The two agreed to kill Yuan Qingyi first, but neither of them was as skilled as Yuan Qingyi. They couldn't fight her one-on-one, so they attacked her together. Yuan Qingyi also had helpers by her side.
They decided to outsmart each other, disguising themselves as a brother and sister out for a stroll.
Zheng Yong was tall and slender, a head taller than Nan Yi. After changing his clothes, he had a refined and scholarly air, like a scholar going to the capital for the imperial examination.
Nan Yi's imposing presence was undeniable; unlike modern women who were gentle and reserved in their speech and behavior, she was dressed in the attire of a Han Chinese woman, making her look every bit the spoiled young lady.
They found the nearest town, secretly investigated five inns within the town, and finally discovered Yuan Qingyi's whereabouts.
“He really didn’t leave. He must be looking for us too. But he didn’t expect that we didn’t leave the city at all, but hid in the suburbs,” Nan Yi said, lying by the courtyard wall.
Zheng Yong squatted by the wall, racking his brains for a way to outsmart them.
Unlike Zheng Yong, Nan Yi was no match for the assassin who wanted her dead. She was willing to risk everything to kill him, regardless of her bottom line or the underhanded tactics he might use.
She quickly came up with an idea, called to Zheng Yong, and secretly slipped into the inn's back kitchen. "Nan Yi, what good idea have you come up with?"
"You'll see in a bit. By the way, do you have any medicine? Any kind of sleeping potion or intoxicating powder will do." She had overheard outside the window that Yuan Qingyi had ordered stir-fried beef with scallions.
"Oh, yes." Zheng Yong took a small paper packet out of his sleeve and gave it to her.
Nan Yimei's heart skipped a beat. "Where did this come from?" This guy carries this thing around so casually; hopefully he won't use it on her.
"I bought these at the pharmacy when you were eating glutinous rice balls," Zheng Yong said casually.
"They sell this in pharmacies?" she exclaimed in surprise.
Zheng Yong laughed and said, "As long as you have money, there's nothing you can't buy."
Nan Yi nodded, clearly impressed. Seeing that there weren't many people in the kitchen, she glanced at the dishes on the counter and pretended to bump into the waiter as he brought them out.
"Hey, be careful."
The waiter, carrying the tray, breathed a sigh of relief upon seeing that the food hadn't spilled. Then, noticing that it was a woman who had bumped into him, he immediately put on a smiling face and said, "Sir, I didn't see the road clearly, please forgive me."
Nan Yi waved his hand impatiently and walked towards the guest rooms in the front yard.
Once inside, Nan Yi ran to the back window and waved to Zheng Yong, who was still lingering in the courtyard on the first floor.
Zheng Yong looked around and, seeing that no one was paying attention, leaped into a guest room on the second floor.
"Alright, let's wait for the medicine to take effect, then we'll make our move," Nan Yi said with a smile. She didn't believe Yuan Qingyi could escape this time.
"That's just ordinary 'soft fragrance powder,' it won't be very effective. We need to be prepared for the worst."
He wasn't as confident as Nan Yi. Most experts could eliminate ordinary soft fragrance powder by circulating their internal energy, but special soft bone powder was more difficult to deal with.
"See the horses in the stable?" Nan Yi asked, a teacup dangling from his lips, his left hand propping up his chin as he peered out the window. "I don't need to say anything more, do I?"
In a battle between masters, victory or defeat can be decided in an instant. Yuan Qingyi was poisoned by the Soft Fragrance Powder. When she attacked, the man was unable to run and could only rely on his horse.
Zheng Yong raised his eyebrows, scattering a few beans from his palm onto the table. Nan Yi picked them up and chuckled to herself. She had barely made her move, and this guy had already prepared his counter-move.
Seeing that it was almost time, she stood up and said, "I'll go and keep watch in Yuan Qingyi's room. You go and ambush him in the backyard. Let's try to make our move in a less crowded place so as not to alert the officials."
"No, I'll go into his room, you wait for him outside."
Nan Yi pressed on his wound, heard him gasp for breath, and said irritably, "With your injury, what can you do to him?"
Zheng Yong remained silent. After his injury, he had at most a 30% chance of defeating Yuan Qingyi. He did not insist and followed Nan Yi's arrangement.
On Yuan Qingyi's side, after finishing his lunch, he wanted to go back to his guest room for a short rest. As soon as he entered the room, he suddenly felt something was wrong, and his internal energy stagnated.
He was taken aback and was about to use his internal energy to dispel the shock when he heard the sound of wind breaking behind him.
Nan Yi flashed forward like lightning, his short blade piercing Yuan Qingyi's back. Yuan Qingyi feigned an attack and dodged to the window.
"If my target appears in my room, then the abnormality in my body must be her doing," Yuan Qingyi thought angrily. "Sneak attack from behind, despicable!"
Nan Yi raised his head and sneered, "You're just an assassin who has tried to kill me time and again, yet you dare to talk to me about the word 'despicable'? Do you deserve it?"
That stab felt so good; it finally relieved some of the frustration in her heart.
"Yuan Qingyi, as an assassin, you must have long been prepared for your fate. Are you ready?"
Those words were so blunt, it was like saying, "Are you ready to die?"
Yuan Qingyi was seriously injured and poisoned by the Soft Fragrance Powder. Even though she was furious at being ambushed, she remained calm, collected and rational.
The situation was dire; we had no choice but to flee.
He threw something towards Nan, who instinctively dodged it. Unexpectedly, the other party had tricked her, and by the time she realized what was happening, Yuan Qingyi had already jumped out of the window and left.
She quickly caught up and saw that Yuan Qingyi was heading towards the stables.
Nan Yi curled her lips. This guy had already walked into their trap. Riding a horse would only make him die faster.
She leaped out of the window, just as Yuan Qingyi spurred his horse away.
The innkeepers were so frightened that they scattered in all directions.
"Nan Yi, come here." Zheng Yong called to her, leading the other two horses.
Nan Yi and Zheng Neng leaped onto their horses. Her riding skills were mediocre, and she was a step slower than Zheng Yong as they left the inn. If it were an ordinary person, they would definitely seek help from the government if they were injured. Yuan Qingyi, as an assassin, was a wanted criminal by the government. Considering Nan Yi's identity, if he wanted to escape, his only option was to leave the city.
Unfortunately, he didn't know that Nan Yi was now wary of the government.
The three riders closely followed each other out of the city. Yuan Qingyi was injured and could not run fast, Zheng Yong was seriously injured and could not run fast either, and Nan Yi was not good at riding. It was lucky that she did not fall off her horse when it galloped so fast.
