Chapter 4 The Sound of the Copper Basin

Jiang Hexi pulled his fisherman's hat up high and said with pride, "That's right, don't you know who we are?"

Before noon, the land, exposed to the scorching sun, had already cracked with fine lines.

Yan Jie and Shen Yingyu were called back by the village chief before they could finish cultivating the two plots of land.

The two men, their T-shirts soaked with sweat, stood under the shade of a tree, panting slightly. After splashing water on their heads, they gulped down a large bottle of mineral water before they finally felt a little better.

The village chief drove them back in the tricycle, cursing incessantly.

"What's the use of driving a tractor so well if you get up so late? You still haven't finished plowing two plots of land. We have to be in the fields by six o'clock tomorrow morning. If we don't hurry, how will we plant when it rains?!"

“Hey,” Jiang Hexi interrupted the village chief’s rant, changing the subject, “Village chief, isn’t this the road we came by? Aren’t we going back?”

"Go back? What are you talking about? You still have a mountain of chickens to feed!"

The village chief turned the handlebars all the way and sped up to take them to the free-range chicken farm.

Cameras had already been set up under the banyan tree, waiting for them to come and do a live broadcast.

As soon as Jiang Hexi got out of the car, Sister Zhou, who looked after the chicken farm, stuffed a copper basin and a rolling pin into her arms:

"Why are you so late? Hurry up and collect the chickens, or the sun will get too strong and you won't be able to collect the eggs on the mountain!"

"Sister-in-law, are you going to bang on the basin to collect the chickens?"

"Yes, yes, hurry up, or it will be too late."

Jiang Hexi was driven to the foot of the mountain. Looking up at the free-range chickens covering the mountainside, she suddenly sighed:

"This is the first free-range chicken farm we've taken over. Should we have an opening ceremony before we officially start collecting the chickens?"

"What ceremony?" Yu Xiangwan asked.

"For example, the opening ceremony with gongs and drums, and lion dance celebrations."

Jiang Hexi glanced at the sun overhead, his eyes narrowing with a miserly squinty look: "This is called a good start. I'm counting on this chicken farm to make my fortune."

“That’s a great idea,” Chu Yang responded enthusiastically. “I’m the drummer in the band, sis, you can bang the basin for me.”

Jiang Hexi handed him the copper basin and rolling pin. After exchanging a glance, she yelled towards the mountain:

"A single clang in the copper basin brings a fortune!"

"Clang clang clang clang—! Time to collect the chickens!!" Chu Yang banged on the copper basin, his shouts echoing through the air.

If they hadn't shouted or knocked, it wouldn't have mattered. After a series of knocks, all the chickens on the hilltop flapped their wings and flew over their heads in a huge swarm!
