Chapter 42: Doing it Bare

"What is this place?" Ava looked around the pristine white lobby in front of her. She had just walked out of the elevator that took them twenty floors under the mansion.

Slowly, her eyes widened at the experimental large glass tubes. In one of the tubes was a small werewolf in its werewolf form. It was standing inside the tube full of bluish liquid.

"This..."

"This is where we do most of our experiments in the US. We have branches in Europe and Asia." Matthew said.

"Is this... legal?"

"To the human world? No. But Lycans and werewolves..." he paused and looked at one of the tubes that had a bear or at least something that looked like a bear in it. "Shifters in general would have long vanished if we didn’t know how to adjust to the evolving technology."

"You mean..."

"We have been studying our own evolution. Thanks to that, we were able to develop medicines that helped shifters... give birth and cure for more specific diseases."

"I thought Lycan’s didn’t get sick?" In general she thought Were’s and Lycan’s don’t get sick. The legends about these creatures made it sound like they were these super strong creatures who enslaved witches and didn’t get old.

"We do." He gave her a meaningful gaze. "We intend to keep it a secret for as long as we can."

"But you are telling me now..."

"You have the right to know."

She pursed her lips. The man just told her a secret. A secret that most witches and people from Trillium don’t know. She didn’t know if she should be thankful or feel burdened by knowing the truth.

The deeper Matthew led her, the more she realized that she knew nothing about the Lycans’ world. Even while she was working with Trillium, she hadn’t heard of this information. Not from Samuel, not from other members whom she had met before.

Matthew was quick to tell her that the information was strictly available to Lycan’s alone. And the rumors about them were also spread by Lycans to protect their very own existence.

"Lycans have always been mysterious." Ava said as she observed the other tubes with various creatures inside them.

"While we are doing our best to stay hidden, there are just things that we one cannot hide."

"Like what?"

"The existence of our mates."

She tensed at that.

"Witches are aware that a Lycan... without his or her mate would go berserk in their wolf form." She could feel Matthew’s intense gaze towards her. She wanted to look at him, but his words reminded her of the kiss and once again, sent her tumbling down the abyss.

She focused her gaze at the bat-like creature in the tube. Should she start counting one to a thousand to avoid thinking about fucking him against these tubes?

Jesus.

"Aren’t you scared to talk about these things in this place?"

"Scared?" he sounded amused. "This is my house. My laboratory. That and I sent everyone away."

Her gaze snapped towards him.

"Why would you send them away?"

"So we can have the whole floor. Just the two of us."

She could feel him getting closer behind her and she had to fight with everything she got to stop herself from turning around. The thought that it was just the two of them on this whole floor, surrounded by bluish white light and glasses was stripping away her restraint.

She stilled when she felt his hand on her neck. She had to curse herself for wearing her hair in a ponytail. She should have covered her neck— or covered her whole body for that matter.

This man was tampering with her sanity.

But she was hell bent on getting her answers.

"So... what do you want to show me?" she asked.

"The man who took you, had shifters fighting for him."

"I saw it," she gulped and was thankful at the change of topic. But his fingers on her neck didn’t move. Instead, he started tracing small circles at her nape.

"They are shifters but not shifters at the same time."

"You mean..." Her breath turned shallow when she felt him against her back. He was not hiding the erection that was pressing against her spine. Her nipples pebbled.

"The blood... was the same as the blood that was on that note. It took us a while to examine it because... we thought we made a mistake. The blood was that of a human and... an animal."

Before she could say anything, he held her hand that was about to touch a tube and turned her around then pulled her towards him in one swift motion. His hand secured her waist as he held her tightly against him. She let out a surprise gasp.

"What are you doing?" she asked.

"What do you think?"

"We can’t... "

"We can’t, what?" His face was so close to hers, she could see his long eyelashes. "What Ava?"

"This is a lab... In front of these creatures..." her breathing hitched. She was wet. The thought that she wanted him to tie her up against one of these tubes and fxck her until her legs shook was too much for her brain to take.

She was someone who liked vanilla, missionary. She liked it boring.

Or didn’t she?

"Precisely. Which is why you shouldn’t touch anything... without protective gloves on."

Hot blood rushed to her face. She lowered her gaze and wished she could dig a hole somewhere and just bury herself from the embarrassment.

Is there anything more embarrassing than this?

"Now... shall we go ahead and put protective gloves on... before we start touching things?"

Her mind spiraled. She couldn’t help it. Why did he have to make it sound so fucking dirty?

Irritated, she snapped. "Why do we have to put gloves on? Do we really need one?"

"Oh?"

Before he could use his sexy mouth to entice her and leave her hanging again, she added.

"I prefer it bare."
