Chapter Sixteen: Going Out

That night, Nan couldn't sleep in bed. She couldn't figure out the man's hot and cold attitude during the day. They had only met three times, and it had all turned out like this.

We should leave as soon as possible and make sure our escape route is secret. She may be a concubine, but she is also a prince's secondary consort. If we find her, I don't know if we can keep our heads.

Nan Yi touched his neck, imagining the scene of being beheaded, and his body shuddered. He couldn't think about it anymore, so he stopped.

She stared at the only source of light in the room, the dim, flickering lamplight casting eerie shadows on the furniture.

Something seemed to be stirring in the darkness, about to leap out. The surrounding silence was terrifying. She suddenly realized how terrifying the night could be. It seemed unbelievable that she had been able to return to the villa alone that night.

Nan Yi forgot the pain in her hand, burrowed into the quilt and trembled. She had never believed in ghosts or gods, but since she transmigrated, she had started to believe. She gripped the corners of the quilt tightly, still feeling a sense of unease and fear. Oh no, what if a ghost jumps out and grabs her?

She was reborn into another's body, which is considered illegal possession of someone else's body. If the King of Hell finds out, he will come back to take her back to the underworld to be reincarnated. Should she go or not?

I forced myself to clear my mind and let my thoughts wander. I started to miss the happy days I spent with my fellow students on the mountain in modern times.

After returning to his residence, Yinzhen had lunch in his primary wife's courtyard and planned to rest there for the day, but a problem arose when he was about to settle down.

The primary consort was carefully chosen by the Emperor. She was of above-average appearance, but her superior temperament was elegant, gentle and dignified. After marrying him, she gave birth to his eldest son and managed all the affairs of the household in an orderly manner, making him impeccable in every way.

He was very satisfied with his primary wife.

Today, I am troubled by everything, but I can't explain why. I stare at the figure beside me in silence for a long time before finally getting up and putting on my clothes, which inadvertently disturbs my wife.

Nara also got up, and the quilt slipped down, revealing red plum blossoms on her fair skin. She blushed and grabbed the quilt to pull it up. Yinzhen chuckled, helped her lie down, and helped tuck the quilt back in.

Nara smiled gently, "Is Your Highness not resting?"

"No, I have some official business to attend to. I'll go back to my study to take care of it. You must be tired from what I just did. Get some rest."

Nara glanced at him, her eyes sparkling, and said reproachfully, "What are you saying, sir? Isn't it presumptuous to talk about being tired?"

Why should husband and wife have such formalities? The master is too polite to her, lacking the casualness that should exist between ordinary couples. She wants to help Yinzhen get dressed.

Yinzhen stopped her, saying, "You don't need to get up, I'll dress myself." He then dressed himself and before leaving, he glanced back at Nara and said, "I'll stay in the study tonight," before leaving the room.

As Nara watched him leave, her smile faded, and a look of worry appeared on her forehead. She also lost her sleepiness. Liu, the wet nurse on night duty in the next room, heard the noise, got up, put on her clothes, and went to Nara's bedside. Seeing that her mistress was not asleep, she asked, "Fujin, has the master left?"

Nara sighed deeply and said sadly, "Nanny, did he go to the other courtyard today?" It wasn't a question, but a statement of certainty.

Liu said, "Yes, I heard from Xiao Shunzi that I stayed there for about an hour."

Upon hearing this, Lady Nara frowned and remained silent for a long time. "Now that Lady Tong has recovered from her illness, what happened at the other residence?"

Liu thought for a moment and said, "No, I heard from Xiao Shunzi that Consort Tong seems to have lost her memory. The master even called the imperial physician for her. There's nothing else wrong."

"It's a good thing for her. I thought she would do something drastic, but this delicate person has simply forgotten everything and is even getting better. I really didn't expect that."

She sent her to another courtyard and had the servants spread rumors that she had fallen out of favor and was disliked by the master. With a delicate person like Tong Shi, as long as she thought too much, she would soon fall ill. She had already expected the process, but she did not expect the ending to be so unexpected.

Nara smiled bitterly, "I've been married to him for several years, and I think I know him quite well. Something must have happened today, it must be about Tong Shi. He was clearly being perfunctory with me just now." She felt no shame in talking to her wet nurse about their private conversation.

How could he not feel anything when the two of them were doing something so intimate? At first, he seemed a little hasty, and then it was as if he wanted to finish the task as soon as possible, completely disregarding her feelings.

After hearing this, Liu comforted her, saying, "My lady, men always have important things to do, so don't worry about such trivial matters. You are the primary wife, and no one can surpass you. Tong is a concubine, and she can't surpass you. No matter how much she is favored, it's just a temporary pleasure. Besides, my master is a man of principle, so you can rest assured."

It is unwise for the princess to focus solely on love. The prince is a prince, and more women will enter the harem. Suppression alone is useless; a balance of power is the best policy.

These words stuck in her throat. What woman doesn't want to be loved, especially a legitimate married couple?

Lady Nara thought that perhaps she was too greedy. At first, she wanted to secure her position as the principal wife, then she wanted to control the inner court, and later she wanted to give birth to a legitimate son. She succeeded, and now she wants not only to be his primary consort, but also to be loved by him. She was asking for too much.

Tong Shi? Regardless of whether she was favored or not, she didn't want her to return to the mansion so easily.

From their first meeting, she regarded this woman as a formidable rival. In terms of beauty, it was unlikely that anyone in the entire capital could find another beauty as stunning as her.

There were none among the princes' wives. Moreover, when the emperor chose a prince's wife, appearance was secondary; family background and character were of utmost importance.

She still remembered the day of the tea ceremony. Tong's beauty made all the other wives pale in comparison. When the men saw her, none of them exclaimed in admiration or envy.

The sisters-in-law looked at her with nothing but pity. And rightly so; what family wouldn't feel uneasy having such a beautiful concubine in their backyard?

Before Lady Tong entered the mansion, Lady Li was the most favored by the master, almost rivaling her. After Lady Tong entered the mansion, if Lady Li hadn't relied on the two princes, the master might not have thought of her for ten days or half a month.

This woman cannot be tolerated in this household.

When Yinzhen returned to his study, his mind was still unsettled. Earlier that day at the villa, Lady Tong had angered him, and he had been feeling irritable ever since, though he couldn't pinpoint the exact reason for his irritation.
