The village chief drove the group back to the wooden house. As soon as they entered, Nan Xi came out from the kitchen to greet them.
"You're back. Please sit down. Dinner is ready, I'll bring it out for you right away."
All six of them were somewhat unaccustomed to Nan Xi's sudden attentiveness.
Seeing that no one responded, Chu Yang, not wanting the atmosphere to become awkward, said politely:
"Sister, you've worked hard. Let me help you set the table."
"No need. You're tired from fishing. Come sit on the sofa and rest for a while. Dinner will be served soon."
Nan Xi brought out five dishes and a soup from the kitchen and placed them neatly on the long table.
During the meal, seeing that all six people were focused on eating and hadn't said a word, she took the initiative to warm things up by saying:
"Isn't fishing in the reservoir fun? I want to go next time too."
"Sister, the reservoir doesn't release water every day, so you can't just go whenever you want."
Chu Yang was starving, chewing his cheeks vigorously, and managed to reply to her in a moment of leisure.
Nan Xi lowered her eyes and said with feigned regret:
"It's all because I'm not feeling well and can't go help everyone. Fortunately, we caught so many fish this time, so I can go to the market to sell them tomorrow."
The sounds of eating at the long table seemed to have stopped.
Chu Yang felt a chill run straight up from his tailbone to his head. He pitifully gave Jiang Hexi a wink, but Jiang Hexi acted as if she didn't recognize him and continued eating her rice.
The scene was too cold; he couldn't handle it!
"Um... Sister Nanxi, apart from the fifteen fish we kept, all the other fish from the reservoir were given away to online friends through lucky draws."
Nan Xi's smile froze on her face, cracking inch by inch. She tried to salvage the situation by asking, "Are there enough fish in the reservoir to go around?"
Chu Yang: "With over 100,000 people watching the live stream online, how can those few fish from the reservoir be enough to go around?"
Nan Xi took it upon herself to please the netizens, saying, "We still have more than a dozen fish left. We can't finish them all anyway. Since the netizens are so enthusiastic, why don't we put a few more fish into the lucky bags and give them away in a lucky draw?"
Chu Yang buried his face in the bowl, feeling like crying but having no tears left. "A person who only eats rice has no soul to eat rice," he thought, "let whoever wants to take that line, it's none of my business anyway."
Yan Jie put down his chopsticks first, stood up and said, "I'm full, you can continue eating."
"I'm full, I'm going back to my room to rest."
"I have to get up early tomorrow, you guys continue chatting, I'll excuse myself for a moment."
Shen Yingyu, Xie Wanyi, Jiang Hexi, and Yu Xiangwan left the table one after another, leaving only Chu Yang and Nan Xi sitting face to face, staring at a table full of leftovers.
Chu Yang quickly finished the last two bites of rice and took his leave before Nan Xi could speak:
"Sister, take your time eating. I'm going to take a shower now."
Nan Xi was so angry that her nails dug into her palms, but she still had to put on a magnanimous act in front of the camera and swallow the food in her mouth one bite at a time.
[Where did this Siberian cold front come from? It's so cold.]
Every time Nanxi opened her mouth to speak, I saw a flock of crows fly past in a great swarm.
Nan Xi had heated up the food and was waiting for everyone to come back so they could eat together. Not only did they not say a word of thanks, but why were they ostracizing her like this?
[If I hadn't watched the whole live stream, just seeing Nan Xi's aggrieved little expression, I would have believed what the person upstairs said—that she brought this all on herself.]
[Neither Xi Mei nor Wan Wan dared to decide to give the fish away, but Nan Xi wanted to put the reservoir fish into a lucky bag. Did she really think she caught the fish herself? Not a single thing she said was pleasing. How could anyone like someone like that?]
[Please have pity on Little White Poplar; this place is so cold it scared him so much he ran away!]
The next morning, the village chief came to lead the people to work in the fields, and Director Chen stepped forward at the opportune moment and asked:
When do you plan to clean and send the fish to your online friends?
"Does this fish need to be killed?"
Jiang Hexi said, utterly puzzled, "Why go through all this trouble? Just freeze them, pack them up, and send them by express delivery."
Director Chen was so angry that his beard trembled slightly. "If you don't bleed the fish, I feel sorry for the netizens."
Jiang Hexi didn't believe him and turned to ask Yu Xiangwan:
"Wanwan, isn't this fish cooked without any blood?"
"fishy."
Yu Xiangwan's words made Jiang Hexi behave.
Director Chen declared, "If you insist on not killing the fish, the production team will refuse to bear all the logistics costs, and you will have to pay the express delivery fee yourself."
Seeing that the director had gone this far, Nan Xi retorted firmly:
"We girls will stay behind to clean the fish, so you don't need to worry about it."
The village chief was in a hurry to get to work in the fields, so he urged four men to get in the car and drove off in a whirlwind.
Jiang Hexi and Yu Xiangwan exchanged a glance, both of them extremely annoyed by Nan Xi.
Nan Xi made the decision without asking their opinions, presumptuously.
Who says women have to stay home and clean fish while men have to work in the fields? They're clearly experts at driving tractors, and plowing and sowing are no problem for them at all!
The three men, holding a cutting board and a kitchen knife, stood in front of the fishing box.
Jiang Hexi and Yu Xiang were still haunted by the memory of killing fish last night, and hesitated to start.
Seeing this, Nanxi picked up the net and was about to be the first to go up and catch fish.
She picked and chose in the fishing box and finally caught a two-pound grass carp. Before she could put it on the cutting board, the grass carp splashed water all over her, scaring her so much that she screamed and threw down the landing net, retreating far away to the side.
"It's filthy, quickly get me some tissues to wipe my face."
She snapped at her assistant off-camera, and when she realized the live stream camera was on her, she immediately put on a frightened expression and said:
"I've never killed a fish before, I was really scared just now."
