Risk Taking
"Don't be nervous. After we pass the next level, we will be team members in the future." Morse, who was following behind Mu Xiao, suddenly stepped forward and held the female insect's thin shoulders, like a senior comforting a nervous junior.
Mu Xiao understood Morse's hint and put his backhand on his shoulder, mimicking his fake smile with narrowed eyes. He thought to himself, "Let's get bombed together. Don't try to hide away." The Toad security guards behind him looked at each other in confusion: "Aren't there male and female Zerg? I just feel like there's something odd about these two."
Before they could think too much, a dazzling white light flashed by. Mu Xiao subconsciously lowered his head, and then a roar that shook his eardrums was heard. The hot and surging air wave lifted him up and slammed him against the wall. Suddenly, he felt a sharp pain and blood gushed out of his mouth.
He gritted his teeth and crawled forward among the flying dust and debris. As luck would have it, half of the wall collapsed instantly after the explosion and fell to the ground. The blow weighed heavily on his back and lower limbs. The breath in his throat was almost strangled and he fainted.
When he opened his eyes again, he saw a pure white ceiling. Mu Xiao tried to check his surroundings, but his body seemed to be broken and reshaped, causing him to break out in a sweat due to the pain. He tilted his head and saw Morse lying half-dead on the hospital bed. He felt much better and raised his middle finger tremblingly, making the other person so angry that his heart rate soared.
Logically speaking, the female insect's body recovers faster, and three days in a convalescent cabin is enough. However, the toads and insects have different body mechanisms and use different medical methods, so they don't need a convalescent cabin at all, and it took a week to recover.
During this period, he was not idle. He kept comforting Alred, who was about to lose control of his emotions, and made up a bunch of outrageous reasons. He promised to go back in a few days and replenish his energy every day after returning. Only then would the male insect give up.
The day he and Morse were discharged from the hospital, they were greeted by a strange toad. Compared to the other toads, this one was more fully evolved, except for a patch of yellow-green skin covered with bumps behind its ears.
"My name is Fess, the person in charge of the base." Fess looked at the two bugs in the back seat through the rearview mirror while driving, and his tone could be described as gentle.
If Mu Xiao hadn't looked at him in the mirror, Feis's eyes would have been stuck to him like glue. This stickiness was not out of liking him, but out of greed for prey, as if he would chew him up and swallow him in the next second.
Instantly, the skin behind the toad's ear flashed in his mind. He connected the two and guessed that the toad's evolution level might be improved by eating insects. Then the disappearance of male insects in the underground city might be a transaction between the insect personnel within the Zerg agency and the toad tribe. If the guess is correct, what is the purpose of this transaction?
"Get off." They arrived at the base in a short while. Mu Xiao's thoughts were interrupted by Morse. He sighed slowly. There were too many doubts. He could only keep getting inside the Toad Organization to have a chance to know the truth.
Fess led him into an office on the first floor where two toads were sitting. When they saw the bug coming in, they glanced at it briefly and then lowered their heads to continue with their own work. Fess briefly explained the work content to him, which was simply unimportant clerical work.
The working hours are still from 10 am to 5 pm. I sit in front of the computer all day and type a few words. I feel like I have entered retirement life early. However, the only disadvantage is that this laboratory has one day off a week. It is usually closed and you need to be searched when entering and leaving.
As usual, Mu Xiao went to the tea room to pour coffee during lunch break. Just as he was about to push open the half-closed door, he heard the sound of chatting from inside. It seemed to be the other two clerks. He silently withdrew his hand, his intuition telling him that there was something important.
"The male insects on the second floor seem a bit restless lately. Do you think any of them will escape?"
"Come on, let's not even talk about whether we can escape from the second floor. Just that small body of his will kill him with a few punches."
"Oh, never mind. What are we going to eat tonight? I really..."
Mu Xiao heard the footsteps getting closer and closer to him, so he took a few steps back and pretended to have just arrived. Regardless of any reaction from the two toads, he squeezed directly into the tea room between the two toads standing shoulder to shoulder. Sure enough, they immediately diverted their attention and even cursed a few times.
"What are you thinking about?" Morse saw Mu Xiao standing in front of the coffee machine absent-mindedly, not even noticing that the cup was not aligned, so he asked curiously. The female insect looked at him for a while, and then her eyes brightened. He took a sip of water and regretted being too talkative.
Mu Xiao leaned over to Morse's ear and told him the impromptu plan. The male insect's pupils immediately trembled, and the smile on his lips disappeared. After a long while, he said, "It's possible, but it's too dangerous. You haven't completed our deal yet. Are you seeking death so early?"
"Danger is the least of my worries for someone of my status. I know my limits, trust me." He stared firmly at the hesitant insect in front of him, his dark green pupils glowing brightly like the first rays of dawn on the lakeside.
Morse still failed to convince him in the end. As a partner, I can only wish him success. I should have known not to choose such a stubborn person as my partner.
Mu Xiao took four days off, citing illness. He returned to the staff dormitory and opened his terminal to receive a package of genetic modification agents from Morse. There was also a voice message. He clicked on it and said, "This agent has only been used to temporarily transform other species into male insects. I'm not sure what effect it would have on female insects."
There were many unknown possibilities waiting to be dealt with, and I suddenly felt a lot of pressure. Not only did I have to knock out the toad that was delivering food to the second floor and disguise it as a male insect trying to escape, but I also had to make sure that this potion would be effective. Everything was a gamble.
He glanced at the active status of Alred's terminal, wondering whether to apply for a video call, when his terminal suddenly flashed a prompt light with the message "Dear Lord" incoming call request.
The corner of Mu Xiao's mouth twitched. Who made this comment so corny? He almost got goosebumps all over the floor. He pretended to be indifferent and swiped the word "agree". When the exquisite and graceful comment was magnified by the floating screen, he could not hide his joy.
"What's wrong? I..."
"Have you eaten? Have you been wronged? Are you still not taking care of your body... Did you miss me for the last time?" The male insect lowered his eyelashes and asked a long series of questions in one breath, not giving him a chance to interrupt. He only raised his eyes after asking the last question. Only Mu Xiao was reflected in his pigeon-blood gem-like pupils.
Mu Xiao ignored all the previous questions, covered his heart with one hand and replied, "I miss you very much."
After doing this, he was disgusted by the grease and felt that it was completely harassing the male insects. But when he looked at the thin red tips of the insects' ears, wow, there were actually swarms of insects.
"I might be busy in the next few days and won't have time to talk on the phone at night." Mu Xiao added in a depressing tone, and suddenly felt like the scumbag was about to run away.
