Chapter 45: Baba The Witch

The sound of birds welcomed Ava and Matthew as they stepped towards the small hut. Surrounded by trees and large bushes, the house looked abandoned from afar. However, she knew that this was nothing but an illusion created by the protective spells around the house.

To a normal human, the hut was nothing but a destroyed house. Without its roof, it did not even seem to be very tempting to spend the night in this place.

"Don’t move," Ava held Matthew’s arms.

"Why?"

"You know why," she harrumphed.

He chuckled. "I knew you would save me."

"Bullshit." fɾēewebnσveℓ.com

"I know about the spells but— "

"You don’t know magick so you can’t undo it. I know." One needed a good witch to be able to create a safe pathway that would avoid the traps that the witch living in the hut created to protect herself.

She pursed her lips and did some hand signals.

"Follow me," she uttered.

"Woah."

She could hear amusement in his voice, his heart was swelling with pride.

"Just who is living in this place?" she asked. The traps were practically everywhere. While it would only make a normal human dizzy, it could be deadly to other witches and shifters.

Ava had never seen anyone who could create traps like this.

"You will meet her soon enough." Matthew’s voice echoed behind her. Almost immediately, her face darkened. She turned around and just as she expected, she couldn’t see Matthew anymore. Behind her was a thick fog.

She closed her eyes. Soon, the fog enveloped her.

Damnit.

She immediately unleashed a spell that would protect her.

And then she felt herself falling.

"THUD"

She grunted when she felt her body hit the floor.

"Ava!" Matthew immediately helped her up. "Are you alright?"

She nodded, her eyes already roaming around. Reddish brick walls welcomed her.

"You are lucky... without your protection spell. You would have died. The fog is actually poison."

Ava turned and found a small old woman sitting by the fire. She stared at Ava through her thick round glasses before turning her attention back to what she was sewing.

"For someone so young, you are surprisingly powerful."

"Baba..."

"Stop calling me that." The woman snapped.

In response, Matthew chuckled and approached the woman. Then he leaned and kissed the woman’s forehead.

"What do you want?" the woman asked.

Matthew ignored the woman’s glare. Instead, he turned towards Ava and gestured for her to come closer.

"Baba... this is Ava. Ava... this is Baba, the woman who took care of me since I was an infant."

"I started taking care of you before you were even born, Nicholas Matthew Graydon."

"Don’t call me that."

"Then stop calling me Baba. I am no longer that woman."

Matthew sighed and held onto Ava’s hand.

And while she could have pulled her hand away, she didn’t. Instead, she looked at the woman expecting to see some sort of anger in her eyes.

"Who is this?" Baba lifted an eyebrow.

"My mate."

Surprise quickly registered in the woman’s face. Then she abruptly got up and approached Ava.

"A witch?"

"Yes." Matthew confidently answered.

Hearing this, a different warmth floated in Ava’s chest. For some reason, her calmness disappeared as her heart started racing. Was she nervous?

The answer was yes.

Damnit.

She was actually scared to know what the woman thought of her.

It felt like she was actually meeting Matthew’s mother.

Wait...

Now that she thought about it, she wasn’t actually this nervous when her ex, Broody introduced her to his parents. But now... she could actually feel herself shaking.

Was it because... she couldn’t feel any sort of emotion from the woman?

She knew the woman was powerful but... to be able to block her unconsciously was just a different kind of powerful. Right now, Ava wasn’t sure if she would survive if she fought this woman who was a foot shorter than her!

"And you are here because you want to know how it happened?" Baba said after spending a few minutes staring at her.

"Yes."

Without warning, the woman grabbed Ava’s other hand.

"Witches don’t have mates." Baba uttered, her brown eyes shone as she stared at Ava’s palms. "Or so everyone thought."

"What are you— "

"Grab the candles Matthew. Follow me."

The woman flicked her finger and just like that their surroundings changed. It was as if they were transported to a large library. She looked at Matthew who seemed too calm.

Clearly, this wasn’t the first time he saw something like this.

Matthew got himself some candles and followed Baba towards the tall shelves, so tall she couldn’t seem to see the top. Of course, this was partly because of the darkness around them.

"Where are we?" she asked.

"A thousand meters below the ground," Baba answered. "This is the best way to preserve the books." She continued walking and turned left before turning right again. Soon, Ava lost count of how long they had been walking and turning.

That was until they reached a pulpit with a large book.

"God, didn’t create shifters and witches." Baba said. She stopped walking just a few steps away from the book.

She gulped.

She had wondered who created them. She had tried to ask Gabriella about it but even her mother knew nothing.

"It was the angels." Baba uttered. "They needed a body, powerful enough to become their avatar. So... they shared their essence to humans. The Lycans had been familiar with this for the longest time." Baba turned at her. She didn’t hide the disgust in her face.

"The witches... however stopped sharing the truth a long time ago. They couldn’t accept the fact that our magick was but a small flicker of an angels essence. They wanted to be more..."

Baba continued, "Of course, we are not here to talk about the past. We are here to talk about... the first witch and the first Lycan."

Ava felt her throat constrict at her words.

As if sensing her thoughts, Matthew held her hand tighter. As if he was hoping it would somehow alleviate her anxiety.

Then she felt Baba’s sharp gaze on her.

"We are here to talk about the reason why... the first Witch... killed the first Lycan."
