Chapter 70: Dating with Marriage in Mind

"I will take care of it." This was Matthew’s answer when Ava told him about what Almeru said.

Ava lifted her head away from the steam of her hot coffee. She had been thinking of Almeru’s words since the man left her house earlier.

Ava smiled at him.. "Of course."

"You don’t believe me?"

"I do." Ava said. Her conversation with Almeru made her realize that she doesn’t understand anything about Lycan politics. And to be honest, she didn’t want to get involved in a mess like this.

A part of her felt like she needed to know something, that this was her right. Yet the other part was nagging her, telling her to stay in her lane.

She was not Matthew’s lover.

She was his mate.

Something that fate decided.

They didn’t exactly love each other.

Hell, they didn’t even know if the attraction would soon dwindle down.

Once that happens, at least Ava would still have the dignity to leave.

The thought of leaving suddenly changed her mood. She lowered her gaze as her heart thumped loudly against her chest.

It must be the sex, she thought.

Yes. That must be it.

This was because her body craved Matthew’s.

Humans change and she refused to believe that this attraction would stay with them in the next few days or months.

Again, her heart clawed against her chest. She immediately took a sip of her coffee as she tried to hide the ugly expression on her face.

"What’s wrong?" Matthew asked.

She lifted an eyebrow.

"Nothing."

Next thing she knew Matthew was already crouching in front of her. She leaned back, surprised at his concern clouded his gaze.

"What— what are you doing?" she asked, flustered. Her body was definitely reacting to his presence. She cursed inwardly as she was reminded of their attraction.

"Are you hurt?"

"What? Of course not!" Why would she be... "Are you suspecting that I might get hurt because of the marking?"

Matthew’s eyes turned complicated before he answered. "I was worried, yes."

"Well... I’m completely fine."

"Are you certain?"

"A hundred percent sure."

Without warning, he placed his palm on her head. Her body froze, small little electricity skittered through her skin. What the hell?

Isn’t this reaction... a little exaggerated?

"You don’t look too well... though your temperature is normal."

"Yes, Matthew I am very normal." She gave an awkward laugh. "Thank you very much."

Was this reaction still normal? The two of them had slept together, fucked each other more than she had fucked Broody in the past. Still, her body was acting weird around him.

His silver gray eyes found hers.

She tried to hold his gaze but quickly gave up. She suddenly got up. "I need coffee. Do you need— "

Before she could finish her sentence, Matthew pulled her back on the couch. He was holding her wrist. He was staring intently at her.

"What’s bothering you?" he asked.

"Hm?"

"I can smell it Ava," he hissed.

"Ha, welcome to my world." She tried to push his hand away but was powerless against his brute strength. "What are you doing?" she frowned.

"Does it scare you?"

"What?" What’s he talking about?

"The Lycans... are you scared of us?"

"Matthew... "

"I sense fear and anger and confusion, on you Ava," he hissed.

His words surprised her. She was feeling scared? Of what?

"No. I don’t think so." Once again, she tried to shake his hand off. But he was far stronger than her, way stronger.

"Then what?" his silver orbs shook. And she immediately knew what he was thinking.

"God Matthew... let me go. I am not scared of the Lycans."

He said nothing.

"Alright..." Ava sighed. "I am not leaving."

Matthew was scared that she would leave. Can he be more melodramatic than this? Was this his wolf talking?

"I won’t leave." He reiterated when he didn’t move or showed any signs of moving anytime soon. "Fuck Matthew can you just— hmmm— "

His lips prevented her from saying the rest of the words that she was about to say.

His kiss was fierce, forceful. And despite all the logical side of her brain that was kindly explaining why participating in a kiss instead of a conversation would only make things messier, her body betrayed her.

She kissed him back.

Soon their tongues tangled, fighting for dominance.

When Matthew stopped the kiss, Ava felt like she had not breathed air for so long. She panted.

"Apologies..." Despite saying this, he didn’t move. Nor did he let her hand go. "You are right. We should talk about it."

Speechless she stared at him.

Yes. She was about to talk. But he stopped her with his lips.

This man...

Was he suffering from some disorder in the head?

She cleared her throat.

"Right... conversation. Communication is best to solve misunderstandings."

THe tilted his head, a smirk appearing on his face.

"Then? Are you willing to tell me what you were thinking?"

"Well..." she cleared her throat again. She was lucky that Matthew couldn’t really read her mind. But the fact that he could feel her emotion was really troublesome. So, she decided to be honest.

"You see... I don’t know if I am your lover or just your mate."

Saying those words felt so exhausting and refreshing at the same time. She could have denied it, bottled it all up. But the thought of it is already making her uncomfortable.

"And this is because of what Almeru said?" he probed.

"Yes." It was true. She had started wondering about this after talking to that man.

"So... you are wondering if the bond would disappear?"

"That too... yes." He nodded.

"One... the bond won’t disappear."

"Oh..."

"And two... I want you to become my woman."

"Like..."

He chuckled. "Like a girlfriend. Then a wife. Then the mother of my— "

"Whoa..." That was a little advanced.

"You see?" He smiled. "I only date with marriage in mind."

"So... if I agree... what are we?"

"Aside from mates?"

She nodded.

"It’s dating with the thought of marriage."

That made her laugh out loud.

Crazy son of a bitch.

She thought.
