window.
"You have questions?"
"In fact, I do," Ava uttered. He already told her about a realm called the Shadow realm. The fact that people from the Shadows can move from body to body still boggles her mind. What would happen if all people from the Shadows decide to move to the Human Realm?
"Are they trying to invade this realm?"
"They have been trying to do that for centuries. This is the most successful one. Someone who survived long enough to actually move to a different body and live in this world for centuries."
"What we overheard back then..."
"They are from the Shadows." He nodded. "And the reason why they survived this long is that they found small planes that don’t follow the laws of the cosmos."
Planes have their own rules. The one who created them can also control them. For instance, they could make a plane without the sun and stars. They could make a plane full of mirrors or diamonds. It was just like that Arena on The Pits. It was a pocket plane which is similar to the plane that the Lycans occupy.
"So they move into different bodies..."
"They have the ability to do that..."
"Then..." What about him? Was he someone from that Realm as well? As if sensing her thoughts, Matthew narrowed at her.
Then he smirked.
"What are you thinking?"
"Not you," Ava answered. "What are you doing to them?"
"I was planning to kill them."
"And if I told you not to?" she asked.
"Then I won’t."
"Really?" she crossed her arms across her chest and lifted an eyebrow. "Even if I don’t offer you an explanation?"
"You don’t owe me one."
For some reason, that only made her suspicious. Why wouldn’t he ask about her reasons? She sighed inwardly.
There really is no winning against this man.
"I want a place to stay." A safe place for Matthew. She was scared that his enemy will find him.
"So you wanted a safe place for me..."
There was a flash and Matthew was already in front of her. Just what is he? She wondered.
How could someone move that fast? How could someone have that smoke? The ability to incapacitate both Ulva and the King was already enough proof that Matthew was not using his Lycan abilities.
She felt his fingers on her chin. She stilled.
Matthew smelled like blood, lots of blood.
He lifted her chin up.
"Are you scared that my enemies will find me?"
"I am not," Ava said. "I seriously like this place."
Again, his brow arched as he offered a bemused smile. He probably know that she was lying. And he thought it was amusing.
"What happened inside that illusion?" he asked.
"Why do you ask?"
"There is something different about you..."
"Nothing is different about me," she slapped his hand away. In response, Matthew folded his arm around her waist and pulled her against him. Her chest slammed against his.
Her eyes widened.
"Did you have any idea what I wanted to do when I heard about that spell?"
Ava pursed her lips. Does it look like she could read his mind? She couldn’t even read his emotions or feel the wolf inside him. To him, Matthew felt like a deep abyss. Too deep, too mysterious.
And she hated that.
She hated the fact that she basically knew nothing about him and his past.
Not that she was interested.
She rolled her eyes inwardly.
"I wanted to destroy this place. But right now, it was the safest for you."
"For us," Ava corrected him. "It’s the safest space for you too."
"So you really are concerned."
"It’s not what you think." She tried to get away from him but felt useless when she realized he wasn’t planning on letting her go any time soon. fɾeewebnoveℓ.co๓
"Still in denial, eh?"
"I am not." Her brows furrowed.
"You look like a cat that was caught stealing food. "
"Shut up." Can they just talk about the King and Ulva? What is going to happen next?
Again, he answered as if he could read her mind.
"I am not going to kill them. You can do what you want. However, I cannot promise, I would do the same to the people who let the wolves in."
"It wasn’t Ulva?"
"I don’t believe in coincidences princess. And it wasn’t a coincidence that the wolves arrive when you are in that state. It was Ulva’s plan but the ones who took advantage of the plan needed to burn."
Ava tried to look away but Matthew once again held her chin.
"What?" she asked. She actually wanted to say that he couldn’t just kill people if he wanted to. That this would only attract more attention.
Ava heard from Mara that Matthew killed most of the rogues. That alone was enough to grab the attention of some people who got some dark motivations like the witch’s council or the Lycan Queen and most especially from the werewolves and other shifters.
Her pupils shook as she stared into his eyes.
Even though she wanted to tell him to be more careful... she couldn’t.
She couldn’t say it.
There was something about the way he looked at her, something that seemed to tell her to trust him.
And as much as she liked to argue with that ’something’, Ava was particularly tired right now.
Her body felt weak.
The fact that she rushed her just after she woke up was definitely a surprise. She could only say that it was her adrenaline spiking.
And now that she had calmed down, she felt that her body is going to collapse soon.
She watched as Matthew’s lips lifted into a smirk. Then he used his hand to cover her eyes.
"Sleep," she heard him say before her consciousness left her.
