Chapter 67, Number 67 (End of Text)
Because of her illness, Xu Wu's fingertips were burning hot.
The sensation traveled to Jieying's hand the instant their skin touched, dissolving the chill from the cold wind.
"What are you blaming yourself for?" Xu Wu gently grasped his index finger and shook it softly.
Especially when she saw Jie Ying's ears, which were so red they were almost bleeding, and her head, which she wished she could bury into the cracks, the dizziness and pain caused by the fever actually subsided a lot, and even a faint smile appeared in her eyes.
Jie Ying didn't dare meet that gaze; he felt an invisible pressure relentlessly pressing down on his back.
Of course he felt guilty, as he believed that Xu Wu's illness was inextricably linked to his own actions.
If I had picked her up earlier, or if I hadn't made her stand in the cold wind and get soaked in the rain for so long yesterday, she might not be in the hospital now.
Jie Ying pursed her lips. Her hand, which was being held by Xu Wu and was hanging by her side, curled up slightly after feeling the other's silent comfort, allowing her fingertips to be encircled in the other's palm.
Ding-dong—
The large screen on the wall in front of me emitted a notification sound, followed by a emotionless electronic voice: "Ms. Xu Wu, number 341, please go to consultation room number 2 for your consultation."
It was repeated twice.
Jie Ying swallowed back the explanation she hadn't yet uttered. After helping Xu Wu to her feet, she made her shift most of her weight onto herself so that she wouldn't feel dizzy and unsteady.
"It's okay, I can go in by myself. You wait for me here," Xu Wu patted the back of his hand and said softly.
His original intention was to reassure Xie Ying, but he became defiant, tightening his grip on Xu Wu's waist and his beautiful eyes filled with silent accusation.
Xu Wu rubbed her temples, feeling a headache coming on. She couldn't stand his gaze, but in order not to disturb the patients behind her, she had no choice but to agree.
Consultation room number 2 is located to the left of the waiting room in the lobby. Just walk through the corridor to get there; the door is open.
Xu Wu also made a special check to see if the door number was correct before going in.
Unexpectedly, the moment she entered the room, her gaze met that of the doctor she was seeing and she froze.
Even the doctor in charge of the consultations was slightly surprised, but then his face lit up with delight.
"Long time no see, Xu Wu." The man's gentle voice was like a spring breeze.
Xu Wu snapped out of her reverie, her gaze falling on the name on the doctor's name tag: "Shang Xu".
She never expected to see him here. She frowned slightly, her expression unchanged, but when she sensed Jie Ying's suddenly somber mood, she calmly stopped his restless hand.
Xu Wu turned her head and whispered, "Go outside and wait for me."
Jie Ying held her breath as if she wanted to say something, but after seeing Xu Wu's sickly face and intimidating gaze, she didn't say anything and nodded in frustration, giving a low "okay".
The door to the consultation room was not allowed to be closed, so Jie Ying could clearly see everything happening inside from the bench outside. He stared intently at Shang Xu's hypocritical smiling face inside, and the threads of jealousy emanating from him almost suffocated him as they coiled around his neck.
His hands, resting on his knees, were clenched into fists, and he lowered his eyes to conceal the fierce aura emanating from him.
The pressure of his knuckles against his skin revealed his extreme unease, and the rapid beating of his heart in his chest seemed to be sending out warning signals.
Why did I have to see this person again? Jie Ying's brows and eyes were full of irritation, and she made no attempt to hide her impatience.
So annoying.
You despicable person.
The obscure gazes felt like thorns in his back, but Xu Wu ignored them as much as possible.
She sat on the stool and let Shang Xu use a thermometer to measure her forehead temperature.
drop-
The result came back: 38.9 degrees Celsius.
"I'll put her on an IV drip and get some medicine in a bit, then she'll be fine." After examining her symptoms, Shang Xu pulled out a piece of paper and wrote a few lines on it. Out of the corner of his eye, he couldn't help but glance at the person sitting outside through the open door. "It's been so long. I didn't expect him to still be with you."
Xu Wu didn't have the energy to answer, so she simply hummed in agreement.
“His sudden dropout back then really gave us a big shock,” Shang Xu smiled. “I thought you had lost contact a long time ago.”
He spoke without any personal emotion, as if he were simply stating the facts, so Xu Wu did not refute him.
But she didn't want to talk about Jieying in this setting, so even though she was listless, she still casually changed the subject: "I'm fine, but you studied medicine later?"
"Yes, I couldn't go against my family's wishes." Shang Xu said with a smile, "I'm just an intern. My teacher had to go out for a while and asked me to help out. I really couldn't believe it when I first saw your name."
Xu Wu didn't expect it to be such a coincidence. After all, Shang Xu's WeChat Moments hadn't been updated, and she didn't pay attention to other people's recent situations. It was unexpected that they would run into each other today.
Shang Xu hasn't changed much since high school; he just looks more gentle and his features don't have the same sharp, striking visual impact as Jie Ying.
Recalling Jie Ying's awkward behavior earlier, she knew that the other party was probably thinking of some off-topic plot lines again.
She had always felt that five years was too long, but she forgot that the time spanning in between was the fatal flaw.
She didn't know what had happened to Jieying in the past five years, and Jieying didn't understand her interpersonal relationships either.
Daydreaming and self-conjecture are the norm that time brings.
For some reason, Xu Wu understood Xie Ying's unease.
