"Mr. Caro? From Trillium?" the man who spoke almost dropped the coffee in his hand. He hurried over to his table and cleaned the paper before telling his Beta to take them inside his office.
"Are you certain this is... "
"They are already here! Do you want me to close my doors in— in the middle of the night?" he glanced at the clock behind him. It was almost two in the morning. He had been here as it was his time to guard and he thought he could finish a few pieces of paperwork while his people were checking the area around the pack house and the village.
Who would have thought that someone from Trillium would suddenly visit?
After a while, he heard footsteps approaching his office. He immediately prepared himself to welcome them.
Alpha Ramrin haven’t seen Jude Caro before but Trillium sent an announcement to all shifters all over the world, about the changes and Mr. Caro’s promotion. Then the rumors that Mr. Caro’s family had been taken into custody by Trillium started.
Ramrin had so many things to think about, he had no time to think about other people’s matters. But this doesn’t mean he didn’t know anything about the outside world.
The door opened, revealing his Beta Sammy and four other people. Almost immediately, his gaze landed on the man with silver eyes.
He was the tallest and the one with the strongest presence.
Ramrin immediately walked towards him and held his hand. "Mr. Caro it is nice to finally meet you. I am Ramrin Housey. I lead this pack."
Surprisingly, the man just stared at him with a bland expression on his face.
Did he say something wrong? Ramrin couldn’t help but wonder inwardly.
"I— " Ramrin was about to apologize when the man gestured toward the other man.
"That’s Mr. Caro."
"Oh.... " Ramrin felt his face turn hot. Horrified he looked at Jude and the woman next to him who wasn’t even hiding her giggles. "I— "My apologies. I didn’t mean to— "
"It doesn’t matter." Jude cooly said.
"Ehem..." Ramrin cleared his throat. He awkwardly looked at his Beta. "Would you like some coffee or tea?"
"No. We are in a hurry. We will be leaving after we are done."
"Then please take a seat..." he gestured towards the black leather couch not far away from his office table. "May I know what brings the head of— "
"The rogues..." Jude interrupted his words. "We want to know everything that you have on them."
"I— " Alpha Ramrin couldn’t help but feel emotional when he heard Jude’s words. "We have been sending emails to the larger packs asking for their help but they refuse to do anything without an increase in... fees. We are both lacking in resources. So instead of begging them, we are doing our best to guard our small pack. Sammy... please give me the files that we have from the vault."
The man who accompanied them nodded and left the room.
"The Rogues had been a threat to all of us for years. However, we have never seen any attacks as deadly as this..." Alpha Ramrin walked towards his table, gathered a few folders, and handed them to Jude and the rest.
"This is the latest cases around the area. So far, we have a total of three missing kids and two adult women. We are doing our best in tracking them but it felt like they just... disappeared."
"Werewolves have very good senses..." Francheska said. "When you said they disappeared, do you mean, their scents vanished as well?"
Alpha Ramrin nodded at the question.
"One of the children just seemed to vanish in her room. The others were playing outside in broad daylight. The women disappeared while doing some other simple things during the day. We have been looking for them but we couldn’t find any traces or proof that they were taken."
"So, you are suspecting that it wasn’t just the rogues that took them?" Ava asked.
"Yes." As if on cue, the Beta named Sammy walked in with more folders. "We think it had something to do with witches."
"And I believe this is the reason why you didn’t want to work with Chairman Tanik?"
As expected, the Alpha’s face turned ugly at Ava’s question.
"Have you seen his village?" Alpha Ramrin asked. "They have more than ten witches! They have a strong priestess that kept them safe from abductions. Then they offered to take our children and weaker women. This makes one wonder if they knew about it all along."
Ava looked at Matthew who was standing not far away from them. Matthew never said a word and just followed them around as they visit packs, asking about the missing children. While she knew that Matthew was pissed, she didn’t know why.
She couldn’t help but wonder if he was pissed because Ava dragged him here. Was he tired? Maybe he just wanted to rest inside the cabin?
But... they are here to deal with the rogues. Even Matthew chose this place because of the population of the supernaturals nearby.
It should be noted that supernaturals don’t just occupy a country or a place because they want to. They have to consider a lot of things that would mainly affect their secrets.
Mostly, they would choose a remote place with fewer people to establish their pack houses. This would lower the case of humans walking in on them and their supernatural world.
Nova Scotia is just one of the places that supernaturals frequent not just because of its population but because of its weather. Nova Scotia has an abundance of snow days meaning, fewer tourists and fewer people. Aside from this, there is a small population living in the place, meaning the economy can be a bit sluggish and people are bound to move away to find better opportunities.
Ava looked at the Alpha.
"So... you are thinking that Chairman Tanik and the rest might be responsible for the kidnapping?" Francheska asked.
"We do not have any evidence but then again, we also do not have any evidence that says they didn’t do it," Sammy answered. "Either way, it is better to be safe and be sorry. In our village, not one of us agreed to let them take our children and women. However, some other villages did it as they thought it would protect them from whoever it is that is taking the children."
"What about the bigger packs? What did they say about this matter?" Ava couldn’t help but ask.
"Well— " Sammy looked at Alpha Ramrin.
"Tell them, Sammy..."
"They didn’t directly say it but we believe that they were also thinking that it was Chairman Tanik and the witches who took the children."
"Why would they take the children?’ Ava continued asking.
"We do not know. But witches are witches. They sacrifice people to attain their goals. Plus... there are rumors lately." Alpha Ramrin said.
"What rumors?"
"It was rumored that the witches were able to create their barrier because of the shifters."
"That is a strange rumor," Francheska muttered.
"That village accepts anyone. All of them were people who lost purpose in their lives. They even accept rogues and people that have been kicked out by their families. These are people that— " Alpha Ramrin shrugged. "I mean no one really cares about if they went missing."
"Are you accusing them of sacrificing their own people to create the barrier?" Jude couldn’t help but ask.
"As I said, these are just rumors."
"Hm?" Ava suddenly got up and looked towards the door. She frowned.
"What is it?" Alpha Ramrin asked.
"I sensed something— " Before she could finish her words, Matthew was already standing next to her. "You do not have witches in your pack, right?"
"Right," Alpha Ramrin nodded. "We do not accept witches and— "
"Shhhh...." She looked at Matthew then she muttered. "West..."
With that, Ava’s figure turned blurry until she disappeared inside the room.
"What the— "
"What the hell was — "
"Hey, where are you going?" Alpha Ramrin asked when Matthew went to the door.
"West..." Matthew said.
....
The room was dark yet Ava could clearly see the figure standing by the bed. It was wearing a cloak, and a thick sinister aura seeped out of the figure’s body. It honestly felt like she was watching smoke endlessly coming out of the figure’s six feet frame.
A thick smell of burnt flesh surrounded them.
Ava thought the figure didn’t notice her arrival as it didn’t move but she was wrong.
Suddenly, the figure turned towards her.
Because of the hood, Ava couldn’t see the facial features but for some reason, she felt like she was staring into a deep abyss that was threatening to swallow her alive.
She took a step back.
"Get away from the bed," Ava said.
The figure said nothing. It continued staring at her. Then it moved, its body slowly turning blurry. Seeing this, Ava held her palm towards the figure.
"Stay..." she said. Surprisingly, a surprised gasp came out from the figure. Then there was a loud AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.
The sound was so sharp, Ava was forced to cover her ears.
The next thing she knew, the figure was already gone.
