Chapter 60: Changes

Current Time. Reality.

"So... they all lost their consciousness after the marking?"Ava gobbled the sandwich. According to Matthew, she had been sleeping for two days. Two whole days without food and her stomach was rumbling.

Matthew nodded.

"And... some of them died?" she lifted an eyebrow.

"Usually weaker humans die. Yes."

"And this was not included in the books that I read."

"Yes."

"Why?" She started munching on another sandwich. Matthew insisted on giving her some healthier options. But she liked her sandwich. She would never choose any food just because it was elegant, something she couldn’t even pronounce, over her bacons and cheese.

"The elders chose to remove it."

"That’s stupid."

"What’s stupid is you... asking me to mark you."

She smirked. "But you did. Didn’t you?"

His eyes smoldered.

"I dreamt of you."

This made her stop chewing.

"What kind of dream?" she asked. When she was dream walking into other people’s dreams, they wouldn’t be able to see her, notice her or feel her.

"In bed. Together."

"What were we doing in bed?" she asked, curious. Did he feel it? Did he feel her?

Instead of responding, Matthew leaned closer. *I could demonstrate...*

Her palm covered his face before he could complete his words.

"Don’t say it. No need for demonstrations."

He tilted his head, his eyes peeking through her fingers.

"I didn’t say anything yet?"

"Never mind." She retracted her hand and started assaulting her sandwich. The reminder of her dream made her cheeks hot. It would be embarrassing to accept that even in her dreams, the man made her come.

*In my dream, you looked real. You felt real. It was weird.* he said.

She just snorted but said nothing. However, she was really curious if the marking had affected her magick. Was it possible that the magick that she could barely control changed because of what happened?

Sadly, she couldn’t find anything about it in Matthew’s library.

"What’s so weird about dreaming about someone?"

Then she paused and looked at Matthew.

"I didn’t say that," Matthew said. *It wasn’t. But everything about that dream is different. Was it because you are my mate?*

Ava’s eyes widened.

Matthew’s lips didn’t move!

"You— " It was as if a rock was lodged in her throat. "Think of something!"

"Huh?"

"Just something, anything."

"I want to— "

"Don’t say it." She held a hand in front of his face. "Just think about it. Don’t say it."

He stared at her, wondering what she was up to. *I was thinking about undressing you and— *

"Did you think about... undressing me?" Ava’s heart raced against her chest. Her palms started sweating in anticipation.

"Can you read my mind?"

"Can’t you read mine?" Ava asked however, Matthew shook his head in response.

"Was it the mating?’

"It should be," Ava confirmed. "We need to talk to Baba." If she could read his mind then it meant her empath gift might have been amplified. This could also mean that her magick had gotten stronger!

It was the exact opposite of what Baba told them.

To her surprise, Matthew shook his head.

"We need to keep this a secret."

"Why? I thought you could trust her?"

"Did you see the rocks? The one that lit up?" he asked in return.

She nodded.

"What about it?"

"Our lives are already chaotic as they are. It’s best that we keep this between us for now. I don’t want Baba coming in here and perform some experiments on us."

"Are you saying this isn’t normal? I thought Lycan’s grew stronger after marking their mates?"

"It’s normal for Lycans. But this is the first time it has happened to a witch."

Ava pursed her lips. Then she sighed. Matthew was right. They needed to keep this a secret. At least for now. Ava knew that they couldn’t keep this as a secret forever. All this talk was making her hungrier.

"So, is there a way that you can block me? Like not let me read your thoughts all the time or something." she asked. Listening to his thoughts would be very distracting. He lifted an eyebrow in response.

"You don’t want to listen to my thoughts?"

For some reason, his remark made her blush.

"Its private." She was content in knowing what he felt. But his thoughts? No. That’s just a big no.

Seeing her reaction, he laughed.

"Of course. There is a way to do that."

"Then do it."

"Yes, Ma’am."

Again, his words reminded her of the dream. Did she actually agree to call him Sir in that dream? Her cheeks burned.

"What about the Silver Flames?" she asked, trying to get her mind out of her magick and that dream.

"They left."

"Romeo did?"

He nodded.

"Why did you stop me from killing him?" Matthew never answered her question that night. The thought of her magick going out of control because of her rage still filled her head. She shivered inwardly.

Without Matthew, she would have destroyed everyone in her path that night. Without Matthew, she would have ended up dead. Or maybe a fugitive hunted by both shifters and witches.

"Didn’t you feel it?" Matthew asked.

"Feel what?"

His face turned serious.

"Another powerful witch was there."

She frowned and he continued.

"A shaman."

He eyes widened. "There was a Shaman in that mansion?"

"It wasn’t there when we arrived but yes. A shaman was there, waiting for you to do something."

She lowered her head, her gaze turned complicated. The emotions that she felt that night slowly made their way into her chest. However, unlike before, they weren’t bursting with controllable heat.

This time, they were calmer.

Don’t get her wrong.

She was still angry.

Being reminded by Jude and Trillium’s betrayal was still making her angry. But unlike before, she felt more clear headed.

She closed her eyes and felt her magick inside her veins.

Just like before, it was warm and comforting. But something was different about its comfort this time. She couldn’t particularly pin point the difference but she could feel it. She could sense it.

"By the way... your sister in law called while you were unconscious. Ten missed calls. She sent a bunch of texts too."

Ava immediately checked her phone that was placed just on her bedside table.

And Matthew was right.

Marylis had called her ten times and sent her seven texts.

Seeing her last message, Ava frowned. Then she immediately dialed her sister in law’s number.
