Chapter 39 Chen Yan's Art of Controlling Children

"What did you say?"

Zhou Yunshi held the phone a little further away from his ear, his gaze falling on the man with his head down in the corridor. He sighed and repeated his words: "Lifang doesn't need you to take care of her while she's giving birth. We'll hire a nanny."

Chen Yan was furious. "You're so eager to spend your money on others but not on your old mother? There's an old saying that goes, 'One mother can raise nine sons, but nine sons can't support one mother.' I raised you two brothers all by myself with great difficulty, and what do you mean by this?"

"You're not willing to spend money on your mother anymore?"

“I’ll give double whatever my second brother’s family contributes.” This was the first time Zhou Yunshi had ever realized how difficult his mother was. She said it was hard work and she wasn’t feeling well, so he simply wouldn’t let her do any work at all. What else could they say?

I never expected that a woman could be so persistent, turning black into white.

"You're not as filial as your second brother. He knows to take me to dance classes. What use are you?"

Zhou Yunshi sighed: "Isn't this what you're supposed to do, living with him? Lifang will pay for her own nanny. You can continue dancing, and I'll continue to send you money."

He said that on purpose to calm his mother down.

"Her money? What money does she have? Isn't her money your money?" Chen Yan's eyes darted around, and she said, "Fine, give me an address, I'll go see Lifang."

Is anyone else there?

As if by some strange twist of fate, Zhou Yunshi told a lie: "Lifang's colleagues are all here."

Chen Yan hates interacting with outsiders. Those people always gossip about her playing mahjong behind her back, and arguing with them is exhausting. Over time, she tries to avoid contact with them as much as possible.

Sure enough, "Never mind then..."

Ya Ya is here too, let her come over and talk to me on the phone.

"She's asleep. I'll have her call later."

"Oh, I'll hang up now. Remember to transfer the money this month." Chen Yan said indifferently, "Give me two thousand. I want to buy new clothes this month."

That was the real reason she called today.

"Mom," Zhou Yunshi called out to her, "I will still give my second brother double whatever he gives me from now on, but two thousand won't do."

A worker in their factory only earns six or seven hundred yuan a month, which is enough to support a family.

He gave his mother 1,400 yuan a month, plus what his second brother gave him.

A retired old woman earns two thousand a month, which is more than she can ever spend.

"Why not? Don't think I don't know how much you earn." The previously smooth process of collecting debts suddenly encountered obstacles. For the sake of money, Chen Yan was willing to lower her stance. "Don't compare yourself to your brother. He's dating someone, and I feel bad asking him for money when I'm free..."

After talking for a while, there was no response from the other end, and the atmosphere became tense.

"Say something."

Zhou Yunshi felt a pang of bitterness in his heart, his voice hard and strained, "My second brother isn't married yet. I have a family to support. As the eldest son, if you feel I haven't done enough—"

The man paused, then spoke clearly, "That's the only way."

"Hey, you're working..." Chen Yan was about to retort when the call was suddenly cut off.

She stood up angrily, knocking over her water glass in the process. "You unfilial son!"

Someone nearby asked her, "Didn't you say your son was coming to pick you up?"

Another person chimed in, "Well, his son is busy, so giving him money is better than nothing... Our Yan Yan is lucky; her two sons are tall, handsome, and very filial. Is the big boss busy with business today?"

Chen Yan hummed in agreement, then turned and went outside to dial another number.

.

Li Zhi stood to the side with his head down, trembling with fear, holding his breath and not daring to look at his boss's face.

He was patted on the shoulder, and Zhou Yunshi told him to sit down.

"Do you think I did the right thing?" Zhou Yunshi asked.

Li Zhi looked up. He had something he wanted to say, but he was afraid that his boss would be unhappy.

Which rural parent doesn't support their son? The boss's current success is all thanks to his hard work and dedication, achieved by drinking at every table. It didn't just fall from the sky. Chen Yan went too far.

She comes from the countryside, but she insists on adopting the sophisticated manners of wealthy urban women, asking her son for child support. She does nothing, has no health problems, yet the child support keeps increasing.

In contrast, Li Zhi is truly grateful to his mother.

She feels sorry for herself, taking care of her grandson and doing housework without complaint, and she won't spend any money she's offered.

When the boss asked him a question, Li Zhi responded.

"Should I still send her 1,400 this month?" Zhou Yunshi asked again.

Li Zhi's expression froze for a moment, then he paused and said, "She just received money for her birthday last month. You could give her a thousand yuan and she wouldn't be able to spend it all. She has food and lodging. Where does she spend all her money?"

There's an 80% chance it went to support his second brother.

Li Zhi thought for a moment but didn't say anything. They were all his parents' children, and he had never seen such favoritism.

He knew his boss was filial, but he still couldn't stand it.

After thinking for a moment, she advised again, "No matter how much you give her, she'll never feel it's enough. Will she even say a word of thanks to you? Why give her any more?"

Chen Yan's house was paid for by the boss, as was her tuition; Li Zhi handled all of these matters, so he knew exactly what was being spent.

Sun Lifang's ears were incredibly sharp; she hadn't expected Li Zhi to think so clearly.

Indeed, how much was a person's salary in 1998?

Chen Yan is very good at manipulating her son. She often bursts into tears and complains about how difficult it is to raise a son and how he has forgotten his mother after getting married.

Marrying a wife and forgetting one's mother?

All of their family's monthly expenses combined didn't even amount to what they gave Chen Yan.

The house Chen Yan lives in was bought by Zhou Yunshi. In addition to the monthly child support, he also gives her a large red envelope during holidays. What more could she ask for?

She would subsidize her youngest son, then come to her eldest son's house to act arrogantly and domineeringly, controlling her daughter-in-law and helping relatives. She turned a blind eye to all of this and silently endured it.
