Chapter 37: Tortured

When she was sure that the man was no longer on the premises of her house, she examined the envelope’s contents. On it, was an embossed sign of the moon. It reminded her of the identification that Trillium provided her when she became one of them.

When she opened the envelope, a small black card was tucked inside.

On it was her name and the words, ’we will be waiting.’ It was crafted in an elegant handwriting that reminded her of the older texts that she read in Egypt.

She glanced at the part of the forest where the man disappeared before she sighed and went inside the house. Actually, she never thought of putting any restrictions outside the house before because this place is nearer to the general public. Moreover, her mother was too kind and generous to humans.

Putting a spell that would harm them would be something against Gabriella’s principles.

Thinking about it now, she had been too lenient about everything including her own protection. She thought of what Matthew said about these people.

’A month, huh.’

The cold atmosphere inside the house made her shiver. She quickly lit some fire and made herself some tea from the herbs that Gabriella had dried when she was still alive.

Watching the fire cackle in the fireplace, Ava fell into a deep stupor. The silence inside the house was deafening, yet the absence of other people’s emotions was a paradise for someone like her. Now that she thought about it, living alone, away from people and shifters sounded quite good.

As she continued staring at the fire, she thought of what Matthew and Drigo said. To be honest, she appreciated the fact that Matthew tried to protect her from the Lycans. But lying about mates?

Was that the best thing he could do in his attempt to keep her there?

She thought about what he promised her.

Protection.

He said he was going to protect her from the enemies that wanted her life. But this wasn’t the real reason why she agreed to work with him.

The real reason why she did it is because of Gabriella. The man promised to give her the information that she lacked about the case. And while she didn’t like what he gave her, this didn’t mean that she would just stop their cooperation and....

Ava’s expression changed when she felt her gaze turned hazy. It was as if something was blocking her view. She glanced at her tea, the frown on her face deepened.

Just as she was about to reach out for the drink, her gaze turned blurry.

’Fuck!’ she thought inwardly before she fell back onto the couch. She thought she heard some footsteps approach her before her consciousness left her.

.....

Ava woke up inside a dark room. She tried to move her limbs and quickly realized she was tied. Tightly at that. The cloth that covered her mouth, made her realize that whoever took her, knew that she was a witch.

She closed her eyes and tried to extend her senses.

She couldn’t.

Iron.

She was surrounded by iron walls!

Even the chair she was strapped on was made with pure iron!

She examined her body and immediately felt grateful when she couldn’t feel any pain. Aside from her hand that was tied behind the chair, she didn’t feel anything uncomfortable somewhere. She was still dressed, even her shoes were still there.

After calming herself, she quickly thought of ways to get out of this room.

First, she needed to find a way to get out of this room. Magick wouldn’t work inside a room made of iron.

Damn.

Whoever made this place knows how to deal with witches.

The realization made her pause.

Slowly, her calm heart started racing inside her chest. What are the odds that this was the same man who took her mother?

No. The MO didn’t make sense.

*creakkkkk*

The sound of the door opening was followed by the sudden assault of light from... a flashlight? She couldn’t be sure.

"Awake?" It was the voice of a man. It thundered inside the room, making her flinch. She snapped her eyes shut, her senses on high alert as she moved her hand. She successfully moved it but she wouldn’t be able to use it to cast any magick.

The man knew how to tie women!

"No need to hurt yourself. Your magick won’t work inside this room." The man said. "I made sure of that." Gloating laced his tone. While she couldn’t see his face, she was almost sure the man was smirking.

The man’s emotions suddenly filled the room.

Lust.

Happiness.

Pride.

Arrogance.

"There’s no light in this room. No windows either," the man added. "So no need to stress yourself. You will die from suffocation before... you could even try to remove the iron cables on your hand." He chuckled.

And before she knew it, she could already feel him standing in front of her. Ava’s eyes snapped open. Her heartbeat accelerated...

"Don’t worry... it will be your turn soon." The man’s voice was deep and somehow familiar. She knew she had met him before.

But the darkness and the presence of iron was practically making her blind.

She struggled to break free.

It was futile.

Then she heard the man let out a low chuckle.

"Still energetic? It looks like the potion didn’t work."

She held her breath when she saw something glint in the middle of the dark. An... iron knife. Almost immediately her expression changed.

"I heard that some witches have the ability to heal themselves." The man lowered himself. Ava grimaced when she felt the man’s hot and foul breath against her face. She wanted to curse, but the cloth covering her mouth was preventing her from saying a thing.

"Of course, I am well aware of that. So... I had this knife specially made for your kind... Don’t worry... it’s not sharp."

Before she could react, the knife scraped her left arm. She hissed.

"Since the potion isn’t enough to weaken you... then blood loss will." The man said before stabbing her shoulder. The sound of the blunt object slicing her flesh open was deafening. And while she promised herself not to show any emotion to this man... she just couldn’t stop herself.

She grunted, the sound of pain escaped her covered mouth.

Damn it.

She will surely torture this man to death!
