Chapter 5 Escape Three
The wind stirred up a small cloud of dust as his toes touched the ground. He steadied himself from his half-kneeling position and immediately stood up. With a graceful turn, he faced the wall and opened his arms towards Feng Shier.
Her once-tied black hair had mostly fallen loose during her escape, making her look somewhat disheveled, but her bright eyes held a gentle smile.
The crimson moonlight from the demon realm pierced through the alley wall, shining directly on the person smiling at him. Instead of blurring the figure, it made his presence even clearer, as if…
What did it seem like? Feng Twelve couldn't figure it out, when he heard his boss call out to him, "Twelve! Don't be afraid! Jump down and I'll catch you!"
Su Yu waited expectantly for him to jump down into her arms, so she would have a legitimate reason to hold the child.
Feng Shier felt as if he had lost his mind. Despite growing up in the Demon Realm where trust was scarce, he hadn't considered what strength this child, who was at most two years older than him, had to catch him. He simply stared at the person whose eyes seemed to glow, and in a moment of impulsiveness, he jumped down.
With a loud "bang," as expected, although Su Yu caught Feng Twelve, she was still knocked to the ground by the impact due to her frail body.
"Ouch—", Su Yu hugged Feng Twelve tightly, feeling a sharp pain in his back, and grimaced for a while. In order not to ruin his image as a reliable boss, he pressed Feng Twelve's head down with one hand so that he wouldn't look up and see his disheveled appearance, and patted his back with the other hand to comfort him.
No, this Feng Twelve looks thin and small, but he just didn't use his spiritual energy, yet he still couldn't hold on steadily?
Damn it, the Demon Realm is full of demonic energy, he should conserve his spiritual power.
However, although Feng Shier was a bit thin, the warmth of the child in his arms felt like a budding seedling of hope.
Su Yu was secretly feeling bitter and depressed, but also happy. However, the little devil in her arms still sensed something and asked worriedly, "Boss, are you alright? Is Twelve too heavy?"
“How could that be? I thought you were too light. I just lost my balance.” Su Yu replied decisively.
Feng Shier seemed to believe him. He slowly climbed out of Su Yu's arms, then reached out to Su Yu for help to stand up, and asked, "Boss, where do we go now?"
"Let's get out of the city first, we can talk about the rest later. By the way, Twelve, do you know anyone in the city?"
Feng Shier shook his head and said, "Almost all the demons in the area where I used to live were captured and sold as slaves."
“Then let’s leave the city first,” Su Yu decided decisively. “The merchant guild will find a way to replenish the goods. We’re likely to be arrested again in the city.”
Seeing Feng Twelve nod obediently, Su Yu glanced at the scene of various skill attacks flying around on the other side of the wall, and heard the sounds of reinforcements coming from other directions, as well as the calls of other ordinary demons to kill the monsters and pick up the scraps. She had Xiao Qi scan the surrounding map, chose the direction with the least noise, and then grabbed Feng Twelve's hand and started running.
Feng Shier followed Su Yu's pace, glanced at the silver ring on Su Yu's finger, and lowered his eyes to hide the flickering emotion in them.
Wait a little longer; it would be very difficult for a demon to escape from a city under tight security.
Or they could wait for reinforcements from the other side's forces. Before taking the child away, they would probably give this harmless demon child some benefits. Demon-human cultivators sometimes acquire treasures from other races during their training. Although they can't use them themselves, they will keep them for future exchanges.
With the help of the map provided by the system, Su Yu could always lead Feng Twelve to hide in a corner before encountering crowds. However, Lady Luck wasn't particularly kind to them, and occasionally they would run into a few demons because they had nowhere to hide.
"Hey! Kid over there! Come here!"
The demon, who seemed to be the squad leader, shouted to the human and demon walking by the roadside.
Su Yu sighed inwardly and stopped. She had already sped up when she noticed that the group of demons had been watching them for quite a while, but she still couldn't dodge them.
Pretending to scratch his face, he used the dirt on his hands to smear his face even more obscured, then told Feng Twelve to wait for him in the same spot for a while. The child, as always, nodded quietly to indicate that he understood. Only then did Su Yu turn around with a look of panic and fear on her face, and jogged to the front of the line.
"Gentlemen, what brings you here to see me?"
The squad leader was holding a portrait, which the merchant guild had made for them to use in the wanted posters. It was going to be hung on the notice board on the city gate wall later.
If they encounter a child of similar age while delivering the painting and conducting a search, they should compare the painting to the child's. The city lord said he couldn't sense any spiritual energy anymore, so the child might have a treasure that can conceal their aura. Be wary of demons with weak demonic energy. If the child doesn't match, that's fine, but this child might become a reserve force to fill their shortage of slaves.
After all, some families prefer to raise their children themselves from a young age.
Su Yu glanced curiously at the painting, his expression stiffening slightly. This city was truly poor. Even the powerful city lord's mansion couldn't afford a recording stone, let alone a decent painter. The person in the painting, while not exactly like him, was completely unrelated and rather abstract.
The demons, as expected, didn't recognize him. They glanced at him casually and exchanged a few whispered words. Su Yu overheard them saying that he probably wasn't a human cultivator.
Because they lived at the bottom of society and had never seen humans or the paintings they held, they even thought that humans looked strange.
It's clearly the demons who look stranger.
Just as I breathed a sigh of relief, I saw another group of demons approaching from the front, with a large cage leading behind them, containing the slaves they had captured.
He shouted over here, "Give those two kids to us! We're short of slave cubs."
Upon hearing this, Su Yu roughly sensed the magic power levels of the two teams' members. The highest level was late Foundation Establishment, which he should be able to control with his abilities.
Perhaps because of his transmigration, his sea of consciousness is much broader than that of a typical Qi Refining stage cultivator, and it is now comparable to that of a Golden Core peak cultivator.
A fleeting purple glint flashed in his eyes.
The two groups of demons paused briefly during their conversation, then ignored Su Yu and Feng Twelve and walked away as if nothing had happened.
Su Yu grabbed Feng Shier and ran away.
When they reached the city gate, the guards, yawning and clutching their weapons, paid no attention. The demonic energy emanating from the two children was so obvious; they couldn't possibly be human. The orders from above only stated martial law, not a city lockdown.
He glanced at the guys who were clearly demons and realized they were different from those in the painting, then waved them away to hurry up and leave, instead of wasting time blocking the door.
He couldn't possibly mistake such an obvious human among the demons!
The gatekeeper thought to himself with great confidence.
He was completely oblivious to the demon child who ran away right under his nose.
