However, just as he started touching her waist. A doorbell sound reverberated inside the office. He blinked and the intimate bubble they shared immediately burst.
Her, on the other hand, felt like she had just jumped off a freezing lake, totally drenched but too damn cold to continue what they had started.
She heard him mutter a curse.
But before he could say anything, her eyes were already glued to the pieces of paper that had fallen onto the floor. Her eyes narrowed, her expression grew colder.
"What is that?" she asked, ignoring the fact that her hair and clothes were a mess.
"Files of the shifters... the bodies that we found. The humans who were turned into shifters?"
She could feel his eyes on her as she started picking up the pieces of paper around them.
"Ex navy, ex military, ex cop." The backgrounds of everyone, the humans who became shifters were almost all the same. All of them had a decent background in fighting.
"They disappeared while on duty, some of them were presumed dead." He said.
"But most of them... were declared missing after running away from a mental facility."
He helped her with the papers and handed her the rest.
"Yes."
Her frown deepened. All of them were just like Phil. Ex military, tall, good fighter. They had families too. Meaning, whoever took them didn’t care if someone would try and look for them.
"Give me everything about the culprit," she said as she realized that her clothes were still a mess. A tinge of red appeared on her skin as she fixed her hair and her lace that was peeking out on her chest.
Without saying anything, Matthew approached the laptop in front of them and showed her the screen.
"His name is Romeo Mclary. Forty two. He is the elder son of the Priestess of the Coven of the Silver Flame," he said.
"Isn’t that— "
"The largest coven in North America. They have branches everywhere but their main one was in New Orleans."
She pursed her lips. Gabriella used to be a member of a smaller branch in Alaska. But the Coven kicked her out after she started telling them that a witch will be killed soon. They thought she was a lunatic and no one actually believed her.
But what if...
"Her mother, Amore Mclary is eighty this year. She’s a powerful witch with connections in both politics and the shifter world." Matthew continued. "I suspect she was the one responsible for hiding all the information about the killings, the evidence. Her connections might have reached Trillium."
Hearing his words, Ava started to pant. Samuel’s words echoed inside her head.
He knew.
Samuel knew about the person who killed her mother.
He knew that Trillium could not be trusted anymore.
So, he sent her to the Lycans before Trillium could do something to her.
"Are you alright?" Matthew’s concern brought her back from her stupor. She stared at him before her eyes grew weary, tired. She sighed, exhaustion enveloped her like a damn blanket.
Silver Flames...
She remembered the name.
She hated them for kicking Gabriella out.
Somehow, her gaze landed on his swollen lips.
"I’m tired," she whispered and he nodded without saying anything.
To her surprise, he suddenly got up and carried her like a princess. A squeal escaped her lips.
"What— " ƒгeewёbnovel.com
"Shhh... rest." That silenced her. She stopped talking, instead, she rested her head on his shoulder and closed her eyes.
In the middle of this complicated web of facts, there was Matthew.
The man is an enigma.
A witch’s mate— something that should never have existed in the first place.
"Your brother personally invited me..." she muttered in a low voice.
"Drigo," he growled.
"He didn’t hurt me or touch me." She was quick to say when she noticed the man’s anger reaching her. While not much is known about Lycan’s , everyone knew that werewolves were naturally possessive of their mates. They are overprotective, jealous and brutal in bed.
Fuck.
Why can’t she stop thinking about him in bed— or anywhere for that matter— with her.
"He won’t bother you anymore," Matthew uttered.
"Did you hurt him?"
"I didn’t kill him."
Well... that was a pretty good answer. The man looked and even felt important. She couldn’t imagine what would happen if Matthew would kill her own brother.
"A Lycan and a witch..." she uttered. "It will be complicated."
He stopped walking and looked at her.
"It will be." His luscious lips were primed into a straight line. "But I won’t let them get to you."
She smiled. She couldn’t imagine the upcoming storm that was going to happen because of them. But a part of her wanted to believe his words.
"I’ve heard... from the rumors that... " she gulped. "Lycans become... stronger once they mark their mates. Is that true?"
She watched as his eyes turned to slits, golden slits.
"It is."
She blinked, her heart just fucking skipped a beat.
"Are you sure it will work with a witch?" she playfully lifted an eyebrow.
Almost immediately, a side smirk hung on his face.
"Why don’t we try and see?"
Before she could say a word, he laughed.
"You should have seen your face," he said.
"Stop teasing me." She knew she was blushing like a teenager in front of her crush. But can he really blame her? This man... had been teasing her since she woke up!
Matthew shrugged.
"I am not... marking you, yet. Not unless I am sure that... it won’t kill you."
She pursed her lips.
Or him.
Not unless they are sure that the magick inside her body won’t kill him.
"Rest," Matthew said. "I will introduce you to another witch when you wake up."
"Another Elizabeth?"
He shook his head. "Jealous?"
"Fuck you."
Another chuckle escaped his lips, its timbre so low it ricocheted to her spine.
"It’s a witch that should be able to give us answers. About the mating... " He turned at her, his silver eyes darkening. "And the marking."
