Chapter 55 Apocalyptic Zombies Turn to Good (Part 4)

The weather was gloomy, and a cold wind howled. Yang Hui, her large feet sprinting with all her might, rubbed against the ground at lightning speed. She ran like the wind, her brows beaded with sweat, her anxious eyes revealing worry and concern.

The burly man chasing Yang Hui seemed to be carrying a heavy iron ball, relentlessly pulling her back, preventing a group of grown men from catching up with a woman despite their best efforts. His breathing was steady, his legs were so tired he could barely move, and despite his composed demeanor, he occasionally glanced around – it seemed he needed to add another iron ball.

"Is this the difference between a movie queen and an extra?" Ji Xiaoxiao exhaled a breath of hot air, rubbing her hands together to drive away the cold.

Covering a distance of about a hundred meters, Yang Hui covered the distance in an instant, rushing forward to tightly grasp Ji Xiaoxiao's hands. She simply and concisely told her that Lan Yihui had offended the underworld boss of Hope Base while saving her. Lan Yihui and Lan Qinying had been captured by the underworld boss, their fates unknown, and Yang Hui had barely escaped with all her might. Yang Hui came not for any other reason than to inform Ji Xiaoxiao, not expecting Ji Xiaoxiao to risk her life for them, but only hoping that Ji Xiaoxiao would not be innocently implicated because of them.

What a wonderful person!

Before Ji Xiaoxiao could express her feelings and thoughts at that moment, the burly men, as slow as old oxen and broken carts, slowly arrived, glared fiercely at Ji Xiaoxiao, and then dragged Yang Hui by the hair and sped away.

"Xiaoxiao, your parents may not be able to be with you anymore. You have to live well on your own," Yang Hui said, her voice choked with emotion.

Things were moving too fast, and Ji Xiaoxiao was stunned, her mind unable to process what was happening. She waved her hand blankly, muttering, "Bye-bye, come back soon."

Ji Xiaoxiao wasn't sure if Yang Hui had heard her sincere blessings and wishes. Looking at Yang Hui's huge mouth that could swallow an egg and her astonished face, Ji Xiaoxiao was instantly replaced by relief and sadness. It should... maybe... go in one ear and out the other!

With an indifferent smile, Ji Xiaoxiao disregarded Lan Yihui and Yang Hui's clever plan. She wouldn't retaliate against the Lan family, nor would she demand they pay the price. But for Ji Xiaoxiao to willingly fall into the trap, she'd better go back to bed and wash up!

They arrived amidst great fanfare, but left in a desolate state.

Ji Xiaoxiao looked up. The sky was overcast, and a thin white mist draped the heavens and earth like a veil, making visibility low and hazy. Dark clouds drifted closer, and lightning crisscrossed within them, the booming sounds gradually fading away amidst the mountains and rivers.

"It's going to rain." Today is clearly not an auspicious day to leave the city. Ji Xiaoxiao was a little dejected. Boredom can be deadly, you know.

The heavy rain lasted for three days and three nights, leaving the troops exhausted and without reinforcements. A light drizzle then followed in their place. Three more days passed before the rain finally stopped.

After suffering from hunger and cold for several days, Ji Xiaoxiao stepped out of the small house, stretched, took a few breaths of fresh air, and happily packed her things, preparing to leave the Hope Base. She didn't have much, and a little while later, Ji Xiaoxiao slung her small backpack over her shoulder and strode away.

Hopefully, the base, being only the size of a bullet, is insignificant compared to the fallen metropolis. Ji Xiaoxiao hadn't walked more than a few minutes when a wide, heavy iron gate appeared before her. In front of the gate, most of the humans were ragged and pale-faced, constantly sighing and their lifeless eyes devoid of luster.

At the tail end of the long, crowded queue, Ji Xiaoxiao felt a sharp pain in her heart upon seeing this scene. The pain was like being stabbed with a knife, like being torn apart by ants. A heavy sense of guilt surged over her like a raging storm, each wave higher, larger, and more ferocious than the last, determined to drown her.

Ji Xiaoxiao traveled through multiple worlds, encountering all sorts of mission targets. Each time, she was more or less affected by the lingering emotions of the original owner, experiencing splitting headaches, physical instability, and so on. Over time, Ji Xiaoxiao grew accustomed to it.

The original owner, Lan Xiaoxiao, was kind-hearted and couldn't bear to see people's lives hanging by a thread. She was constantly hungry and anxious. Alas, with such a strange original owner, Ji Xiaoxiao could only adopt an attitude of out of sight, out of mind, and obediently lined up, looking down at her feet, before leaving Hope Base.

Upon reaching the outskirts of the city, all that could be seen was devastation. Collapsed buildings, the stench of decay, blackened human bones, and in the distance, the faint outlines of blue-faced, fanged zombies staggering towards them. The noisy crowd around her, who had been heading towards their destinations, fell silent. Left all alone, Ji Xiaoxiao began to walk cautiously into the distance.

The warm sunshine turned scorching faster than turning the pages of a book. Without any means of transportation, Ji Xiaoxiao walked on her own two feet, sweating profusely as she went.

Looking back, Hope Base was nowhere to be seen. With the sun so intense, Ji Xiaoxiao had no choice but to bide her time and avoid the limelight. She found a shady spot by the roadside and sat down to rest.

Ji Xiaoxiao's small backpack didn't contain much: a small bottle of mineral water, half a pack of compressed biscuits, and a few other miscellaneous items like a dagger and clothing. She took a sip of water, ate a small bite of the compressed biscuits, and then carefully put the rest of the food into her backpack. She zipped it up and patted it with satisfaction.

The sun blazed fiercely, high in the sky. The once-kind sun grew increasingly unkind, its scorching rays threatening to bake the earth. The oppressive heat distorted space itself. A light veil swayed gently in the breeze.

Ji Xiaoxiao sat on the ground, enjoying the shade, but she dared not relax her vigilance for even a moment. Although she had never experienced the apocalypse, Ji Xiaoxiao knew its horror and cruelty, as well as the dangers lurking in the shadows at any time.

Clang, crack, a soda can rolls across the road.

Ji Xiaoxiao's attention was instantly drawn to the sound. Due to friction, the can rolled a few times and then stopped. After the sound disappeared, Ji Xiaoxiao focused her mind and calmed herself, using her senses to perceive the subtle fluctuations around her.
