Chapter 8 Little New Year

On the way back, a low-pressure atmosphere permeated the entire carriage, mainly due to the low-pressure aura emanating from Qin Yi.

Lin Changchun, a chatterbox, kept his lips tightly shut, afraid of saying the wrong thing and incurring Qin Yi's wrath.

Su Wan stared out the window in a daze, not saying a word. What kind of outcome would her life ultimately take?

It would be a lie to say she wasn't worried, but would worrying even help? They couldn't decide whether Qin Yi's leg would get better, or even if it could get better at all.

But she was just not willing to give up.

Why should her life be filled with constant setbacks?

She is an extremely resilient person; once she sets her mind on something, she is determined to make it happen.

It's just a leg, isn't it? This doctor said no, so she took him to see another doctor.

If Western medicine doesn't work, try traditional Chinese medicine. If traditional Chinese medicine doesn't work, try folk remedies or find extraordinary people and doctors.

She has brought back to life those who were on the verge of death; as long as people are alive, nothing is a problem.

When Su Wan was ten years old, her adoptive mother sent her up the mountain to cut pig feed. She accidentally fell off a cliff and her legs were in so much pain that she couldn't walk.

With sheer tenacity, she climbed to a place with a path, where a kind uncle from the same village carried her home.

But her adoptive mother thought she was a burden. Not only did she refuse to let her see the doctor, she also scolded and beat her for not doing any work and just eating. Later, when she saw that she really couldn't get up, she let her lie in bed.

If I remember, I'll throw her a steamed bun; if I don't, I'll let her go hungry.

She had thought she might die like this, but she was destined to live.

When she was on the verge of death, a wandering Taoist priest came to her house to ask for water. He saw that she was so thin that she was just skin and bones. He treated her and was a Taoist doctor. That day, he went up the mountain to pick some herbs, crushed them, and applied them to her.

The kind-hearted old Taoist priest would go up the mountain every few days to collect herbs to change her legs. A month later, she was miraculously able to stand up again.

Later, she recovered by exercising every day with great perseverance.

Yes, that Taoist priest!

Su Wan's eyes lit up. If they could find that Taoist priest, Qin Yi might be saved.

Qin Yi was unaware of Su Wan's inner thoughts. He only felt extremely annoyed. He had known it would end like this, but Su Wan insisted on making things difficult.

The doctor already said that, what's the point of her still foolishly asking for medication?

Qin Yi himself didn't realize that what he feared most was whether Su Wan would leave him because of his leg.

Previously, I only saw him sitting in a wheelchair. When the doctor said that the treatment was ineffective, it was as if he had made a judgment about the rest of his life.

This means he will spend the rest of his life in a wheelchair.

Will Su Wan be able to stand the loneliness?

How long can they hold out?

One year, two years, three years, five years... Will she get tired of a cripple who is practically useless?

Will I look down on him? Will I despise him?

Having carried out so many missions and witnessed life and death, he understands human nature better than anyone else.

Human nature cannot withstand the test, not to mention that they have no emotional foundation at all. Su Wan was forced to marry because of her parents' wishes, but what if her temperament changes in a few years?

When will she reach the point where she can take control of her own life?

Will she choose to stay?

Especially considering the Su family's circumstances, what if Su Wan were allowed to return someday?

Qin Yi felt his mind was in a mess, and the more chaotic it became, the more irritable he became. He didn't say a word until he got home. Su Wan wasn't a talkative person to begin with, and the silence in the car was unsettling.

Once home, Lin Changchun quickly drove off, afraid that if he stayed even a second longer, Qin Yi would pick a fight with him, and he couldn't bear his anger.

When Qin Yi got home, he pushed his wheelchair back to his room by himself.

When Grandma Qin came up to him, she could tell from his face that the test results were not good. She spoke with some concern.

"Xiao Yi."

The only response she received was the sound of Qin Yi closing the door.

Grandma Qin looked at Su Wan with some concern, but Su Wan shook her head, indicating that she should not disturb Qin Yi's rest.

Su Wan was busy kneading dough and mixing fillings, while Grandma Qin assisted her from the side. She didn't say anything but kept glancing at Su Wan.

She was worried.

The last granddaughter-in-law just glanced at Qin Yi, who was slumped in a wheelchair, and ran away.

Now Su Wan took Qin Yi for a checkup, and when they came back, Xiao Yi was in that state. The result was obvious, and she didn't dare to think about it.

Noticing Grandma Qin's unease, Su Wan felt a headache coming on. She wasn't good at handling this kind of relationship and felt somewhat helpless.

But seeing Grandma Qin's dejected look, he thought for a moment and decided to try to comfort her.

"Grandma, don't worry, I will find a way to cure him and make sure he can stand up again."

"Okay! Okay, okay!"

Reassured by Su Wan, Grandma Qin was so happy she kept wiping her eyes; she knew she hadn't misjudged Su Wan.

Su Wan is a good girl.

While the mother and daughter were making dumplings, Su Wan told Grandma Qin the parts of what the doctor had said. Grandma Qin took Su Wan's hand and put the jade bracelet on Su Wan's wrist.

The bracelet, still warm from her body, touched Su Wan's wrist, and she quickly tried to take it off.

"Grandma, this won't do."

“Why not? If Grandma says it’s okay, then it’s okay. This is my dowry, originally intended for Xiao Yi’s mother, but…”

Grandma Qin wiped away her tears again as she spoke, and started talking about Qin Yi's parents.

Qin Yi's parents were both soldiers who died in the line of duty seven years ago. This incident had a significant impact on Qin Yi, and he was determined to bring those criminals to justice.

Grandma Qin gritted her teeth and brought up the matter of the wife she had found for Qin Yi before to Su Wan.

She'll find out eventually anyway, so I might as well tell her myself since I can't hide it from her.

Anyway, nothing happened between Qin Yi and that girl; they weren't even alone in a room together.

...

"Wanwan, you've suffered."
