Chapter 46: The Lycan and the Witch

Centuries ago, in an effort to keep the Lycan from gaining more power, the witch did not let him mark her.

Despite them— the first witch and the first Lycan— being mates. She refused to let him mark her. She didn’t want the Lycan to be more powerful than her, she didn’t want him to boss her around and change her life.

In anger, the Lycan marked a human.

And in fit of jealousy, the witch fought against the Lycan. Giving him a curse. This curse became the source of other were’s and shifters.

Ava blinked at the woman’s story.

For some reason, she felt a little unsatisfied. When she heard the woman tell her about some mysterious past that the witches tried to hide, she thought of something magical, enticing.

Not a fucking jealous woman who cursed everyone because of her own doing! Of course, the fault also rested on the Lycan’s shoulders. After all, he was equally responsible for what happened.

He already had a mate.

Why cheat?

"I can see you scowling young lady," Baba uttered. "If you thought it was an embarrassment then congratulations! By now, you already know the reasons why witches tried to hide their own history."

Baba was still standing just a few feet away from the book. Despite the sarcasm in her voice, her eyes never left the candle that was placed on top of the book. Ava turned her attention to the candle as she tried to change her expression.

There’s just a lot of things that she doesn’t know simply because she never wanted to practice for the longest time. Nor was she interested in knowing more about being a witch. When she started working for Trillium, she put her whole attention into fighting shifters who broke the rules. She used her abilities to subdue both witches and shifters.

Even the magick that she knew was mostly combat spells.

"Now... it was not recorded but there were some older witches and Lycans who spoke about... the witch dying after she cursed the Lycan. The first Lycan followed shortly.

Baba finally turned towards them, her eyes narrowed.

"Before the witch died... she left a prophecy. Prophecies to be more exact."

Again, she waved her hand and now, pulpit stones appeared, surrounding the large, old book. There were six stones and she quickly realized that she couldn’t read the symbols that were on them.

"For hundreds of years, the Lycans have studied the symbols. And for hundreds of years, we failed to understand it. So, we concluded that the prophecy wasn’t meant to be understood."

She approached one of the stones.

"And we were right. The symbols... changed a couple of days ago. Revealing the first prophecy."

Ava and Matthew approached and almost immediately, their faces changed. Matthew’s hand tightened against hers as their eyes met.

"As soon as the moon turns red, a kiss shall mark the reunion of enemies."

"We couldn’t understand. The blood moon never happened that night." She lifted her head and looked at them. "You two... were reunited that night. Weren’t you?"

Before they could answer, the woman took a step back.

"Don’t tell anyone about this matter."

"What?" Ava asked. "I thought— "

Baba shook her head.

"No. We don’t want to know."

"What does it mean, Baba?"

"Don’t tell anyone about this matter. Do you understand, Matthew?"

He pursed his lips and nodded.

"But can we really hide it? Matthew’s wolf..."

"Is under control." Matthew interrupted her. "And yes, we can hide it. If it means keeping you safe."

"What safe?" Safe what what? From who?

"If the Lycans knew that the future king of Lycan’s mate is a witch what do you think would happen?" Baba asked her. But she wasn’t paying attention to the rest of her words. Her mind stopped working when she heard ’future king of Lycans.’

"You are the— "

"I never wanted to." Matthew said. "Nor will I want it in the future."

She blinked. If the other Lycans— the ones who knew about what happened a long long time ago between the first witch and the first Lycan— knew that their King’s mate is actually a witch, they would surely try to do everything to stop them. After all, a crazy witch who wasn’t marked by her Lycan was basically the reason why their bites can only make a werewolf and not other Lycans.

If one would think about it, the reason why Lycan’s were outnumbered by other shifters is because of their curse.

"What about marking her?"

Baba looked at Matthew.

"You may do as you please. Though, I would advise you to do it away from everyone else. Just to be safe." Baba gave Ava a nonchalant look. "It would be best to do it as early as possible. Before the others will notice that something is wrong between the two of you."

"What do you mean by, to be safe?" Matthew asked. "Is it going to harm her?"

Baba pursed her lips.

"I’m afraid I don’t have an answer Matthew. This is the first time I’ve seen or heard of something like this."

"So, there is a possibility it would hurt her?"

Ava squeezed Matthew’s hand when she felt his anger. Her earlier prediction was right. Matthew’s wolf was not under his control. The tint of gold in his once silver eyes was enough proof of that.

Seeing this, Baba gasped, her eyes widened.

"Your wolf..."

"Answer my question Baba. Is it going to hurt her?" Matthew growled.

"Nicholas Matthew, don’t you dare use that tone on me!" Baba frowned. Then she waved his hand and in the next instant Matthew disappeared.

"Where is— "

"He is safe." Baba squinted at her. "His wolf is dying to mark you."

"I know."

"Did you feel it?"

Ava nodded.

"But Matthew is hesitant to do it. He wanted to make sure it wouldn’t hurt you." Baba started walking towards the large book. "Tell me what happened."

Slowly, Ava told Baba about what happened when that man took her. How Matthew’s eyes turned gold and how she was able to calm him down before he could transform into his wolf form.

Baba’s expression turned colder.

"If Matthew is hesitant to mark you then... I suggest you maintain your distance. To prevent his wolf from coming out."

Bullshit.

Ava wanted to curse.

"It’s either that... or you let his wolf mark you. Without knowing if it would hurt the magick flowing in your veins."

"What would happen if— "

"You might lose your magick."

"Is that possible?" Ava asked. How could someone lose something that was coursing in their blood since they were born?

"It could be."

"What would happen if he doesn’t mark me?"

"His wolf would come out and cause carnage until you let it mark you. If you refuse then... it can just wait for another strong Lycan or a strong witch to kill it. Silver bullets weaken them but it wouldn’t kill them. The only way... is to..."

"I know." Ava gulped, her expression cold. "I know how to kill a Lycan wolf."

Baba stared at her.

"It is up to you now. Matthew... would never hurt you. It’s his nature. But the wolf might be different. It’s an animal. It would want to claim you, own you, mark you. It’s their instinct."

Ava nodded.

"I will send you out," Baba said. "And oh... Ava?"

Ava looked at the older woman.

"The first witch’s name... Not many people knew it but...The name’s Eva."

Before she could say anything, Baba waved her hand like earlier and Ava’s surroundings changed.
