Chapter 53: The Lycan and the Lunatic

For the first time in months Ava wondered what she would feel if she met the woman who was practically Gabriella’s best friend— the same woman who abandoned her mother the moment she needed help.

Amore Mclary.

The name still makes her seethe with anger and rage.

It still makes her recall the past

And she hated it.

Amore Mclary should be in her eighties or nineties.

However, the woman before her looked forty. Or maybe even late thirties.

Amore Mclary was wearing a long burgundy dress, different beads adorned her neck. She walked towards them in a languid manner.

Her face never left Matthew’s while totally ignoring Ava’s existence.

"When Lycans visit... they usually announce it ahead of time." She took a seat on the chair opposite them. Her face was devoid of any expression.

Ava frowned when she couldn’t feel anything from the woman.

She started to wonder if Amore was wearing some sort of talisman that could block empaths.

Was it just a coincidence?

"I am here for your son..." Matthew said without even greeting the woman. "But you already know that... don’t you?"

Ava who was standing behind Matthew could feel the man’s raw anger. And it looked like he was not planning to hide it from the other witches inside the mansion. The two witches standing behind Amore immediately frowned.

"I don’t understand... Have you met my Romeo in the past?"

Matthew squinted.

"I would like to talk to your son.’

"No." Amore answered almost immediately. "My son is still grieving his wife’s death. He is not available to talk to you."

Matthew pursed his lips. Before he could say a word, Amore finally looked at Ava.

"I don’t understand why you would drag a Lycan in my home, Miss Woods. But I do not appreciate it. I knew you were not in the right mind when I first met you. But I never expected you to actually involve my own son in your problems."

Ava lifted an eyebrow. Seeing this, Amore added.

"Please leave my son alone."

Ava drew in a slow, steady breath. As much as she wanted to cut this woman, she couldn’t. At least not now. Luckily, Matthew was quick to help her.

"Amore. I didn’t come here just because of the killings. And you probably know that too." Matthew intervened. "And please don’t talk to Miss Woods like that."

"I can talk to her the way I want to Mr. Graydon."

The atmosphere froze. An invisible electricity flickered between Amore and Matthew. Watching this, Ava couldn’t help but feel a little complicated.

She knew Amore was using some sort of magic to try and influence their heads. It was subtle and almost unnoticeable. In fact, a normal witch would have probably missed it. By now, a normal witch would have lost his or her hate towards Amore and would treat her like a goddess.

This wasn’t really a spell.

It was more like... a natural talent.

It was a gift.

"We want to talk to your son." Ava said.

"For the last time, don’t act like your late mother and listen to my words. My son is not available right now."

The mention of her mother seemed to trigger something inside Ava. ƒrēewebnoѵёl.cσm

"Was it because of what he did to me?" she asked.

"Pardon me?" Amore asked.

"I was kidnapped not too long ago. And we found out that your son secretly owned the place that I was held at."

"And?" Amore lifted her eyebrow. "Does that automatically tell you that it was him who kidnapped you?"

Ava snorted.

"Are you really going to try and defend your son?"

"Every mother would defend their son. Especially if their son... is innocent."

"Romeo is not innocent!"

"Then do you have proof?" Amore was quick to point out the only thing that they lack. A real proof that’s not circumstantial.

"Then let us talk to him."

Amore snorted. "Why would I let my son talk to a Lycan and a lunatic like you? My son is human. Did you really think I would give you the opportunity to hurt him?"

Amore suddenly got up.

"I believe I have already made myself clear. You are not going to see my son. Now please excuse me. I still have things to attend to."

"I know he killed Gabriella." Ava’s words stopped Amore from moving.

"I know it was because of the dreams. Gabriella saw ... the ones that Gabriella saw were not shifters. They were altered. Humans who were turned into shifters. And when she informed you... you made it look like she was crazy. You rallied everyone against her and kicked her out of the coven, leaving her alone and vulnerable."

"I did no such thing!" Amore hissed. Almost immediately, the lights from the chandelier flickered.

"Then you had her killed." Ava continued. She walked towards Amore. She was surprised when she felt Matthew’s presence behind her. However, her surprise quickly vanished as she met Amore’s dark brown eyes. "You knew that her dreams could expose you... and your altered humans. So you had her killed."

"How dare you accuse the priestess?" One of the witches behind Amore hissed. This witch was none other than Ester. The witch who gave them a not so warm welcome earlier.

Ava snorted.

"Does it make you sleep at night, Amore?" Ava asked. "Knowing that your son... is a killer?"

"You— "

"Gabriella, my mother, treated you like a friend. A sister even." A vein on Ava’s temples pulsed as her pulse started speeding. This time, the light on the chandelier flickered before one of its bulbs cracked.

The other witches looked at Ava. Horror apparent in their faces.

"What do you think you’re doing?" Amore uttered calmly. "Are you really going to do something as careless as this inside another witch’s house? As expected, Gabriella will be very disappointed in you."

Heat flushed through Ava’s body.

This time, the chandelier didn’t flicker. Instead... it moved.

Slowly, it swayed. Left and right...

"Ava... I believe we need a proper conversation."

The world seemed to narrow in on her when she heard Jude’s voice. She looked at the door and recognized the man walking towards them.

It was Jude.

And Ava didn’t have a good feeling about his arrival.
