Chapter Ninety-Five: Returning Home

Consort Tong has disappeared again. Xiao Shunzi knelt in the study, trembling with fear. Cold sweat poured down his back, soaking his inner lining. Despite his thin frame, he stood ramrod straight. After reporting everything in detail, he stole a glance at his master before hanging his head tightly. He had only one thought in his mind: he was doomed, doomed.

Su Peisheng walked in and said, "Reporting to Master, the scout has returned."

"How so?"

"Reporting to you, sir, the governor's office said that they lost an insignificant prisoner and have issued a warrant for his arrest, but they did not mention the concubine or Constable Xiao."

Yinzhen pursed his lips, narrowed his eyes, and sneered. He raised his hand in anger and smashed the white jade paperweight in two with a "bang".

How dare they! It's insignificant. If he hadn't arrived a step too late, those two girls would have been kidnapped first, and then they would be the ones saying the prince's wife is insignificant.

But who exactly dared to break into the prison of the Nine Gates Admiral without leaving any clues?

The next day at four o'clock

"Master, Xiao Xi has returned home."

Yinzhen hurriedly asked, "Where is the concubine?"

Su Peisheng said, "There is still no news. Xiao Xi is still unconscious and her injuries are quite serious. We can't find out anything about her for the time being. I heard from her brother that a man in black asked him to go to the inn and see Xiao Xi, who had already been treated."

Having received medical treatment, upon hearing this, Yinzhen relaxed a tense feeling in his heart, at least knowing that the people who kidnapped her had no malicious intent. "Keep a close eye on Xiao Xi. Inform the master immediately as soon as she wakes up."

On the third day, the listless Eunuch Shun, under the cold glare of Yinzhen, trembled as he recounted for the third time how Consort Tong had secretly taken him out of the mansion to rescue someone. In his heart, he prayed to all the gods and Buddhas in the Western Paradise, hoping that Consort Tong would return to the mansion as soon as possible, otherwise, his life would be over.

That's it?

Xiao Shunzi shook his head blankly. That's enough. He couldn't help but mutter to himself, "If I had known this would happen, why did I do it in the first place? I couldn't bear to see what happened back then, but the master turned a blind eye. There's no medicine for regret in this world. I can only pity the Xiao sisters."

"Reporting to Your Majesty, that's all. After I went to fetch the doctor, I returned to find that Consort Fu was nowhere to be seen, and Xiao Xi was also missing. I deserve to die a thousand deaths, please punish me, Your Majesty."

Yinzhen, enraged, shouted, "You deserve to die! You deserve to die! You even lost your master! Go back and stop getting in my way!"

He punished the servant, but when she returned to the manor, he would be the one to be punished. He hit her, and she resented him; he hit her maid, and she also resented him. In the end, he would be the one who didn't get any credit. So be it.

Yinzhen frowned, rubbing his aching forehead. Where was she? He didn't have time. The day after tomorrow was the day the emperor would depart for his summer retreat. How could he be content if he couldn't find her or see her before then?

She attacked Lady Nian without cause in the palace, which could not be hidden from others. He originally intended to ignore her for a few days to shut up the gossip in the palace. Lady Nian was diagnosed with pregnancy, which made him quite happy. The lack of offspring had already displeased the Emperor. On the way back to the mansion, that incident occurred, which added to his anger.

In that situation, her public loss of composure caused him to lose face and also awakened the resentment that had been suppressed in his heart for a long time. So he wanted to teach her a lesson so that she would know the difference between superiors and inferiors. Little did he expect that he would make a mistake.

"Knock knock"

“Come in,” he said, leaning back in his chair, his hand unconsciously stroking something in his sleeve. Yi’er didn’t like jewelry; her hair, fingers, and wrists were all pitifully bare. The only bracelet she had given him was returned to him in a huff, making him grit his teeth in anger.

Su Peisheng entered with his head down, staring only at the floor in front of him. Yinzhen's face grew even colder upon seeing him. "Still no news?"

Su Peisheng trembled slightly, cursing Xiao Shunzi in his heart, but he forced himself to reply, "In reply to you, sir, there is no such thing."

"Then what are you doing standing here? Go and keep looking."

Su Peisheng remained motionless despite his anger, glancing at the door before looking at his master. Yinzhen glanced at him and said irritably, "Speak." His gaze, however, fell on the desk, and he picked up a book to flip through it.

"Reporting to Your Majesty, Consort Nian's maid is waiting outside, she has something to report." Su Peisheng's brow twitched slightly when he caught a glimpse of his master's actions. That looked like Consort Tong's "Admonitions for Women" that she had left here. She had been looking at it every day, and the edges were already frayed.

Yinzhen hummed in response, as if he was listening, yet also as if he wasn't, which made Eunuch Su quite uncomfortable. Did he hear it or not? Ever since Consort Nian came along, the prince had been paying her all sorts of attention, even more so than Consort Tong. What was the prince up to?

As a eunuch, he was ignorant of matters of love and affection, and he became increasingly confused about who the Prince valued more, Consort Nian or Consort Tong.

Yinzhen didn't let her hesitate for long, simply saying, "I'm busy."

He carefully put away the frayed booklet. The figure standing there remained motionless. Yinzhen's eyes were as dark as ink, and his two sword-like eyebrows were about to merge into one line. The temperature in the room dropped during the day, and the atmosphere was freezing cold.

Eunuch Su broke out in a cold sweat twice, his heart trembling with fear. Just as he was bracing himself for the attack, he heard a voice ask, "Is there anything else?"

What wasn't said next was that if nothing happened, you were dead.

"Your Majesty, the Empress Dowager has sent someone to deliver an imperial edict."

Yinzhen was slightly taken aback. So fast? It was likely that someone with ulterior motives had already spread the news of the incident the other day into the palace, making the situation more complicated. He quickly said, "Please invite her in."

The person who came was a familiar face, the governess from his mother's palace. He relaxed his brow slightly, thankfully.

"This old servant greets Fourth Prince. May Your Highness be well."

"Get up. What brings your mother here?"

The old nanny had served in the household before, and the Fourth Prince and Consort Tong had treated her well. Out of gratitude, the nanny spoke gently, "Your Highness, according to Her Majesty's decree, Consort Tong is unruly, spoiled, and willful, with incorrigible bad habits. She is ordered to reflect on her actions behind closed doors, cultivate her character, and that the primary consort properly discipline her so she can change her ways as soon as possible. Furthermore..." The old nanny hesitated, unable to finish her sentence.
