Chapter Fifty-Four: Reporting for Duty

Even immortals are human; their sentiments and minds aren't that broad. It's already a courtesy that they didn't create a couple of potholes on the road. It's completely understandable that they might be a little dissatisfied.

"Before I became an immortal, I thought immortals were such a high and mighty race. I never thought that after becoming an immortal, I would end up worse off than a mortal. Tell me, did I make the wrong choice in my life? I should have been killed by Xiao Cao back then and completely rotted away."

Hua Tuo became more and more excited as he spoke, staring at Wang Yao with wide eyes, spitting out words.

"Um, please don't get too agitated. I just think that the treatment of us immortals is really too poor..."

Looking at Hua Tuo's appearance, Wang Yao nodded repeatedly in deep sympathy. He himself only earned four hundred yuan a month, which was not even as much as the security guards at the real estate sales office, yet he was always worrying about people's happy marriages.

It's truly outrageous that someone is holding welfare money while taking responsibility for the prosperity and development of the entire human world.

"You don't know, the Heavenly Court has actually had the idea of improving the treatment of immortals within the system several times, but it has failed because of the strong opinions of mortals..." Hua Tuo said with a trembling beard.

"Which mortal? They've gone too far! What right do mortals have to interfere in the affairs of immortals?" Wang Yao was furious when he heard this. He found it utterly absurd. When did immortals start listening to mortals? What the hell was the point of being an immortal? He might as well be a mortal.

"Who knows which mortal it is? It's probably one of those people making a fuss online, saying things like immortals don't need to eat or drink, have no expenses, and have stable jobs; immortals have a lot of shady income and can engage in corruption; immortals have high social security benefits and good labor protections..."

"Damn it, I just don't understand. These netizens aren't immortals, so how do they know so much about us immortals? Is there some traitor among us immortals? Why are they spreading our little bit of goodness out there?" Hua Tuo said through gritted teeth.

“Yes, yes, yes, the worst are these traitors who infiltrate the team and cause trouble.” Wang Yao nodded repeatedly. No matter what race they are, if you add the word “traitor” to their name, they are definitely not good people.

“Actually, the treatment of immortals is really not good now. Your predecessor, Xi Fu, couldn’t stand it and resigned and left…” Hua Tuo shook his head deeply.

Although Wang Yao felt that Xi Fu's resignation seemed to have other reasons, Hua Gu was expressing his feelings here, and he couldn't do anything to spoil the mood, so he could only follow behind, nodding as if he deeply agreed.

"Sigh, let's go. Now it's the mortals who are in power. We immortals who are buried three inches in the yellow earth should just get lost as soon as possible, or we'll become a nuisance." After grumbling for a while, Hua Tuo's spirits improved. He turned around and asked Wang Yao to pick up Hui Shuo again so they could continue teleporting.

They jumped a few more times, and finally the three of them landed in a small valley surrounded by mountains. Facing them was a tall building with four big characters on the top: "Qunshan Hotel". People and cars were coming and going below, and it was quite lively.

Hua Tuo led Wang Yao, who was carrying Hui Shuo, into the hotel lobby. The lobby was decorated in a luxurious and grand style. Behind the reception desk at the front was a row of clocks, with the time of the human world, the time of the eastern part of the ocean world, the time of the northeastern part of the ocean world, and so on marked below.

The hotel listed fifteen or sixteen different times, as if it were specifically worried that foreigners might not have brought watches.

On either side of the reception desk were four tables covered with red cloth, spaced far apart. The tables were cluttered with various items, and someone was huddled behind them, sitting there furtively, doing something unknown.

Each table had a red paper sign standing next to it, with words seemingly written on it. Every now and then, someone would walk up to the table, like a spy making a rendezvous, and talk furtively with the person hiding behind the table before taking something from the table and leaving.

"Oh my? School's about to start, why is it so lively?" Hua Tuo walked into the hall and was a little stunned when he saw the scene.

Wang Yao noticed a red sign on a table near the hotel entrance on the left that read "Huadu Seed Industry New Achievements Release Conference," and on the right, it read "Chang Sheng University 10th Alumni Association Sign-in Area."

Looking at it this way, Wang Yao finally understood that this was all part of a meeting being held at this hotel.

The people he had just seen were the ones who signed in at the alumni association's registration desk. The saying goes, "Alumni association, alumni association, breaking up couples is one thing..." These attendees didn't have any good intentions, no wonder Wang Yao found them suspicious.

Immediately following, I saw two people signing in at a business press conference. These people were clearly doing serious business; they stood tall and proud, and their voices were particularly loud, as if they were afraid that others wouldn't know what they did and would misunderstand.

Wang Yao stood in the hall, holding Hui Shuo, somewhat puzzled. Where should he sign in? It seemed that none of the signs had the words "Heavenly Court's Office in the Human Realm Meeting Sign-in Area" written on them.

"Here!" While Wang Yao was hesitating, he felt Hua Gu touch his arm and lead him to one side of the hall. Wang Yao then discovered that there was a small teahouse on one side of the hall, and a table covered with a red cloth was tucked away next to the entrance of the teahouse.

A red paper sign stood upright next to the table, which read in bold letters, "Registration Area for the Symposium on Criticizing Pseudoscience".

This...this isn't right! Wasn't it supposed to be the first interim meeting and the ninth plenary meeting of the Eighth General Meeting of the Heavenly Court's Office in the Human Realm? How did it turn into criticizing pseudoscience? Criticizing pseudoscience...isn't that criticizing us guys?

Wang Yao was completely bewildered and had no idea what was going on, but he saw Hua Tuo already striding over.