"I'll be going now." She took the card out of the machine and stood up.
"Wait a minute." Shang Xu called out to her, and only when she turned around did he suppress his excited heartbeat and pretend to be calm, asking, "Can I contact you again later?"
"Is there something that can't be said right now?" Xu Wu asked calmly.
She certainly understood what Shang Xu's words meant; she wasn't stupid and could naturally sense the fleeting joy that flashed across Shang Xu's face when he entered.
But none of that is necessary anymore.
Shang Xu could hear the rejection in Xu Wu's words, but the smile on his lips did not fade in the slightest. He simply sighed and said, "You really are exactly the same as you were in high school."
He gazed at the woman in front of him, whose demeanor remained distant, and her face gradually overlapped with that of the girl in his memory.
In the past few years, besides studying, he would also take the time to keep up with Xu Wu's news. While he was happy for her as she gradually made a name for herself, he would occasionally have some dark thoughts. In a way, he also harbored thoughts that were not much different from Jie Ying's.
I originally planned to wait until my internship ended before formally contacting her and re-establishing contact.
Can-
Xu Wu always has a persistent, persistent pest behind him.
Repeated concessions will not earn Xu Wu's pity or prompt him to turn back.
So this time he wanted to appear and become one of Xu Wu's options.
"You haven't changed much since high school."
"You know what I'm talking about." Shang Xu looked at her intently, ignoring her polite remark.
"If you don't have a partner, would you consider me?" he asked with a smile, but his hands, which were unconsciously gripping his white coat at his sides, couldn't hide his nervousness.
Xu Wu was stunned for a moment, then frowned. Before she could think of how to speak, a sudden knock on the door interrupted her thoughts.
She subconsciously looked toward the source of the sound and found Jie Ying leaning against the door, raising his hand expressionlessly as if to knock. There was a hint of coldness in his dark pupils. She didn't know how long he had been listening silently there.
"Fog, it's time to go." He spoke slowly, his voice landing on Xu Wu's expressionless face, finally allowing her heart, which had been pounding in her chest, to catch its breath.
Fortunately, she remained unmoved. Jie Ying secretly raised an eyebrow.
"Hmm." Xu Wu didn't ask him why he suddenly stood here, and nodded and walked towards him in accordance with Jie Ying's words.
There is no answer to Shang Xu's question, but sometimes not answering is the answer itself.
After Xu Wu's figure left the consultation room, Shang Xu turned his gaze to Jie Ying. He saw that the other party had a cold face and his gloomy eyes seemed to pierce through him. The invisible oppressive aura made the two of them instantly tense.
However, Jie Ying had no intention of getting entangled with him. After a short while, she chuckled and mouthed to him, "Mistress."
Upon understanding, Shang Xu's expression turned extremely ugly. He forcefully suppressed his anger and gritted his teeth.
He knew that Jie Ying was provoking him, but he couldn't move because of the occasion and his pride, which made him very uncomfortable.
After achieving his goal, Jie Ying didn't linger. He felt it was dirty to stay even a second longer in a place where Shang Xu was. He followed closely behind Xu Wu to accompany her while she received her IV drip.
The IV drip is placed in a separate room, where the seating is not a cold bench like outside, but a comfortable automatic massage chair, complete with a warm blanket.
Xu Wu frowned, not wanting to use the blanket on the massage chair.
The next second, a brand new, unopened blanket was handed over.
"Sit still." Jie Ying unpacked the blanket, unfolded it, and then bent down to carefully drape it over Xu Wu, covering her abdomen perfectly.
Xu Wutou leaned back in the massage chair, letting him do as he pleased.
There weren't many people in the hospital at this time, especially in this room where she was also receiving IV drips.
In the back row sat an elderly man resting with his eyes closed and a child fast asleep in his seat. Apart from the sounds of breathing, the only other sound in the room was the television playing cartoons in front of us.
Jie Ying sat down next to her and looked up at the IV drip.
"Are you cold?" Xu Wu asked, forcing herself to stay awake.
"It's not cold," he replied, pursing his lips.
The room was heated, so it wasn't cold.
Silence fell between them again.
Xu Wu didn't look at him again, but his presence sitting next to her was too strong to ignore.
After a long pause, Jie Ying spoke: "These past few years, you..."
He hesitated, his expression conflicted, and after saying those few words, he suddenly didn't know how to continue.
"What do you want to ask?" Xu Wu asked calmly.
She wasn't unaware of Xie Ying's eager words, but there were certain things he wanted to know himself that were far better left unsaid than for her to say.
After a few seconds of silence, Jie Ying asked intently, "Do you... like that person?"
Caught off guard by this seemingly insignificant remark, Xu Wu took a few seconds to realize who he was talking about. The drowsiness brought on by the IV drip vanished, and she asked in surprise, "What did you say?"
"Do you like him?" Jie Ying asked stubbornly again.
Xu Wu frowned: "The one you're talking about...."
“You despicable person,” he said through gritted teeth, his eyes unfathomable, “a mistress, a begging dog.”
“…Mistress?” Xu Wu scrutinized his choice of words, then suddenly chuckled meaninglessly.
"Only when someone's identity is clearly established and they are involved in a relationship can the other party be called a mistress."
“But Jieying,” she slightly raised her eyelids, “what is our relationship?”
Jie Ying was immediately stunned by those words, and then her eyes turned red at a speed visible to the naked eye.
