That was the happiest day Su Er had had recently.
The emotional disappointment was overshadowed by the sense of accomplishment from her work. Even after returning to the hotel, Su Er was still excitedly pulling on Lin Shuqin's arm, saying, "Sister Qin, I got it right in one take with Director Guo! It's my first time."
With a "beep," the door opened, and Lin Shuqin's head ached from her noise. "I know, I know, you've been nagging me about this for ages on the way here."
Su Er continued talking to herself, "It seems like my senior brother and I don't have any scenes together in a couple of days, so I'm going to treat him to a nice meal."
Su Er has been looking worried lately, and Xiao Shiyu thought she was also troubled by filming, so he spent a lot of his free time rehearsing scenes with her.
Lin Shuqin saw all this and thought she should thank them properly. Just as she was about to say yes, she looked into the room and suddenly fell silent.
Su Er clearly noticed the worry on her face. Following her gaze, his heart sank, and the smile on his face froze for a moment.
She hadn't seen him for over two months, and she undoubtedly missed him, but... she hadn't figured out how to face him yet.
From the moment she learned that news, Su Er kept trying to reduce her investment in the relationship and her desire to share with him.
On the surface, this method seemed very effective, but only Su Er herself knew that in the dead of night, the person who repeatedly appeared in her dreams was still him.
"Do you want me to stay here?" Lin Shuqin asked her in a low voice.
Su Er had never discussed with her in detail whether she and Jiang Siyan had actually broken up, so Lin Shuqin could only infer a general idea from her daily behavior.
Lately, she has rarely seen Su Er chatting on his phone, and naturally assumed that they had almost completely broken up.
Su Er shook her head and forced a smile. "No need, Sister Qin, I'll talk to him myself."
"Call me if anything happens," Lin Shuqin told her worriedly.
"knew."
As she spoke, Su Er gently closed the door, turned her back and sighed quietly. Composing herself, she smiled and approached him, asking, "Why are you here?"
Jiang Siyan casually raised his eyes, his gaze sweeping coldly over her: "What? Am I bothering you by not being able to come?"
Su Er was taken aback by his cold gaze. She put down her bag, sat down next to him, and tugged at his sleeve. "Why are you talking like that? So sarcastic."
She deliberately softened her tone, but Jiang Siyan did not embrace her as he usually did.
Smoke swirled around his face, but he seemed no different from usual, exuding an air of aloofness and superiority.
Amidst the subtle murmurs, Su Er could vaguely sense his displeasure.
"Okay, we finally got to see each other, don't be angry. It's not good to always be frowning." Even though they were going to be separated, Su Er didn't want things to get ugly between them.
She cupped his face in her hands and gently stroked the furrow between his brows with her fingertips. "Are you unhappy about something? Tell me."
She was still willing to coax him.
Jiang Siyan stubbed out his cigarette, his eyes narrowed slightly, and his fingers, reeking of tobacco, pinched her chin.
Just now, when she was facing that man, she was smiling much more happily than she is now.
This scrutinizing gesture made Su Er uncomfortable, and she turned her head away, subconsciously trying to avoid his gaze.
Jiang Siyan, however, forcefully turned her face to face, leaned slightly forward, and his coldness in his eyes was undisguised, like a sharp blade piercing her chest.
Su Er reached out to pry his fingers open, "Jiang Siyan, you're hurting me."
The scene from that afternoon suddenly flashed before his eyes, and his temples throbbed. Jiang Siyan narrowed his eyes and ignored her struggles.
The standoff lasted for more than ten seconds before Jiang Siyan withdrew his hand, but the indifference in his eyes was even more pronounced.
He spoke coldly, "Su Er, last time it was Ji Lin, and this time it's your senior brother. You've repeatedly shown such a lack of restraint. Do you think I have a very good temper?"
Her chin was still throbbing slightly. Su Er forced back the urge to cry and thought about it carefully. She and her senior brother had only met today while filming. His words must mean he had misunderstood something.
She took a deep breath, trying to keep her tone calm, "You came to the set this afternoon, why didn't you call me?"
"You're high-fiving and hugging, I don't want to disturb you," Jiang Siyan said sarcastically.
The sharp words were like a boulder pressing on her heart. She wanted to talk to him properly, but from the initial heartache to the current helplessness, Su Er suddenly felt that no amount of explanation would be of any use. Her voice was very low, "Jiang Siyan, we haven't seen each other for more than two months. Can't you talk to me properly?"
Jiang Siyan chuckled, "Er'er, now you're complaining that I'm not being nice?"
The contemptuous tone hurt Su Er's self-esteem, and her attempt to communicate with a gentle attitude was completely worn away. Her gaze towards Jiang Siyan was filled with incomprehension at his unreasonable behavior. "Jiang Siyan, that's my job. That's the nature of an actor's job."
She was also very tired from filming, spending days without sleep to study a single shot. She had tried her best to explain to him, but... what did she get in return?
Are those harsh and hurtful words?
Su Er thought that perhaps they should never have met in the first place.
"Nature of work." He murmured these four words, then curled his lips and gave a nonchalant "heh."
His arrogant demeanor and mockery were evident in every word he uttered.
This is probably a kind of heartlessness that she could never learn.
Those moments when we thought we were in love seem utterly ridiculous in this instant.
She clenched her fists, lowered her eyes, and finished speaking haltingly, "If you... if you can't accept it, then why did you... why did you provoke me in the first place?"
Jiang Siyan's knuckles tapped lightly on the armrest of the sofa. Every movement and tone of his voice lacked the gentle and peaceful manner they had shared before, replaced by the contemptuous disdain of someone in a superior position. "Er'er, that's a heartless thing to say. Was it me who provoked you first?"
Su Er felt as if she had been slapped across the face, the pain burning intensely.
He knew, he always knew, that she borrowed a light when she took that step out of the hotel.
These are all pieces of evidence, evidence that she was misled and had ulterior motives.
He had always known this.
Su Er suddenly realized that all those tears she shed at night, her reluctance and attachment to this relationship, were all a joke.
It was all a one-woman show, a self-inflicted charade on her part.
Why bother? Let's stop here.
Su Er tried to console herself.
The pain in her eyes disappeared into the vast summer night sky as dusk fell.
Su Er smiled slightly, her eyes sparkling, and said, "Let's break up, Jiang Siyan."
