It turned out that Wang Yao had heard the mournful cries of birds on the bridge. Seeing that the fairy maiden left as if she hadn't heard anything, he couldn't suppress his curiosity and went up to the island to take a look.
After crossing the small bridge that stretched all the way to the island, Wang Yao frowned deeply. Along the cobblestone path on the island, trees of various graceful shapes were planted on both sides.
These trees are not very tall, most of them are about the same height as Wang Yao, but their branches spread out and their trunks are strong and curved, forming various graceful shapes. Most importantly, there are birdcages hanging on the branches, and colorful little birds are kept in the cages.
Wang Yao recognized some of them as parrots and thrushes from the human world. He wasn't very knowledgeable about birds and couldn't distinguish which world most of them belonged to.
Most of the birds were on the verge of death, lying in their cages with their eyes closed. If it weren't for the slight rise and fall of their small chests, Wang Yao would have almost thought they were all dead.
A few birds were still fluttering in their cages, their feathers flying everywhere. The mournful cries were coming from these birds. Wang Yao guessed that after the ghost that managed the place left, it hadn't been fed for several days, and the birds were starving.
He looked around but didn't know where to find birdseed. Even if he found some, he didn't know which birds should eat which food. After a slight hesitation, he simply went up and opened all the cages. Some birds immediately flapped their wings and flew out, while others remained in their cages, seemingly lost in thought.
Even those that were already starving to death lay motionless in their cages. Wang Yao felt a pang of sadness, but then he thought of the garden's name, "The Garden of a Hundred Beasts," and realized that it contained far more than just the birds on this island; countless other animals were starving elsewhere.
With that thought in mind, he no longer cared about the dying birds. He hurriedly turned around and went to other islands along the small bridge. On this trip, he found that some islands still had large birds such as cranes and ibises kept in cages. He found the cages and released them all.
Now he had something to keep him busy. He went to each small island, and each island had some birds and beasts kept in captivity. He didn't bother to distinguish them and just released them all. Some of the carnivorous beasts were so hungry that they wanted to find some fresh food when they saw Wang Yao.
Unfortunately, Wang Yao had trapped himself as a "good guy," and no matter how the wild beasts pounced, scratched, and bit, they couldn't get a single bite of his flesh. Instead, he was surrounded by a large group of carnivores, including wolves, foxes, wild dogs, and leopards, some of which he knew and some he didn't.
They were fighting and bickering among themselves, making a ruckus as if they were Wang Yao's followers.
He darted from one small island to another, busy with his work, and had long since lost track of where the fairy had gone. Before him lay another small island that resembled a grassland, with only a few tall, straight trees and knee-high grass growing on it.
The island was surrounded by a fence that was shorter than Wang Yao's legs. Too lazy to find the entrance to the fence, he simply pulled and kicked it, creating a gap in the fence, and led a group of howling wild beasts through.
Not far along, he saw a group of white, chubby animals lying or reclining in the grass. He couldn't tell what they were, but they looked somewhat like sheep, though they didn't have as much wool. They were all round and plump, and they did resemble pigs in some ways.
However, these animals are clearly herbivores and must be living quite comfortably here, resting there calmly and peacefully, not at all like they are starving.
"Awoo..." A wolf in front of Wang Yao suddenly let out a fierce howl. When his followers saw the moving lump of meat in front of them, they all looked at it as if they had seen a delicacy and pounced on it in a hurry.
The lumps of flesh immediately erupted into chaos, letting out sharp, short screams as they scattered in all directions. In an instant, the once peaceful and tranquil island was transformed into a battlefield, and a massacre unfolded before Wang Yao's eyes.
"Uh...that..." Wang Yao was dumbfounded. He originally intended to release the animals, but unexpectedly it turned into killing them, leaving him in a dilemma. The carnivores around him were indeed starving, but those meatballs were innocent too.
He was standing there not knowing what to do when suddenly another deep, beastly roar came. He saw that whether they were slaughtering or fleeing, they all suddenly trembled and lay down. Some of them were so pathetic that they actually urinated.
"Where have you been? I've been looking for you everywhere." The fairy's voice came from above Wang Yao's head. Wang Yao looked up and saw the fairy riding a giant, dark red beast, looking at him through the two horns on the beast's forehead.
Wang Yao saw that the giant beast looked similar to a horse, except that it was four or five times the size of a normal horse. It cast a huge shadow as it stood there, and its mouth was much wider than that of a normal horse, with two upward-curving fangs sticking out from its lips.
Its mane was curly and wavy, as if it had been scalded, and grew like cloud patterns along its neck all the way to its back. A tail, which also looked like it had been scalded, was stuck to the beast's rump like a large clump of excrement, and would occasionally move from side to side.
The giant beast's large, watery eyes, like copper bells, seemed quite gentle as it curiously observed Wang Yao.
"This...this is the Cloud Ascending Beast?" Wang Yao asked in astonishment. "How did you get here? I didn't sense anything at all?"
"It flew here, how else could it have come? The Cloud-Ascending Beast makes no sound when it flies, so you wouldn't have noticed it if you weren't paying attention," the fairy maiden said with a smile. Clearly, finding the giant beast had put her in a great mood.
The Cloud-Ascending Beast suddenly stuck out a pink tongue and licked Wang Yao from head to toe. Wang Yao had "good people" on him, and although the Cloud-Ascending Beast's saliva dripped down around him, it didn't get on him at all.
