"I never imagined that the once-renowned First Elder of the Ding family would fall into such a state of destitution. It's truly unexpected!"
The mysterious man opposite Liu Bao'er wore a black top hat with the brim pulled down so low it almost covered his eyes. He was wrapped in a long black trench coat with the collar turned up high, completely obscuring his face except for a small part of his chin and lips.
The figure standing against the light cast a small, heavy shadow, making the mysterious person appear even more elusive.
A gentle breeze lifted half of the mysterious man's clothes. He tilted his head and adjusted his top hat to prevent it from being blown off by the wind.
Liu Bao'er tried to peek at his face through the gap under the brim of his hat, but could only vaguely see a hazy outline.
"Hehe, likewise. This elder also did not expect that you had hidden yourself so well."
The mysterious man chuckled lightly: "I've come as agreed. No need for beating around the bush, just get to the point."
"Great! That's awesome!"
A sly glint flashed in Liu Bao'er's eyes as she cut to the chase:
"I want Pei Nansheng and his sister, but they are seriously injured and their strength is greatly reduced. I need your help to accomplish this. As for the reward, you can name your price."
The mysterious man took out a pack of cigarettes, pulled one out, and tapped it twice on the cigarette pack. "Elder, you make it sound so easy. Are Pei Nansheng and his sister so easy to deal with? If they were, they wouldn't have driven you to this state."
Liu Bao'er's expression changed. Damn it, trying to act tough with this elder. If I didn't still need your help, killing you would be a piece of cake.
The mysterious man chuckled: "What's wrong, Elder? You can't seem to contain your anger. It seems you've been put under considerable pressure by Pei Nansheng and his sister."
Suddenly, Liu Bao'er stopped being angry, her words turning sarcastic:
"The pot calling the kettle black. If you were truly as nonchalant as you appear, you wouldn't have come as promised. Why bother arguing like a woman?"
"..."
Liu Guojun cautiously observed his surroundings. The matter of the elder meeting with the mysterious man must not be leaked out, otherwise it would be disastrous.
Unbeknownst to him, two hilltops away, a pair of hawk-like eyes were watching them intently.
Ever since he became suspicious of Liu Guojun that day, Feng Wei had been keeping an eye on Liu Guojun's movements. When he learned that Liu Guojun had left the base behind Liu Bao'er's back, he immediately followed him.
For days, the faint smell of blood had lingered, and Feng Wei could tell it was the smell of human blood.
Liu Guojun and Liu Bao'er had no injuries, so where did the bloody smell come from?
Feng Wei especially remembered the look Liu Bao'er gave him; the look in a child's eyes sent shivers down his spine.
Looking back, it seems absurd and ridiculous.
Subconsciously, Feng Wei sensed danger and, fearing he might implicate his comrades, he told no one; he wanted to investigate on his own.
Today's trip was worthwhile; he did indeed gain something. To his surprise, the person he was talking to was none other than three-and-a-half-year-old Liu Bao'er!
Judging from Liu Guojun's attitude towards Liu Bao'er, it's hardly the way a nephew should treat his uncle. Liu Guojun's servility towards Liu Bao'er is more like that of Liu Bao'er's servant.
He originally thought Liu Bao'er was a tool used by Liu Guojun to cover up his true intentions, but the actual situation was completely unexpected.
Liu Bao'er... she can't possibly be an ordinary child!
Feng Wei immediately thought of the word "dwarf." Liu Bao'er was a dwarf in the guise of a child; otherwise, the situation before him would not make sense.
Even though they were separated by two mountains, Feng Wei still dared not let his guard down. He pressed his binoculars tightly against the ground and lay motionless on the ground.
Just as the mysterious man and Liu Bao'er had finalized all the terms, a dazzling light suddenly flashed across the distant mountaintop, and the mysterious man almost instinctively made a dodge maneuver.
Damn it! His identity is too special; it absolutely cannot be discovered.
Liu Bao'er looked toward the spot where the light was shining, while Liu Guojun ran toward Liu Bao'er, standing a little far away to avoid suspicion.
Oh no! Feng Wei tumbled down the slope repeatedly, his heart pounding.
The mysterious man left quickly without saying goodbye to Liu Bao'er.
Someone was waiting for him in the distance. After the mysterious man spoke a few words to the person waiting for him, the person ran towards the flashing light.
Before Liu Bao'er was injured, the distance between the two mountains was nothing more than a blink of an eye for him; now, he could only stare helplessly in that direction.
When the people who were supposed to meet them arrived, the mountain was deserted, all traces had been cleared, and only the howling mountain wind could be heard.
When Zuo Ling's family returned to the base, it was already evening. They wanted to go directly to Chief Mei to report the situation, but Chief Mei was too far away, and it would take 6 or 7 hours to go there and back.
The reclusive elder of the Ding family has been infiltrating the base for quite some time now, so there's no rush. We might as well go tomorrow.
Feng Wei took a long detour back to the base, arriving later than Zuo Ling and the others.
He first went to the duty room for a walk, and bumped into a young soldier walking out with a few pieces of paper in his hand. On a whim, he asked him a question:
"Xiao Liu, where are you going?"
Xiao Liu held up the papers in his hand, looking utterly dejected.
"The base office needs records of people entering and leaving the base today, so I made a copy and sent it to them."
The base office is far from here, and it takes 3 or 4 hours to go there and back. Xiao Liu was very annoyed. Why did they have to call us at this time of year? If they had called us half an hour later, it wouldn't have been his shift.
Feng Wei asked casually, "What happened? Have some bad guys sneaked in?"
This situation has occurred before, but today is special, so Feng Wei can't help but think more about it.
"Who knows? They're always on a whim, constantly causing trouble."
