Chapter 1 Rebirth

…………

In a small town on the outskirts of Beijing, in an ordinary house, Zuo Ling clutched her head in pain.

A man's voice came from beside my ear:

"Ling'er, Ling'er, what's wrong? Are you listening to me, Ling'er?"

Zuo Ling's face was deathly pale, and she was panting heavily, with sweat pouring down her forehead.

"Ling'er, this is better for both of us, please don't blame me..."

The man was still rambling on.

Zuo Ling suddenly opened her eyes, moved her hands and feet, and touched her head.

She wasn't in that secret room; the pain from the needles piercing her brain was still there.

A familiar face appeared before her, and she stared at him blankly.

Zheng Ming, her ex-husband, what's he doing here?

I looked around before I could see it clearly.

This is her and Zheng Ming's home.

"Ling'er, neither of us has any real skills, and our jobs are unstable. We're always working for others. When will we ever make a name for ourselves? It just so happens that she's taken a liking to me and is willing to give you some compensation..."

He stared at Zheng Ming's opening and closing mouth like a wandering ghost.

She was reborn! Reborn on August 25, 2030, the day Zheng Ming asked her for a divorce.

She and Zheng Ming were both migrant workers in Beijing and met through sharing a three-bedroom apartment.

Talking about love is too extravagant; the two of them are together simply to save on rent.

After living together for a year, they sold everything they owned, emptied their pockets, and borrowed some money to barely afford a down payment on a small two-bedroom apartment in Yanzhen.

Yanzhen is separated from Kyoto by only a river, yet it seems to be several classes apart.

Kyoto University is a hub for highly educated individuals and those who have studied abroad.

Both of them graduated from mediocre universities, majored in average fields, and lack connections and backgrounds. They rely on resumes to find jobs, so what good jobs can they expect to find?

They struggled and stumbled, barely managing to make ends meet, with little surplus food.

They have to pay a much higher price than people of the same age in the capital.

Take commuting to and from work as an example. Beijing is too big. It takes five or six hours to commute every day. If there is a car accident, or if it is windy, rainy, or haily, it will take seven or eight hours to get home. All the energy is spent on the road.

That's alright, but what's embarrassing for them is that after a year of hard work, they can't save up even a few taels of silver.

The joy of starting a family gradually fades, and even trivial matters can lead to heated arguments.

Passion is shattered by reality, leaving only the mundane realities of daily life.

The couple dated for a year, lived together for two years, and were married for three years, but dared not have children.

Unstable employment, no elderly parents to rely on, long commute to work, inability to save money... several mountains weigh heavily on one's shoulders, making it hard to breathe.

Zheng Ming's female boss thus interfered in their marriage.

In her past life, when Zheng Ming brought up divorce, Zuo Ling broke down and made a scene.

Driven by her pitiful pride, she refused any compensation other than the wedding house.

now……

"Okay, I agree to the divorce. I want 10 million, the house, and once the mortgage is paid off, it will be transferred to my name. You can take the car if you want."

Zheng Ming's rambling was interrupted, and he met Zuo Ling's indifferent eyes head-on. He opened his mouth, and Zuo Ling actually agreed!

Although there are some discrepancies.

The female boss promised 5 million yuan in compensation.

"I……"

Zheng Ming was prepared for the storm, but Zuo Ling's quick agreement left him speechless.

Suppressing her chaotic thoughts, Zuo Ling continued:

"Go talk to her. She's rich, isn't she? She wants the person, I want the money. We'll get a divorce whenever the money arrives."

Zuo Ling turned away wearily.

For Zheng Ming, it was just a blink of an eye, but for Zuo Ling, it was a full eight years.

Eight years later, her memories of Zheng Ming had become blurred.

With only six months left until the apocalypse, she had neither the energy nor the time to argue with Zheng Ming.

In the apocalypse, survival is far more important than marriage and love.
