Ava squinted at the shifter. The buzzing sound around her intensified along with the scorn on their faces.
"Do you have evidence?"
"Joseph from the research department is in the infirmary."
"Joseph?"
"Yes. Please follow us to avoid attracting the attention of other people."
"Shouldn’t you get my superior’s attention if you want to talk to me?"
"I— "
"Well... Mr. Graydon is still in a meeting." The other responded. freewebnσvel.cøm
"But you can still inform him, right?"
"Well, I don’t know why you think you matter more than his meeting Miss Woods but I suggest you just follow us to the HR peacefully."
"Peacefully..." Ava’s lips twitched. The way these people pronounced the word peacefully irked her. "Alright... since you want a good show... then let me give you one."
"You— "
"Lead the way," Ava said.
The two guards snorted before they led her to the third floor where the HR office was located.
In there, Ava was surprised to see two more men in suits that she didn’t recognize. Judging from the way the two of them sat next to the head of the HR office, the two of them looked like someone important. Ava rummaged her memory as she tried to recall the names on the files that Marko gave her.
Those names were of the people that she needed to know.
For instance, the name of the Head of the HR department was there as well as the name of the head of each department. Even their assistants were there too.
Ah.
Right.
One of the men should be the assistant manager of the research department. While the other... well she didn’t know. Meaning... he was not important.
"Miss Woods... please take a seat." The head of the HR Mrs. Fouy uttered. She had a calm expression and even a slight smile on her wizened face.
And she...
She’s human.
Ava complied and looked at the other people in front of her. They made the room look like this is a court and she was talking to the jury. There was a single seat next to Ava and across her were about ten different people.
"It has come to attention that you hurt another employee... Joseph from the Research department was taken to the infirmary just a few minutes after he met you."
"I heard." Ava nodded. She wondered where this was going.
"Well, he sustained some injuries and— "
"Mrs. Fouy... Joseph is a six-foot-three-man. Did you think I could hurt a man like that without sustaining some injuries myself?" Ava interrupted her.
"Please don’t be so defensive, Miss Woods. We are just trying to establish facts here."
"Ah... facts." Ava snorted. "Please continue establishing your facts."
"Good. So, the man sustained seven broken bones. Both of his wrists were broken, three of his ribs, his jawbone, and nose." Mrs. Fouy said. "So, I want to know what happened when you met the man?"
"Nothing. He asked me to give a file to Mr. Henny from the fifth floor." Ava uttered.
"Miss Woods... the fifth floor is under renovation."
"I did not know this until the elevator door opened to a dark hallway."
"So, you are saying that you left Joseph without any injuries?" the man from the research department spoke.
"Yes." Ava crossed her hand across her chest.
"But you have no witness..." the man continued.
"How about the CCTV?" Ava asked.
"We already checked the CCTV and we weren’t surprised that every time you passed by, the CCTV would have distorted images."
"Ah... what?"
"Distorted images... "
"Like in spy movies?" Ava snorted. What is this? Mission impossible?
"Precisely like spies." The man answered.
"So, you are saying I am a spy?"
"Those are your words, Miss Woods. Not ours. But corporate spies do exist. Especially from... the companies owned by witches."
"Ah..." Ava pursed her lips.
"Ah?" The man asked. "Is that all you have to say?"
"Well... you don’t exactly have evidence of me beating him, right?"
"What are you trying to say?"
"All I’m saying is... you have no proof against me. So you have no choice but to believe what I tell you." Are these people stupid? No. Their motives must be different.
They are not here to establish that she’s some sort of a spy. If they wanted to frame her, they would have done something more... complicated.
But really?
A scheme like this?
"I would suggest that we investigate the matter. A suspension should be— "
"You are suspending me on the first day?" Unbelievable? What about her salary? She’s supposed to be this strong independent woman who could earn some money for herself.
"That would happen since— "
"Why not just aske Joseph?"
"We already did. The poor man couldn’t speak."
"I can ask him." Ava volunteered.
"Miss Woods, I don’t know if this is really your first time in a company like this but... it doesn’t work that way. You should stay away from him. In the meantime, we will help him file a restriction..."
"Alright. I think that’s enough." Ava said.
"Excuse me?"
"Call Mr. Graydon," Ava said. "Or Mr. Calida."
"Miss Woods I don’t think we can just call the head of the company because of— "
"Call them," Ava said. "Or I am out of here."
"Then... we won’t have any choice but to fire you."
"So... I just need to prove that I didn’t hurt him, yes?" Ava asked.
Mrs. Fouy nodded.
"Then... I will just ask him. What’s all this fuss?"
"Miss Woods I just said that is not allowed!"
"Then are you going to suspend me just because of this nonsense? I didn’t hurt him. I don’t just hurt people out of— "
"Shifters..." the other man finally spoke. "Joseph isn’t just some people. He is a shifter. Which... you happen to hate."
"Pardon me?"
The man shifted towards Ava. "As someone who used to work for Trillium... you have fought against shifters all over the world, no?"
Ava blinked. Marko told her that they kept her records a secret. She blinked again as understanding hit her.
So... someone leaked her records.
