Chapter Fifty-Two: Total Annihilation

Zhong Jue seemed to be stunned for a moment, then grabbed his collar and roared hoarsely, "I met Aying and the others when I came back, but we encountered a group of strange birds when we were almost at the Xiyu base... Aying, she and her squad were wiped out while covering us!"

"Cover you up?" Ji Yueyao's eyes widened. "She died and you all came back unharmed! You bunch of grown men actually needed her to risk her life to cover you up?!"

"We also lost several men!" Zhong Jue gritted his teeth, leaned against the wall, and stopped talking.

"What a joke, what a joke..." Ji Yueyao murmured with her head down. The joy of returning from the mission was completely gone, replaced only by endless sorrow.

Xue Bin looked at Zhong Jue's actions with a hint of mockery, then turned and left with his men.

But Ji Yueyao, who was looking up unintentionally, caught his mocking smile.

In the final mission summary, the first and second squads handed in a total of twelve supernatural meteorites and all members returned. The tenth squad handed in five supernatural meteorites and all members returned. The sixth squad was completely wiped out.

Ji Yueyao, having grown up in a peaceful world, didn't think much of Zhong Jue's explanation at first. However, after the summary meeting, she felt increasingly uneasy, and a conjecture that overturned all her thoughts flooded into her mind—Zhong Jue was the murderer, or at least he was definitely related to Qiao Ying's death.

"Yueyao, would you like some water?" Kaqi walked over from the side, looked at Ji Yueyao's expressionless face, and sighed softly.

"Thanks." Ji Yueyao smiled, but the smile beneath her pale face looked bitter no matter how you looked at it.

"Are you still thinking about Sister Qiao's death?" Kachi patted Ji Yueyao on the shoulder. "Even if you think Qiao Ying's death was suspicious and you have no evidence, there's nothing you can do. Besides... even if you had evidence, you couldn't go against the head of the search department. You know, there are no laws in this world that can restrain them; the only things that can restrain them are power or status. And you're just guessing right now; maybe the truth isn't what you think?"

"Okay." Ji Yueyao nodded, picked up her water glass, turned around, and went downstairs. "I'm going to the medical department."
